The hoop can be "easily" taken apart but that doesn't mean its loose. In fact, my instructions direct you to modify the connector so that you shave the sharp edges of one side which makes it easier to disassemble. But you dont have to shave off too much of the connector. you can leave it relatively thick, it will just be a bit of a pain to remove when you need to. The point is to allow you to pull the tube off the connector without the need to heat it with a blow dryer etc.
As for reliability, I made two demo hoops that I brought with me to Internet Week NY as part of Maker Faire. I modified the connector so that it was pretty loose. 50 or so people who were not experienced hoopers used it and abused it, dropping it and throwing it across the room. Nothing ever came apart.

You can read about that event here

The circuit I mentioned above is called a DC boost circuit. It takes in 1.5V and steps it up to 3.3V. You never need 6V to power an LED. Most bright LEDs range in voltages from 2.2V to 4V.
My instructions on my site only show the 3.6V lithium battery version which drives the LEDs directly.
My site doesn't cover the new DC Boost circuit with the AA battery that I mentioned here.

well, if you have any interest in making your own LED Hula Hoop I have a kit that you can build that will have 21 LEDs and is powered by one AA battery of any kind (alkaline or rechargeable). It will last about 3 hours, but when you need to change the battery all you do is untape the tube near the connector, pull apart the tube, swap the battery with a new one, reconnect and you are all set.
So theoretically you can bring like 6 AA batteries with you.. in your pocket even.. and you will get a total of 18 hours of lit time.

And since it can easily be opened to swap batteries that means it can also be coiled down to about 20-22 inch diameter (using tape to keep it small) when traveling.
Standard full size would be about 40".

You can see basic instructions for the DIY kit on my site.
http://prodmod.com/make/ledhulahoop
The one on my site is a non-rechargeable lithium.

But you would just need another circuit to put between your switch and LEDs to allow it to accept the AA battery which you stick in a battery holder. I dont even sell that circuit yet. But if you'd like to be the first to give it a try just let me know. I am looking for some real feedback anyway.

If you are totally not interested in making it yourself. I would consider making and selling it to you if you promise to give it an honest review.
