Hey folks, any tips on making your own hoop? I just learned how to hula (I can hula around my neck now!) and wanted to make my own. Thanks!

    there are great instructions here:
    www.jasonunbound.com/hoops.html

let me know if you fine 1" poly tubing. I've called all over and can't find any. Buying them is affordable enough until you get to the shipping costs. More than the hoop itself. oof.

      Here's the thing:

Hardware stores in the Bay Area have discontinued stocking the varying sizes of polyethylene tubing. Since it's cheaper than PVC, folks were buying it to use for plumbing projects not approved by local Building Departments. Then, of course, eventually these plumbing projects fail and ruin homes, probably insight lawsuits and make a general inconvenient mess for everyone who ends up being involved. So now, Bay Are hardware stores are carrying 1/2" poly hosing, which is not big nor strong enough to make into hoops.

Since poly tubing is for garden drainage and drip-systems, I suspect that hardware stores in the more rural and agricultural areas still carry the 3/4" and 1" poly tubing - like Sac or Fresno. Perhaps a call to some of those locations might be more, uh, fruitful (hee). Might be worth a trip to buy a bunch to have in stock and maybe sell-on to friends. I plan to do this myself when I move a place with more space (and, uh, get a job).

I'm pretty sure we still have buttloads of 3/4" from when we were making them. If anyone needs some, lemme know, and I can probably hoop you up. I live in Oakland.

heh, I mean to say "hook" you up... but 'hoop you up' enough works quite well too.

oh oh, I'd like to be hooked up. I live in Oakland too and would love to make another hoop. Any words of advice for figuring out the perfect diameter?

I have 2 hoops.. one is made with 11 ft and one is 12ft of tubing. I learned on the 12 footer, and recently downsized... it's easier for me to do tricks and stuff with the smaller hoop. The smaller the hoop, the faster the rotation.

              Hey Shari and Kyrsten,

You both live in Oakland? You should join BAH (Bay Area Hoopers)! We meet every Sunday from 2 to 6 and hoop it up. This Sunday we will be meeting somewhere on the Berkeley campus. If you're interested, let me know and I'll send you the exact details. If you'd like to be on the BAH mailing list, send an email to bah@yahoogroups.com. It would be great if you could join us sometime!

Also, we're still looking for an indoor hoop space for the winter. If you have any ideas, send them my way.

              Thanks,
              Vera

I realize this post is from 4 years ago...I live in Oakland and have had no luck finding 3/4" 160 psi tubing. Is there any chance you have any you'd be willing to sell?

I don't know if this helps, but have you tried a Farm Supply? I dunno if they have any farm supply stores in the East Bay, but that is where I found the tubing I needed after checking every hardware store where I live.

Try Lowe's in Livermore - they usually have it in stock.

The Urban Farmer had some in stock too, but it was way more expensive there.

Just as an update, I called the Livermore store today and they said they've been out of the tubing for a few weeks now. They couldn't tell me when they'd have it back in stock. Are there any other places in the Bay Area that carry PVC tubing?

I just went a few weeks ago and they had TONS of it, but it was all misplaced. The system said they had nine rolls (400') of the 3/4" 160psi in stock but none of them were on the shelves. What was on the shelves was all in the wrong places too. We looked at all the pallets in that aisle and the next one (where they store the extra) and couldn't find the right tubing. After almost 40 minutes, just as the store was closing and we were about to give up, the guy who was helping me found a pallet full of them in a completely different section of the store. I also bought some 3/4" 100psi which was on the shelf (but again in the wrong place).

The Lowe's in Vacaville and Cotati also carry the 3/4" 160psi tubing. If you prefer going to Livermore, you should be able to do a special order over the phone and then pick it up when it arrives. Good luck!

I just made some hoops this weekend. I'm in Seattle. The Home Depot up on Aurora has the tubing. I got 100 ft of 1 inch, 100 psi for $15.

I just used a small hacksaw to cut the tubing, then sandpapered smooth the ends. No need to buy a special cutting tool, unless you really want to!

I don't know the length I used, but the hoop is a little higher than my waist from the floor.

there's also the ghetto-style hoop you can make out of the smaller "Whammo" kids hoops. You get two of them and cut them apart. Measure the length of hoop you want, take 2 couplers and stck the 2 halves together. This makes for an incredibly light hoop that's only 1/2" in diameter. The trick is to tape the hell out of it for weight. Duct tape works well, as does cloth gaffers tape. You'll need to wrap the hoop 3 or so times to get some weight on before it's hoop-able without trouble or injury. After you've got the base layers on, you can put on the decorative tape. Voila! Instant hoop. They're kinda flexi to hoop with, but I rather enjoy it. I also have some poly hoops, which work fine also. My house is starting to get crowded w/ hoops. :)

    Good luck!

does anyone know where to get the little "plugs" that folks put in collapsible hoops that don't have elastic cord on the inside? you know, one side of the connector stays in, the other side is made to come apart and the plug holds the connector together? it's shaped almost like a scew, but it's plastic....

I think they sell those at Home Depot/ Lowes. They are used alot in automotive applications. To hold interior panels on and stuff like that. I think that is what you are looking for. I don't know what their called but look in the hardward bins with the automotive or "specialty" stuff, they have pictures on the bins.

I've made a lot of hoops- it's really simple. You need irrigation tubing (this is sometimes tricky to find- try gardning and farm equipment stores), tube connectors (also at gardening stores), and vinyl artist tape. Tubing should be 1/2" - 3/4" wide- depending on how thick you like your hoop- and 160 psi. When you have all the supplies: cut the tubing to your desired hoop size, stick one end in boiling water to make the tubing slightly soft and insert the connector. Then repeat with the other end of tubing and connect to the other side of the connector to complete the circle. Let the hoop set until completely cooled and tape it to create traction, and cool designs. Did that help?

I'm a newbie so no expert on tape. But I can tell you that electrical tape comes in several colors and can be used for wrapping a hoop. You can find this at hardware stores or specialty lighting stores. Others can tell you more.

i found the electrical tape, no prob, but not as many "fun" colors as i hoped... i was tryin 2 purchase tape w/o having 2 go thru the internet... i wood like 2 try the gaffers tape, but i only saw that online as well....

Home Depot/ Lowes has colored electrical tape including red, yellow, blue, green, purple, orange, white, and brown usually sold in little plastic containers.(I thinks its called phase tape)
Wal-Mart has duct tape in similar colors including some fluorescent ones.
At some Sporting Goods stores you can find Athletic tape in colors like black, pink, purple, green, or blue. Athletic tape is a cloth tape that is similar to but a little lower quality than Gaffer's tape.
Someone (Xta?) said you can find holographic adhesive backed sheets at craft stores in the scrap booking section that you can cut into strips or make stickers out of to put on your hoop.
Fun ideas for a quick local hoop decorating.

identitape.com has some pretty sparkly tape..... and if you're ever buying gaffer's tape, make sure it's gaffer's tape and not paper tape (aka masking tape). it looks about the same but if you try to use masking tape you'll end up very frustrated. it rips, folds, and is a real pain.

does anyone have any tips on how to ensure the roundness- rather than the distinctly egg shaped-ness of a hoop?

well, i'm here in socal and the best place i have found 3/4" 160 psi poly tubing is at the local pool supply store. they have loads of it at .39 a ft. it's yellow tubing and is used for swimming pools, which may not be as popular in the north as down here. the apadters are .69 @ piece. The store here is called aquaflo. google pool supplies. you may have better luck.
and, the guys r so cool, they'll even cut to size!

Do you have the manufacturer name or part number (it's sometimes printed on the outside of the tubing)? I want to see if I can find it up in northern California too!

              this took some searching.
this is polyethelene flexible gas tubing. i had my prices mixed up. it's .69 a ft. and .39 for the coupling. still cheap.
aqua flo on line has a picture under gas products.
there are so many numbers..D2515 is one i think you want.
