top 10 songs to hoop to

This fall, as I approached my one-year "hoopiversary," I started thinking a lot about my own personal hooping style. I called upon the members of this tribe to give me advice about how to develop my own flow, and develop a hooping personality if you will. The advice in my previous thread was extremely helpful (hooping.tribe.net/thread/1e...ea82ebc6a) and has really resonated with me since I last posted. Immediately after I received such wonderful advice, I really felt like my own personality began to shine through when I hooped. Which got me thinking...

Music is such an important part of my life, and is undoubtedly the main reason that I have stuck with hooping. It is such a wonderful feeling to let loose while listening to my favorite music. I think the most helpful piece of advice I received on both my previous thread and from my teacher here in Boston was to listen to as many of your favorite songs as possible to find inspiration.

I don't know if this has been done before but I thought it would be really cool to hear what songs have inspired all of you on your personal hooping journey. I need some time to think about my "top 10" songs, but I will definitely be posting them soon. I can't wait to read everyone's "top 10" lists!

  • Hu-oh, your link didn't work. Links don't like parentheses very much.
    • I know it's been a long time since I first created this thread...I've been MIA on tribe recently. But I still wanted to share my top 10 songs with all of you. But before I do that, here's the link that didn't work previously:

      hooping.tribe.net/thread/1e...6ea82ebc6a

Now, for my top 10, in no particular order:

      1. Get Innocuous - LCD Soundsystem
      2. Senegal Fast Food - Amadou & Mariam
      3. Hearts on Fire - Cut Copy
      4. Voyager - Daft Punk
      5. As Serious As Your Life - Four Tet
      6. Feel Good Inc - Gorillaz
      7. Summer Romance - Incubus
      8. East To The West - Michael Franti
      9. Vuja De - The Orb
      10. Ghostwriter - RJD2
      11. So Easy - Royksopp

Ok so that's 11...close enough! It took me so much more time than it should have - there's just too much good music out there.

I'm so glad this post got so many responses. Thanks so much everyone, it was an pleasure to read your replies <3
  • "Music is such an important part of my life, and is undoubtedly the main reason that I have stuck with hooping."

Although I wouldn't have said music was such an important part of my life before I started hooping, I am now totally addicted to hooping to music and my exposure to different kinds of music and beats has developed 10-fold in the year and a half I've been a hooper. I can't really see hooping without music. It is definitely the reason that I've stuck with hooping. Not only can I do something physically challenging and enjoy it, I can also do it to music and enjoy it even more.

I am struggling at the moment to understand how to get this message of the wonderful combination, across to others. None of the people that I've taught to hoop seem to connect with the music at all. Content to stand and waist hoop, they are destined to get bored of hooping really quickly and their hoops gather dust in the corners. I suspect that this time next year none of my "hoopers" will do any hooping. Yet I find it so frustrating that they can't seem to see the potential to free up the inner dancer.

Anyway, that's not what your post is about, sorry. But your choice of words really struck home to me. As for a top 10 of favorite tunes, I'm a bit of a tune tart and move on pretty quickly. But these are the tunes I do return to, over and over. 12 though, not 10. I could go on. :~)

    1. Night Swimming - REM
    2. Champagne Supernova - Oasis
    3. Jhoom - Shankar Mahadevan
    4. Bittersweet Symphony - The Verve
    5. I Don't Feel Like Dancin' - Scissor Sisters
    6. Coming Around Again - Carly Simon
    7. In The Mood - Glen Miller
    8. Waterfront - Simple Minds (or any of their music actually!)
    9. The Gates of Istanbul - Loreena McKennitt
    10. Earth Song - Michael Jackson
    11. Apologize - One Republic
    12. Children - Robert Miles
  • Oooh a top ten... well, I'm not going to put them in order, but here are ten of my favorites:

    Underworld - "Cowgirl"
George Thorogood - "Ride on Josephine"
Taj Mahal - "Rock me to My Soul"

    11. ANYTHING by Incubus, Justice, Ratatat, Benny Benassi and Goldfrapp.

    • Goldfrapp <3 I went to see her in concert on the 10th November (which also happened to be my birthday), we were right at the front and she was amazing. And Justice are cool too, I'd probably put 'D.A.N.C.E.' in my top 10 hoop tunes as well!
      • String Cheese: Rivertrance
        Yonder Mountain String Band: Casuality
        • Ooh! I love hooping to Rivertrance! :)
          • Unsu...

The *bestest* Rivertrance version is the one with Sound Tribe Sector 9, got it from archive.org

My top 10 list of hoop tunes, in no particular order:

            Tuesday Again - Ooah
            Smile - Sasha

I like going back and forth between fast hooping and slow and trippy music, for that meditative state. Most of my taste in music is honed by the SF breaks and dub scene... I haven't listened to the radio in years for anything but NPR.
  • oo i love this thread! i like to hoop really fast, so slower music always just made my flow feel off. here are my top 10(ish)!

Magic Carpet Ride (remix) - Fatboy Slim
Send me on my way - Rusted Root

Around the World - Daft Punk
    Rock Lobster - B52's
    Spitfire - Prodigy

and my all time favorite song to hoop to... which is very odd because i dont listen to this type of music at all, this song for some reason just flows perfectly with my rythym:
Aint Nothin but a G Thang - Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg
    • Unfortunately my 30 gig video iPod was stolen earlier this year, so my 5,000+ songs went with it. I had a hooping playlist that had about 40 or so songs on it that I loved to hoop to. These are songs that I remember from the list, and they're in no particular order.

      top 10

1.) Eastern Sun & John Kelley - Rapture At Sea

      2.) Gnarles barkley - crazy

3.) Morgan Page Feat. Lissie - The Longest Road (Deadmau5 Remix)

      4.) Benny Benassi-Finger Food

      6.) The Killers - Andy, You're A Star

7.) The Killers - Mr Brightside (Jacques Lu Cont's Thin White Duke Mix)

8.) Gorillaz - Feel Good, Inc.

      9.) Lady Sovereign - 9 to 5

      10.) Lunascape - Lane Navachi

I love any techno song or anything with an awesome beat. I can't wait to check out all the tunes that everyone has posted.
    • I just started hooping so I don't have any favorites picked out, but when I saw "love rollercoaster" it made me download a bunch of songs by the Gap band, Ohio players, and Parliament....Ooooh WEEE I hooped to this stuff all morning! I forgot how much I loved old funk!
I also found some new (to me) stuff that I never considered before reading these, and some other lists, like Fatboy Slim, Girltalk and Michael Franti.
As hooping music goes, I Love this stuff!
      Thanks for the ideas, everybody!

    • LOVE, LOVE, LOVE girltalk!!! he just came out with a new one too! But Night Ripper R-O-C-K-S!!!!
      • oh my...you have to take a listen to Feed the Animals (especially Play Your Part Pt. 1 and Play Your Part Pt. 2). it is ridiculous. you can name your own price for the album on gt's myspace page. oh, and if you haven't yet, GO SEE HIM LIVE!!! it's an experience like no other:)

I am random and it totally depends on my mood. I have a cd from FaeryCon 2007 that I love to hoop to because it's slow. Then I switch it up and get into drumming or something like Azam Ali. When I just want to totally get lost in it all I throw on Michael Franti - especially Ona Move and just let it roll. Sometimes G. Love and Special Sauce too... I have some random stuff but it all works for me...:)
    • Sprye, you went to Faeriecon 2007 too?? I LOVE that cd! That's where I got that Lunascape song. I hoop to that album all the time, it's so amazing!
      • Unsu...

Yes I did and it was a great time and will go again sometime in the future I am sure. Isn't it such a beautiful cd!?! I bet we bumped into one another if you went to the Bad Faeries Ball...:)

What a wonderful topic!! It's going to be hard to choose only 10--I'm a music addict!--but I'll try my best:

    8. Intergalactic--Beastie Boys (Oh yes!)
    9. All songs by Langhorne Slim & the War Eagles
    10. Keller Williams!!

Okay, I cheated--a lot--and listed mostly just bands, and even a whole genre within in one :) Hooping without music is impossible to me--I've gotta feel that groove!

    • Oh, wow. I looked up this song and linked over to Kulturkantine Electronic Lounge Systems.

I'm going to need a bigger hard drive and a second job if this thread continues!
      • Umm, by this song, I mean the Les Djinns remix. Sheesh. Getting senile in my old age.

One of the songs I was hooping to recently was.
The Orb - Love Kittens. I don't know why, but it made me happy on a very stressful day.
Think I'll slip that one into my faves...
  • I also think that is why I got into hooping, because it gave me an excuse to dance to listen to my jams and move to it. It gets me in touch with the joy of the moment and a childlike care freeness~*
