I've recently started making hoops and I got bored with the tape selection in my area and moved on to ribbon. I really enjoy using it because it comes in so many colors and patterns. I have been using double-sided tape and then covering it with vinyl tape. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make ribbon hoops better?

Re: Ribbon Hoops
Tue, August 25, 2009 - 12:03 AMI've been playing around with this too! But I've been mixing it with other tape. So I'll use a little bit of double sided tape to secure it as I wrap the ribbon around the hoop, cover the ends with clear vinyl and then trim the ribbon with gaffer to hold it in place. :-)

Re: Ribbon Hoops
Sun, August 30, 2009 - 9:32 AMI don't bother putting anything on the back of the ribbon. I just overlap the tape (usually electrical) on either side of it to hold it down. I haven't tried the fancier tape to hold it down because it's not nearly as sticky. Gaffer and hockey tape will do well though. I love hockey tape, it's super sticky an very tactile.

I've been thinking about using different ribbons for a while now since there are soo many different option, but I wasn't sure if it would actually work or not... I guess I'll give it a try for my next hoop!

Re: Ribbon Hoops
Fri, September 18, 2009 - 12:03 AMI have been doing this for a while now too. I have found that glue sticks help keep the ribbon in place just enough so I can adjust the ribbon when I'm done to make sure it is spaced correctly. I then go over it with electrical or harness tape. I like the wired ribbon because it gives my hoops a nice texture. I would suggest using 3/4 inch tubing with 160 psi because the ribbon usually causes the hoop to much lighter than just tape.
My first ribbon hoop was beautiful! I wish I would have got a picture of it. It was brown and orange with crows on it. I recently sold it for an outrageous price to an art collector and wish I would have kept it for myself as planned.

Re: Ribbon Hoops
Fri, September 18, 2009 - 11:33 AMI recently re-taped a hoop with ribbon. I had a hoop that I had taken the gaffer and metallic tape off of. It had some sticky residue on it and it helped when I was laying down the ribbon. I then edged the ribbon with gaffer. I just made sure to have the hoop on some plastic so that it would not get other fibers and hair stuck to it. It turned out beautiful and I love to hoop with it. Ribbon is fun to explore!

Re: Ribbon Hoops
Mon, October 5, 2009 - 9:34 PMI use ribbon all the time!. I tent to take my hoops to festivals where they get wet and abused, so I paint the back of the ribbon with clear wood glue (or other non-soluble glue). it gives me a few minutes to make sure it is in the right spot before it dries, but when it dries, it becomes a solid mass of awesome.
