Baxter mentions hitting the face, which I've done. I wear sunglasses (even in the house) when hooping to avoid an eye injury. I grew tired of hurting myself, but am always full-on into sports and activities, thus resulting in a lot of bruising, broken bones and torn ligaments. I've grown tired of sitting on the sidelines "recovering", so am trying to take some precautions while still enjoying the sports I love (hooping, boarding etc).

I'm also getting the legwarmers Ariel mentioned as well, as I'm playing with hooping behind the knees. My bruised legs symphatize with your ankles Corbett! <g>

Peace,

I use wrist bands on my ankles when I practice ankle hooping. It takes more than one to cover the area, but I used to always hoop on the beach and I didn't want to wear leg warmers with a bikini :) Best of luck healing and getting back into it!

Thank you Thank you all for your advice...

I probably won't get to hoop much until Sunday but I plan to play with a few of these concepts. I really appreciate the variety of comments and support. All of a sudden this task of ankle hoopin doesn't seem so daunting. It is nice to have a few approaches to try and I'll let ya'll know if something clicks.

Hey Corbett,
(If any Hoop Pathers are reading this I'll also discuss this move tonight in class and, in "path speak" on our tribe.)

I guess there are a couple of things to consider here.
Before I get into the mechanics of the motion, you should consider the size and weight of your hoop. Of course, this move can be done (correctly) with any size and weight hoop, but the really heavy hoops can exact a heavy toll on the parts of the body with the least padding (back of hands, ankles, and sometimes unfortunately, faces.) If you hoop is weighted (water, sand, corn kernels, bb's, whatever) now may be the point in your path that you lighten your load. I suggest drilling a hole big enough to let that stuff fall out and a small piece of tape to cover it back up when you're finished shaking it all out. If you're ready to try moves like this, then you're probably ready for a lighter hoop.
Where you are getting bruised on your ankle and which ankle is the most bruised are important factors in determining where the rough spots are in your motion. If you are trying to put the hoop into a left (CC) rotation, and it is your right ankle that is getting beat up, then it means that you are more than likely striking the hoop to create its lift. A needed correction may be to begin the motion of the right leg while it is already resting against the hoop. My experience with students is that it is usually the left ankle that takes the most beating. That's because in a Left rotation it is the left ankle that is the lifting force for the hoop to climb up the core. My advice is to not think of this leg's action as a kick, but a lift. The left ankle (leg) lifts the hoop up and away from the right leg. When the hoop is on the left ankle, it should be carried away from the right, towards the body's left side. So the motion of the left foot is not a kick straight out in front of you, but a pendelum swing from right to left with a little bit of a push outward. The motion of the left leg is to place the carry the hoop up enough that it will travel from the left ankle to a place higher up the right leg (the back of the knee, or more ideally the back of the right thigh. In order to do this, remember to lift the hoop by raising your knee once the hoop is on your ankle.
We all know that speed and momentum are cure-alls for learning many moves. For many of us, when we first began doing this move, we put amazing energy into the hoop by swinging our right legs with enough force to put hoop into the outfield if we were playing kick ball. We send the hoop humming into to the left ankle with blind abandon. Hoop philosophy suggest that we use only as much force as necessary to perform a movement. So, one place to start may be to ease up a little on the initial push of whatever leg the hoop starts off around. that makes the job of the left leg a little harder, but also less perilous. As your timing with the left improves, and your motion becomes more efficient, the movement becomes more graceful. One more tip: if you're not already, practice this move on a hard, level floor. This move can be done on any surface, but gravel and grass are obstacles to be overcome once one has gotten the basic move down without bruising.)

There is disagreement on this issue among the Community, but I side with those who believe that Bruising is something we deal with mostly at the beginning of our Paths. I do think the body toughens up, but I think mostly, over time, our bodys just learn how to perform a motion without getting hurt. Actually, this for me is one of the great and gorgeous mysteries of Hooping. Our tribe down here wear bruises with pride. They (bruises) are symbols of new beginnings for us, and they are testaments to our courage in the face of the unknown. But, it sounds like you are just beaten up right now. I think it would be a good idea to take a few days off of that move. (My class would never believe I would say something like that, but if you're breaking the skin and hobbling around it seems appropriate to take some time away from that move and let your body heal itself.)

Disclaimer: There are as many variations of moves in Hooping as leaves on a Summer tree. I would never suggest that one way of doing a move is the only way of doing a move. not in this case anyway.

Owwie!! I feel your pain! If you're doing a kick-up with your ankle you're inevitably going to get bruises...

i have two torn ligaments in my left ankle that I have been abusing (hurt when i was 7) for the last 12 years and this trick is obviously not helping the healing process..

my method is to just suck it up lol.. (and i wear leg-warmers everyday regardless of hooping so i suppose those may help as well..?)

Legwarmers. You need legwarmers. All those hoopers who wear booty shorts and furry legwarmers aren't just trying to look hot (although sure: that too). Legwarmers around your ankles are important if you're focusing on ankle work.

Hey All-

I just figured out how to get the hoop off the ground with my feet/ankles but as I push the hoop around my ankle it has caused bruising. Not just bruising like we are all used to but major bruising. My ankle is very swollen and the skin has even broken in a few places where the hoop was hitting against bone. I am a dance teacher so I abuse my feet a fair amount but I feel like I even have bruising behind my achilles tendon. I don't mean to complain, I am thrilled to do this trick and continue to do it over and over again depsite the pain.

I am wondering if anyone here has some suggestions, or idea of what I am doing wrong. My hoop friends suggested I ask here as there have to be lots of you that can do this without such major problems. I use arnica for my normal bruising but my ankle is taking a beating right now. I hooped last night and tied up my ankle with bandanas. It helped lessen the pain as I did the trick but my ankle has not been happy all day. I can't keep dancing with this amount of swelling but I don't want to limit my fun with the hoop either!

Any help or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!
