Heh... thanks for saying 'cute' rather than 'comical' :) I have a good chuckle when I read my lil ole newbie posts.. and there were SO MANY of them! I got on the "write lots of posts" bandwagon pretty early in my hooping life :)

I wasw just about to say exactly what ken said before I read his post. Once you start walking around with the hoop at your knees you will find that it moves so naturally you don't even have to think about what movces your hips are doing. When it starts to fall you can just kick your knee up a bit almost bringing your knee to a 90degree angle as you step and it flies right back up. Just last night I finally got the one foot out thing that I saw on the mandala hoops video. I'm off to the park right now to practice the getting my other foot back in and the hoop back up part of that. By the way, what I have started using instead of electrical or vinyl tape is a combination of gaffer's tape and gauze tape that is meant to be used as a tennis raquet overgrip. I found it at sports authority for only 1.99$ per roll. The gaffer's tape can be found on identi-tape.com and is better than electrical, but that gauze tape is just shy of sticky. Not enough to stick TO things but tacky enough to grip your skin/clothing

Congratulations,

reguarding the short shorts; its easier to wear less clothing when ur starting out, once u get better u can wear anything from jeans to silky materials... i find it helps if you put gaffa tape around the middle of ur hoops.

Sounds like Xta is describing what I call the "shimmy" method of moving the hoop back up from the knees. I think the next step is to practice walking around while hooping at the knees. At first, it is a chore just to pick up one foot slightly and drop it back down, but eventually, you can walk pretty normally with the hoop around the knees.

Once you can do that, you will probably have already figured out the other method of raising the hoop -- by raising a leg at the right moment, you can raise the hoop without all that shimmying. It just sort of happens naturally when you are walking around with the hoop at the knees, and with practice you learn to control it. I find it much easier to raise the hoop that way from the knees.

LOL... on the day that I finally got the back-up-from-knees thing... I can remember standing in the field outside my pool, hooping it at my knees for about half an hour and just WILLING it to come back up... and trying to do variations on the shake/stick bum out/flick hips move.. and getting SO hot and frustrated, then getting SOOOOOOOO happy when it finally MOVED! Very exciting, at last...

Tips from me and my experience:

Start hooping at your waist.. notice your body doing the front-and-back rocking motion to keep it there.
Let the hoop move down to your hips, and do the front-and-back rocking there for a bit, then CHANGE your motion to a side-to-side flick/shimmy for the hoop to come back up to your waist.

Repeat a bunch of times.. if you have a mirror, or windows that you can get a reflection in, it helps to watch your hips.

Once you get this part, let the hoop go lower on your thighs, rocking front-and-back, and then change to the side-to-side again to bring it up. Repeat.

Now, from the knees... personally, I speed up a lot when the hoop is at my knees, but I've found it easier to get into the side-to-side flick if I slow my hooping down.. hard to get a full and complete flick at top speed. I also noticed, by watching my reflection, that when the hoop was at my knees, my attempted flicks would usually be stronger to one side than the other... but when I made the OTHER side flick equally hard, it was more effective at getting the hoop to move up.

Hoop getting stuck on your bum on the way up? This is where the "stick your bum out" can actually be translated as "lean slightly forward from the hips, so the curve of your ass is more inline with the back of your thighs" so the hoop can get around/over it.

Okay, and now for another way of explaining the "flick"... picture your waist and your hips both having horizontal lines across them.. while flicking, the line across your waist will stay mostly horizontal, while the line of your hips will angle up, around 45degreesish... the MandalaHoops video shows a woman bringing the hoop back up from her ankles, and if you watch her hips move, you can see this kind of motion. Quick, sharp, and EQUAL for both sides!

Hope that helps.. if you want anything worded in a different way, let me know :)

Wish I had video capabilities.. Ariel, you're still such a doll for doing those for us! Lessee.. my wish list of new show-and-tell tricks would include some of the hand-to-foot passing that people mention in the tricks section, and maybe some more step-hop-jump throughs? Heh.. any tricks that AREN"T on the hooping.org videos would be cool, too, as that's my main sorce of things-to-copy!

<grin>

Happy hooping!

by the way - be easy on yourselves. it took me nearly three months to figure out how to do this. a lot of hooping is the practice and getting comfortable with the hoop whereever it goes - not focusing so much on this trick or that trick - you're not going to get everything the first time you try it. and think about it - if it really were that easy, would you love it so much?

I TOTALLY had bruises when I was first starting to knee hoop... (its been about three weeks since I learned how to get it DOWN to my knees and keep it there, but I couldn't hoop it back up until yesterday)... black and blue and ouchy all over!

On my lunch break today I even got it back up once or twice without pulling my shorts up like a ninny :)

Also started trying some "use legs to pass hoop around body" moves that some other folk in the tricks section were describing.. but I don't think I get it. Anyone have better descriptions, or VIDEOS? <grin>

Thanks!

Wooo! Yesterday I FINALLY got the hoop back UP from my knees... the progressions "let it drop to hips, then bring it back up, drop to thighs, bring it back up" helped figure out what the move was, then whoever said to stick your ass out and wiggle like mad helped me do the move without feeling TOOO silly! :)

Can't do it consistently yet, and I'm finding that my baggy shorts don't allow it to happen, so I hike them up (kinda like picking up a skirt to step through a mud puddle..) ... feels silly, though :) Is this something that I will get around with more practice, or is it actually difficult to do with clothing other than booty shorts on?

Thanks, y'all!
