July 2008 Practice Goals

topic posted Thu, July 3, 2008 - 6:19 AM by  Herbee
This month I'm going to be working on vertical behind-the-back hooping, a bit of poi and mostly my flow and grace. I've never been very graceful, so this is my biggest challenge! LOL! I hope to have the confidence to post a video by summer's end, so that's a big goal too!

I can completely understand about the grace thing & I am also too nervous to post a video. I am fine till the camera is on, I kind of freak and mess up. It's kind of odd though, because I have no problem going to shows or parks and hooping.

My big July hoop goal is to get started on my Hoopnotica teaching certification (I'm only $100 away from the cost of supplies! I am going to do the distance learning program.).

As far as my practice goals, they are work to on my flow, work on the across the back roll (I think it's eagle roll, right?), learn the continuous step through, and start working with a smaller hoop.

    Wow, already!?! Happy July!
I managed to get the concept of chest hooping last month (it was one of my goals) so I would like to solidify that this month as well as variations such as shoulder hooping. I will also be working on angles and knee hooping.
Also, I am gonna try to dedicate more time to PRACTICING rather than making hoops! (Gosh, can we ever have enough? lol.)

Hoop making! OMG..I just got a box of tape in the mail yesterday! I have to agree with your "goal" of more hooping and less hoop making! LOL!

My goal for July is to spend time hooping in a more dancerly form, rather than just trick-trick-trick.... I had this feedback from a friend a year or two ago, when she saw me hooping to a waltz and said it was the first time she'd seen me actually dance. This past weekend at the Vancouver Jazz Festival when I was playing with my hoop and a particularly interesting song was being played, I noticed that she was watching me (leaning around other people standing in front of her so she could see) and that encouraged me to really turn on the DANCE, hitting the emphasized beats, working with the phrases within the music, and trying to match the music's flavour... and it was awesome!

Oh yeah, and I'm going to try to hold myself to only making ONE hoop for me, though I haven't decided yet if it will be a vinyl or a sparkle rainbow :)

        X.

This month is flow, flow, flow for me... engaging as much of my body as I can, moving within the hoop more fluidly and really working on just **letting go**. I want to work on my tosses, second current knee and leg hooping and rolling the hoop across my chest and back. I seem to get it across my back/shoulders, but across my chest...not so much. I keep hitting my face with the hoop (charming) or it doesn't make enough contact - just sails from one side of me to the other.

Oooh boy I have a lot I want to work on this month...

Number One for me is hand and arm movement. Between Caroleena's tutorial and the workshop I took this past weekend, I have a lot of material to work on... it's now a matter of remembering to do it and getting the feel for it in my body. Right now it feels awkward, forced and silly... I want it to become second nature.

Number Two is opposite direction leg and knee hooping. I'm still very unstable going to the left.

Number Three is to vary the music to which I am hooping.... I want to hoop to celtic and middle eastern music this month. I hooped to a celtic waltz on Thursday night and it felt so damn good!!

move-wise, i'm going to work on bringing the hoop back up to my waist from the knees. i have the bruises to prove i've already started. :)

non-move-wise, i'm going to spend some time hooping blindfolded, as i saw in the recent hoop convergence videos. i'm looking forward to REALLY feeling the hoop on my body and getting more connected to it.

Banshee - I love your practice goal. Please post a video when you get that down :)

As for me, I will focus on FLOW this month. At the HP Retreat, I was introduced to blind hooping (hooping with a blindfold on). I was shocked at how much it helped me to manipulate the hoop in new and different ways. I plan to add this technique to my practice more often and work on feeling my movements vs. seeing them.

Hi Herbee, (and everyone else) I just joined the tribe! I started hooping last May. I think I'm catching on pretty quick. My goal right now is vertical chest hooping. I think it looks really cool when you put your hand inside and give the hoop a little push.

This month is all about integration. I've actually put a moratorium on learning new moves and am focusing on folding in all the stuff I already know that I never/rarely do. A shift in flow is what I'm after...new patterns.
