Has anyone made one? Is there any trick to it, aside from making it real big?

My friend and I perform tandem all the time. Yes, the hoop has to be a bit bigger than usual, however, we started out with our first hoops, which were bigger than most of you use today. As the years go by, we work with smaller hoops, however, bigger hoops allow us to move more slowly and work it a bit more. We actually have a burlesque--tongue in cheek--strip routine that send the crowd into a frenzy. The key seems to be finding someone you are very comfortable with--your bodies must be very close--and playing around with what you've got. Start with a bigger hoop and work your way smaller if you feel you must. Tandem hooping is not only fun, it's always a crowd pleaser. Write to me off line at burningfairy@hotmail.com if you have more questions.

Are you very similar in build and size? Do you think tandem hooping would work with people that have quite a height difference?

Although it is more difficult, I have seen two people with quite a height difference successfully perform in tandem hoop. Adjustments are possible via footwear (tall person/flats; shorter person/heels or platforms) or body positioning. My hooping partner, Holly, is very good at adjusting her posture/movements to hoop in tandem with people who are both a lot taller and a lot shorter than she is. Me, not so good at it.

Some tricks are actually easier to do when one person is much taller than the other. For example, it becomes much easier for one hooper/taller to lasso the hoop around the other/shorter hooper. Also, it is a lot easier for a shorter person to drop in and out of a fire hoop around the waist or arms of a taller person.

In sum, you can do it if you really want to! My suggestion is start back to back and bend your knees to adjust for the height difference. Once you get the hang of it, you will probably find yourself more at ease standing up straight. However, be sure to watch out for the shorter person's chin once you get there :)

Any tips in particular on how to begin trying to tandem hoop? Is just plain waist hooping a good start or is there another tactic entirely that should be taken?

Hi Asia! Yes, the partner hoop(or tandem) is so much fun!! It is a bit tricky to get at first and it is a tad harder if you are of different heights(at least for core hooping), but still possible! Whichever position you start out(back to back, front to front or spooning) be sure you keep your bodies glued together from hip to shoulder. If you are really having a hard time than you can "cheat" by tying yourselves together from hip to chest(looks funny too.. hee hee). Be sure that you are not moving in a circle or making your collective motions too big, just like regular hooping, you have to get into a rhythm and less is more. One of the major tricks to partner hooping is to get used to only feeling the hoop on one side of your body. What tends to happen is the body kind of "panics" and moves more to that side(which is your partners side), throwing the rhythm and balance all out of wack. Practice pushing to your side when you feel it then following your partner to their side as they are pushing. You are both alternately leading then following. Great lesson on cooperation, huh?!

good luck and post some videos! We can all help more if we see what you are doing!

Well, the other person I'm trying to get into a hoop with is my boyfriend. He looked somewhat interested so hopefully I'll get to make some videos. :) Thanks for the responses.

I tried to make a tandem hoop a few weeks ago but I ended up cutting it down and making two kids' hoops instead. Reason being, the 3/4" 160 psi that I typically use for regular hoops was a bit flimsy when I made it extra large. I ran into a friend who is a long-time hooper. She told me that she's had the most success making a tandem hoop out of 1 inch, 100 psi tubing. And while I typically do not put water in my hoops, she said the tandem hoop works better with just a little bit of water inside. Said it helps to keep the momentum going and get used to the feel of hooping with a partner. I haven't tried it yet, but I plan to make one soon. If anyone has specific feedback on this and the recommended diameter of a tandem hoop, that would be great.

Waist hooping seems to be the best place to start; after all that's where we all began... Once you get it going, the difficultly becomes-what do I do with my arms? With waist hooping, you can keep your arms up and out of the way. Just glue yourselves together and move to the music. Once you move beyond that, you have to start watching out for other body parts, noses in particular seem to get in the way. The beautiful thing about tandem hooping is the connection. Just try it. Laugh, watch out for your nose. Expect a few bruises and enjoy!
