Do you measure the size of a hoop from the inside or outside edge? What size hoops do you guys use?

Outside edges, is where I measure mine.

Mine range from 34" to 45-46", lighter or heavier tubing. Many people use smaller and lighter hoops as they get more experienced and swear by it, but I found that after a few months of trying to "force it" on myself, I don't enjoy the small, lighter hoops so much. I prefer the rythme of my 43" PSI 160 hoop. It has a nice weight to it that makes "corkscrews" and all lifts appear to be liquidy smooth... I find the planes are more even as well, and the movements more sensual. It's really a personal preference, though! Bigger hoops simply fit more with my own way of dancing :-)

Beginner hoops are usually either 40" or 42"
The smallest I've heard of using is 36"
The smaller the hoop, the harder and faster it is when you use it.

I'm with Martine. I think 45-46 inches is best for most beginners. I know that's what I started with and I'm glad. 42-inches was way too fast for me when I first took up hooping. The rotation of the 45-46 inch hoops (measured standing on end, outside to outside) is slower and gives you more time to learn new moves. I have never seen anyone who can't hoop with a larger hoop but I've seen lots of folks give up with the smaller ones. When I teach, I always start folks out with a big hoop. Plus, I just love grooving with them. I have a lot of different size hoops. My favorite now is 39 inches but that may be because I'm hooping indoors so much. I still love my big hoops though, especially for outdoor festival hooping. Plus the flow looks so pretty with them. They are definitely my favorite hoops to watch when someone else is hooping.

The trick, though, is to fit a hoop to YOU! Most folks will want a hoop that, when stood on its side, stands somewhere between the belly button and the nipples. The larger around the hooper is, the larger the inside of the hoop needs to be. Height matters too. If you're very tall, you're proabably going to want a bigger hoop just because it will give you more time to do lifts and step-outs and what not.

In the end, I think it's best to err on the side of caution. If you make or buy a large hoop, you can always cut it down and make it smaller if you want a smaller one later. It doesn't work the other way around though...

I started off with a 45-46 inch hoop. I still use a 45-46 for stall and slow hooping practice.

For everyday hoopin', I use a 42-43 inch hoop.

I'm starting to hoop with a 38-40 inch hoop. I like a smaller lighter hoop....but it's taking time to get use to it.

I started on a 42" hoop, measured from the outside edges.
Right now I'm working with a 39" one, and I'm having fun with it since it moves so much faster.

thanks everyone. Hooping is much more versatile then I ever imagined when I first picked up the non-wham-o kind a couple of years ago. And I love that I can make my own hoops which means I can have all the different sizes and weights that I want without spending tons of money. If that's not good enough, there is so much inspiration out there so I'm never without a new move or sequence I want to try. AND, I find I move very differently depending on what type of music I'm listening to so there's even more variety! Hooping is the shit!! We need to get it to the masses, people! A genuine cheep thrill that is always interesting. How fabulous would it be to have hooping P.E. classes in every elementary school in the country. I wonder what kind of effect that would have.

One other thing to take into consideration is which tubing you use. When I started hooping, I bought a hoop online without knowing much about size or tubing. It turned out to be a 1" tubing that hurt like hell. Luckily I took a class a few days later and I discovered the joy of 3/4" 160psi. I started with a 42" hoop with that tubing. I ordered some 3/4" 100psi tubing online and there were some tricks that were harder to do with that lighter hoop (same diameter). I added some gaffer tape, which helped, but that is when I started my Division of Hoops. I used the 160psi hoop for certain things and the 100psi hoop for other things.

I tried making smaller hoops with the 160psi tubing, but it didn't feel right. Using the 100psi hoop for smaller diameters felt much better to my body. I recently started hooping with 1/2" tubing too. The hoops I've been using the most lately are both 36" diameter (one pair in 3/4" 100psi and the other in 1/2" tubing), but I still use my larger hoops and heavier hoops.

Having a variety of sizes and weights is really great. It really pushes me when I'm feeling meh about something. Once I learn how to do a trick and I feel fairly competent at it, I try it with a completely different hoop. Adapting to the different rhythm of each hoop is a good exercise for your body and brain!

My husband once said to me... "How many hoops do you need???".. I told him.. "As many as I want." I now have the most variety of hoops ever! Like Ani (Difranco) says.. "Ya gotta have the right tool - for every job.."
          Peace. you . sweet. spinners.

I totally agree with you, we should have more dexterity play in school and less of the "penetrate the enemy territory and force your way to the goal - type domination sports" in school.

That's why I'm starting my new website to make people more aware of the immense variety of sports and play activities that don't involve dominating an opponent.

I am completely with you Nicole. That's what I'm thinking too. I've only been hooping for 6 weeks, but I want to see hoops all over my country, and yes into the schools. I feel it's the best contribution I can make on this planet (apart from my singing). I seriously think it can deeply affect world peace. How can thoughts of animosity survive inside a hoop?

The first place I intend to teach is at my son's school. He attends a Sudbury type school, and they are all looking forward to learning out on the grass when the sun comes out, children and teachers alike.

        I mainly use a 40" (101 cm) hoop.

Hopefully I measured them right! :D

I have a 40 and a 44 inch hoop. The larger hoop is made with lighter psi tubing. The smaller hoop I have is from Hoopgirl. Does anyone know what psi tubing they use for their hoops?
