My hoop is a Bodyhoops hoop and it is made of yellow gas tubing. It is the only hoop I have at this point and I have not yet used a hoop made from the irrigation tubing. I am curious if there is a big difference between the two? Is one better than the other for making hoops?
If you are a hoop maker, which do you prefer and why?
TIA!

Re: Difference between the irrigation tubing and yellow gas tubing?
Tue, October 13, 2009 - 3:50 PMI use the yellow gas tubing, mainly because it is more convenient. I searched all the hardware stores in my area for the other tubing, and none of them carried it. Aqua-flow is about 1 mile from my house and they give me a really good deal if I buy 500ft rolls.
The main difference I have noticed is that the gas tubing is quite a bit heavier. Also, the black tubing is supposed to be cheaper by the foot. At least that is what a friend of mine who switched from the gas to the irrigation tubing told me.

Tue, October 13, 2009 - 7:21 PM100ft roll of 160 psi, 3/4" irrigation tubing is $35-45 depending on where you buy it. -

Re: Difference between the irrigation tubing and yellow gas tubing?
Thu, October 29, 2009 - 10:57 AMI am a hoopmaker in arizona and I am able to buy 100ft. rolls of 160psi for $27 and 100ft. rolls of 100psi for $25 through Ace True Value. I have never tried the yellow tubing, but I use the white HDPE for fire and LED hoops. It is stiffer but a bit lighter (but very expensive).

Re: Difference between the irrigation tubing and yellow gas tubing?
Tue, October 13, 2009 - 7:32 PMthe yellow tubing is about 200 psi. 3/4" of the black tubing. I have some women who love it and others that like the liighter stuff. I figured out how Bodyhoops makes their collapsible hoop and think the yellow may be sturdier for how they do it. -

Wed, October 14, 2009 - 6:58 AMThanks. I think it may also be more rigid, too. My hoop is pretty stiff.

Re: Difference between the irrigation tubing and yellow gas tubing?
Wed, October 14, 2009 - 8:21 AMgas tubing is heavier (more dense), stiffer, and holds its form better. however, it is also more expensive than irrigation tubing--and the biggest problem with gas tubing is the lack of good connectors for it.
with black irrig. tubing, you can use an "insert fitting connector", which is very convenient b/c you simply heat the ends of the tubing with a blowdryer and, Voila!, you insert the coupling for an easy and durable connection.
gastubing, however, usually involved metal inner fittings ($$$$$) which do not seem to form as permanent of a join. and you cannot use the other (irrig.) connectors with gas tubing b/c of differences in the INNER diameter of the tubings.
my verdict: tho i love the heavyness of gas tubing, irri. tubing is more cheap, convenient, durable, and versatile. gas tubing hoops that i have made have given some problems (with connections) in the long run.
if you are serious about making gas tube hoops, find a person who works with and connects that tubing as part of his/her job, and pick that person's brain for solutions to the connector problem. if you get any good advice, be sure and report back to us! :) -

Re: Difference between the irrigation tubing and yellow gas tubing?
Wed, October 14, 2009 - 11:12 AMThe connectors I use for the gas tubing work great. They are grey plastic and cost 99 cents each. I took apart a hoop made out of the black tubing, and the connectors were similar. I never heard of using metal connectors with the gas tubing. ???
The gas tubing definitely is more expensive, but the more you buy, the cheaper it gets. -

Re: Difference between the irrigation tubing and yellow gas tubing?
Tue, October 20, 2009 - 10:19 AMSueness (or anyone else) -- where did you get the plastic connectors for the gas tubing and what is the brand name and size? Someone gave me a huge coil of yellow gas tubing. My husband has been turning wooden connectors for it, and I would prefer not to waste his talents. (He's also been turning wooden connectors for PEX tubing.) I tried to find wooden dowels that fit, but standard size dowels are too big or too small. Would love to find the plastic connectors that fit. -

Re: Difference between the irrigation tubing and yellow gas tubing?
Wed, October 14, 2009 - 8:54 PMWhen I got my hoop I had bought I very large hoop. It was 45" and it was way too large for me. My husband cut it open so we could see how it was put together and we cut it down to a more manageable size. The "connector" was simply something that looked like a piece grey pipe whose outside diameter was the same exact size as the inner diameter of the gas tubing. It was a pretty rough cut piece of material and I don't think it was any special connector designed for the tubing, I think it is just a piece of another tubing cut down. It had a couple of small staples through the gas tubing into the connector to keep it together. I didn't bother stapling or nailing it back together because it seems to be a really tight fit (we had to use a heat gun to soften the gas pipe to get the connector back in).
My question is where can you get that sort of gas tubing? I have a feeling it is regional because here in Illinois we don't use tubing like that for anything. Gas lines here are either black pipe or Nomex or something like that. -

Re: Difference between the irrigation tubing and yellow gas tubing?
Thu, October 15, 2009 - 6:15 AMi think you can also fudge connectors for uncommon middle diameters, like make your own insert connector out of a piece of a dowel that fits snug. i've never used yellow gas tubing tho -
