i think i made up a new move since I havent seen any videos of anyone else doing it. I start by hooping vertically around my waist as close to my hips as possible, then i put my right foot through the hoop, I grab the hoop with my left hand as quickly as possible whiles stepping through with my left leg. its quite nice.
im not good at naming, but I think(def not sure) i call it the "walk through", but maybe someone else has already named it i just dont know about it yet.

Re: new move
Mon, December 26, 2005 - 11:01 AMHard to say without seeing a video of you, but it sounds like a move I saw another Vancouverite doing at one of our play sessions :)
Check the Burning Man 2004 video at hooping.org, too, they've got a bunch of folk doing waay different moves and step-throughs/walk-overs/hop-arounds.
Figuring out new moves is fun, eh? I like challenging myself that way, too... and then sometimes get bummed when I meet someone else doing the same thing, but then we usually have a couple unique things to show each other :)
Any chance you can video it, and get it into our future "name that move" discussion?

Re: new move
Mon, December 26, 2005 - 11:01 AMI love new moves! I'm having a hard time visualizing it, though. Are YOU vertical and the hoop is going around your waist? or is the HOOP vertical going around your hand?
There are step-thru moves in both situations, but I'm excited to learn a new one! -

Re: new move
Mon, December 26, 2005 - 3:00 PMthe hoop is vertical and im bent over, my top half parallel with the floor.
ill try posting a short video from my camera, havent tried it yet.
I saw your video taken outside. that was the first time ive ever seen anyone hoop around their elbows quite amazing!

Re: new move
Mon, December 26, 2005 - 3:02 PMyes, please elaborate...I've always thought of vertical hooping to be when the hoop is in your hand(s), and IT is going vertically. Almost sounds like you are talking about angle hooping. I'm dying to try this neat sounding trick! -

Re: new move
Mon, December 26, 2005 - 3:58 PMokay vertical hooping is when its in your hand, i thought it was when hooping vertically or in hand.... i made a video on my camera, its in MOV format, and its 6387 KB, how can i post it -

Re: new move
Mon, December 26, 2005 - 4:30 PMBetsyRose, there's no way to post videos to tribe.net. Maybe someone with server and bandwidth space to spare has room to host it? Or you could try Google Video (Beta): upload.video.google.com/

Mon, December 26, 2005 - 5:00 PMmeeooww!!!!!
i've tried this!!! its like a step through, but not holding the hoop, the first half is done by vertically hooping around your waist! fabulous!
name it! way to be creative, hooping is all about doing what you see and making it your own or playing around until you've got something new and fun! -

Re: new move
Tue, December 27, 2005 - 1:18 AMOh ho, I'm getting a better picture...
Okay, so, bent over at the waist... looking at the ground? leaning back looking at the sky? somewhere in between?
Which way is the hoop spinning, if you step through with your right leg first? Clockwise? CCW?
Heh, we really need to develop vocab! Game on!

Re: new move
Tue, December 27, 2005 - 10:44 AMoooh, got it! I'm gonna try as soon as these people leave my office (I donated a hoop to my hotel so it stays here all the time)

Re: new move
Tue, December 27, 2005 - 1:54 PMbent over facing the ground. i spin the hoop counter clockwise, its the most natural for me, so if you spin clockwise everything would be reversed.
im still working on trying to get the video posted

Re: new move
Tue, December 27, 2005 - 2:14 PMowww! step thru at the wrong time and the hoop kicks up to box your ears. I'll keep on it though. once or twice I stepped through right but just didn't grab it fast enough -

Re: new move
Thu, December 29, 2005 - 10:41 AM"wasted"? <grin> Made me think of a move invented while drunk.
Do we need to specify that it is a "forward" waisted step-through, since some of us may be able to figure out how to do a step-through from the face-the-ceiling position? (I'll be working on my core strength for a while before I attempt THAT one!) ... any yoga names for forward and backward bends that might be applicable?
I think I may be giving up on trying to post my video clips on my website, and go to a free host like the one you used... this is so educational in so many ways!

Re: new move
Thu, December 29, 2005 - 10:59 AMIf we used yoga names, then this would be a downward waisted step-through.
-
Re: new move
Thu, December 29, 2005 - 11:30 AMyeah, it was really easy to set up the site and its free, cant beat that.
btw, i havent ever physically met any of you totally awesome people, but i can honestly say i love you.... BIG HEART!!<3<3<3 hurray for hula hoops! and tribe!
so its the "downward waisted step-through" me likey
That would be amazing if you could do the upward waisted step-through! i cant even contemplate that at this point.

Re: new move
Fri, December 30, 2005 - 11:07 AMI started playing with this yesterday, both downward and upward... and I think my jeans were too tight! <grin> Just couldn't get my right leg up high enough, fast enough, to step through before the hoop crashed.. managed it in slow-mo a couple times, though :) And, upward-facing shows promise, actually.. y'all should try it, too!

Re: new move
Fri, December 30, 2005 - 11:28 AMWow! cool move! I do a similar one from my neck. Same body position and step through just on your neck instead of the waist. Also, I do a transition from this step through (from the neck) straight to traveler( what you call "the blackhole" in one of the other videos). Does that translate? I love all the different variations and possibilities in hooping moves! I always wonder if other types of spinning arts have the same flexibility as hooping?
