What's your fav music to hoop to?

topic posted Thu, June 16, 2005 - 8:09 PM by
That message about drumming reminded me, that I wanted to ask y'all this!

What music do you put on to hoop to.. which is your absolute most favorite song/artist/album? Who makes you smile even more than a hoop alone?

For me: Basement Jaxx "Do Your Thing" - a bouncy, jazzy, funky explosion of Joy :)

and for You?

X.

great question! I love breaks, tribal progressive and tech house as long as it is quality I love it.. I even dig some good psy-trance once in a while.. My newest favorite song to hoop to is on Becks new album "guerro" I think it is track 7... very funky and fun!

    hoopn' n smiln'

i see we have a pretty good split here between DJ junkies and jamband fans....

since most of my hooping buddies around here in SF are breaks fans, we end up hooping to that a lot and of course i dig it. i also like really, really fast electronica like jungle and, as someone else said, indian/eastern tabla and asian electronica. disco funk is also a favorite and regular funk as well. sometimes that slower funk rhythm is a welcome change of hooping pace from the drumNbass/breaks vibe, and i can really get my ass into it. ;)

at home, when no one's looking, i also like to hoop to cheesey 80s dance music and remixes as sort of an 80s style aerobics workout.

Patric sums it up well for me:

      Hippie/Jam/improv/boogie/Mountain Festival Rock!

It was The String Cheese Incident that started it all for me. When my buddy, Garth, told me that there was a hula-hooping scene around SCI I "got it" straight away. Goofy fun and giggles, outside in the sunshine, to live music. I staight away vowed to become a hooper.

So my music for hooping starts with SCI.

Then the other "acoustic jambands" Railroad Earth, New Monsoon, Donna The Buffalo.

On the funky side: The Codetalkers; John McLeary and The Absolute Gentlemen; Trey Anastasio.

On the psycdedelic side: Sound Tribe Sector 9; Themasses.

Also, the soundtrack from "Emelie" .... so beautifull and flowing for hooping to.

Talking Heads would be great for sure (so where are my TH cds ???).

And I will end by saying that, for me, SCI's song "Round The Wheel" (often referred to as "waiting for the snow to fall" is the undisputed Hoopers' Anthem !!!!

..... but then, I'm a cheesehead .......... any comments re: hoopers anthem ?????

      Great thread y'all.Thanks!

      Brendan in Vancouver.

Tribal Drums, but not just any-I want to hear like 50 of them at a strong powerful drum circle! So far I've only been able to capture that live. I wish I could find some recordings of this type of drumming. I did things tonight at the Drum circle that I had no idea I knew how to do. would never be able to recapture some of those moves without multiple drums. Where do I find this sort of music for practice?

I vote Keller William's "Phreaker at the Speaker" to be a close second for an anthem.
But for me, "Round the Wheel" is tied with SCI's "Roll Over" for first!
Signal Path and 'livetrance' reminded me to throw out Galactic for long-haired ravers, and Hamsa Lila for a middle-eastern beat.
This is fun! Why would you think this would piss off musicians? Almost every band we've mentioned has their own tribe here!

              hey hoopstars!

i just happened on to this thread, and it's funny, i did a gig in cabo this past week-end and happened to choose basement jaxx's "do your thing" which xta mentioned at the beginning of this thread, for my fire hoop number. it's really fun to hoop to.
i love hooping to funky house, lots of drums, tablas, tribal (dj kramer has some great cd's) sometimes i can really get into hooping to esoteric, slow stuff (hable con ella from the soundtrack of the movie by the same name), theatrical sounding stuff. i can get into psy-trance occasionally, but most times it's too dark for me.
i'm from south africa and there's some great mbaquanga and kwaito to hoop to - they have what i call ass-flipping beats (if you've ever seen south african tribal dancers, you'll know what i'm talking about - ;} ). there's a south african band called brothers of peace and i love hooping to them. also tkzee, but they're a little more disco. for a more middle-eastern flavor, ekova's "soft breeze and tsunami breaks" has some great songs to hoop to.
when we were getting ready for the gig this past weekend, we put together the following list of possible songs to perform to (we were doing fans, fingers, poi and hoop, so not all songs were for hooping).
              Shiya Isceffe/Brothers Of Peace
              Touch The Sun/Original Soulboy
              Reach 4 Freedom (DF's Vocal Mix)/Marques Wyatt
              SFM/Basement Jaxx
              Do Your Thing/Basement Jaxx
              Firestarter/Prodigy
              Nectarios / Phoenix (Vigi & Nectarios Mix)/Hybrid
              phoenix/?
              Out Of Control/Chemical Brothers
              Emit/Collect (Rennie Pilgrem's Agatha Stomp)/Zero

SCI / Horning's '05 was my intro to the hoop. Have to do this I thought; soooooo beautiful and I'm fairly hyper-kinetic, so good match. So... DEFINITELY SCI. I've mostly been hooping to jam bands and electronica (psy-trance, breaks, tribal, world.) Specifically SCI, ALO, Tea Leaf Green, Lotus, Disco Biscuits, Midival Punditz, Boozoo Bajou, Reevu Rockers, Mafikizolo, Niyaz, Osiris Indriya, BassNectar, TICON, JAIA, and still exploring, which your picks will help fuel :-D

Wow! Thanks for bumping this thread! I have much research to do now:)
I'm surprised to see no mention of OzoMatli yet. They have some grand hoopin' songs IMHO:) Their street signs album is my current favorite choice, I think.
    Off to study up,

such a great mix of fast and slow, tribal and funky, electronic and real instrumentation. Tales of the Inexpressible is one of my top 5 favorite albums.

Definatley String Cheese and StS9, but a couple of new ones I'm trying (and holy crap I got worked!) was Nero and Lotus... super energetic and clean, like Blue Quarter ot Particle without the sketchiness.

This is a great topic! :)
I am a fan of hooping to many styles of music - particularly live-tronica, funky jam-bands and funky or tribal house music.
I have seen so many wonderful bands listed here and need to run outside and try hooping to some of them!
Shpongle should be fun, as recomended by ultaviolet, but I'm gonna try "Are You Shpongled?" since that's my favorite album by them.
I would also highly recommend hooping to:
Tabla Beat Science - Live at Stern Grove
        Material - Hallucination Engine
        Dr. Didg - Serotonality
        St. Germain - Tourist
The Motet - Music For Life
        DJ Logic - The Anomaly
        Tuatara
        The New Mastersounds
        Lettuce
        Mark Farina
        Derrick Carter
        Doc Martin
        Miguel Migs
and probably my favorite - STS9 - Artifact

        Keep on hooping! :)

Oh my god! I just bought 3 songs from Tales of the Inexpressible off iTunes. My boyfriend and I are LOVING these guys! I looked, and sure enough, they're going to be playing at Shambhala this summer. Can't wait! Thanks for the great tip.

If you do this, you'll thank me later. Find a recording of New Monsoon performing "Traveling Gypsies" (There's a really good one on archive.org from Dec 31, 2005 at The Bank in St. Petersburg--it's track 3)
have as many lighters as you have wicks so you can light up your whole fire hoop at once, and fire hoop to this song. It's perfect.

    Great question, but HARD QUESTION!!

    To guarantee myself hooping bliss:
    Tribal Trance
    Tribal House
    Deep UK House
    dnb, especially DieselBoy and Kosheen
World, esp. African and Brazilian Drumming
    and....drumroll please....
Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven...one night a few years ago inside this tiny bar in downtown LA, it was the last track of the night...and I fell into a huge pot of bliss with my hoop around me...I'm not sure I even touched the ground.

I started with SCI, too, in 1998 (thanks Ariana) under duress. I was just a shutterbug, but a demanding lil'gal made me embarass myself infront of the Mishawaka full of love puddle freaks.
The rework of jean Luc Ponty's Mauna Bowa was always a departure point for me. But 'Round the Wheel was written to that spin, I think.
SCI's San Jose is a fave when spinning to recorded music.
En Fuego? possibly. NM is fun to spin to.
So is Fareed Haque, oddly enough.
but a truly powerful experience is hooping to KanNal. (tribal jam rock with a hip hop edge)
Yonder can be fun, and I'll hoop to almost any live music.
BAssnectar could be fun... and to the folks looking for some of these, www.archive.org

          yay for disco :D

My favoritist to hoop too is asian massive breaks and dubby tribal stuff. Groups like Androcell, Kaya Project, Ishq, Karsh Kale, Medival Pundits. Drums are awesome to hoop to also! Pretty much anything people belly dance too so I can pretend I am a belly dancer hehe.

Also, psy trance, but with me I like doing anything to psy trance.

Can we refine this further? I'd like to hear some of these wonderful hooper's absolute favorite hooping song. It would be so cool to make a little cd that included songs like Basement Jaxx, Do your Thing and think, "Oh yeah! This is Xta's fav!"

(Should this request be another thread? I'm afraid people will not revisit it here but I don't want to pollute the thread either.)

I love Rusted Root and their song Ecstasy with the amazing drum solo that leads into it is one of my faves!
