That message about drumming reminded me, that I wanted to ask y'all this!
What music do you put on to hoop to.. which is your absolute most favorite song/artist/album? Who makes you smile even more than a hoop alone?
For me: Basement Jaxx "Do Your Thing" - a bouncy, jazzy, funky explosion of Joy :)
and for You?

Re: What's your fav music to hoop to?
Mon, June 20, 2005 - 12:26 PMi see we have a pretty good split here between DJ junkies and jamband fans....
since most of my hooping buddies around here in SF are breaks fans, we end up hooping to that a lot and of course i dig it. i also like really, really fast electronica like jungle and, as someone else said, indian/eastern tabla and asian electronica. disco funk is also a favorite and regular funk as well. sometimes that slower funk rhythm is a welcome change of hooping pace from the drumNbass/breaks vibe, and i can really get my ass into it. ;)
at home, when no one's looking, i also like to hoop to cheesey 80s dance music and remixes as sort of an 80s style aerobics workout. -
-
Re: What's your fav music to hoop to?
Sun, June 26, 2005 - 4:09 PMPatric sums it up well for me:
Hippie/Jam/improv/boogie/Mountain Festival Rock!
It was The String Cheese Incident that started it all for me. When my buddy, Garth, told me that there was a hula-hooping scene around SCI I "got it" straight away. Goofy fun and giggles, outside in the sunshine, to live music. I staight away vowed to become a hooper.
So my music for hooping starts with SCI.
Then the other "acoustic jambands" Railroad Earth, New Monsoon, Donna The Buffalo.
On the funky side: The Codetalkers; John McLeary and The Absolute Gentlemen; Trey Anastasio.
On the psycdedelic side: Sound Tribe Sector 9; Themasses.
Also, the soundtrack from "Emelie" .... so beautifull and flowing for hooping to.
Talking Heads would be great for sure (so where are my TH cds ???).
And I will end by saying that, for me, SCI's song "Round The Wheel" (often referred to as "waiting for the snow to fall" is the undisputed Hoopers' Anthem !!!!
..... but then, I'm a cheesehead .......... any comments re: hoopers anthem ?????
Great thread y'all.Thanks!

Re: What's your fav music to hoop to?
Mon, June 27, 2005 - 12:14 AMTribal Drums, but not just any-I want to hear like 50 of them at a strong powerful drum circle! So far I've only been able to capture that live. I wish I could find some recordings of this type of drumming. I did things tonight at the Drum circle that I had no idea I knew how to do. would never be able to recapture some of those moves without multiple drums. Where do I find this sort of music for practice? -
-
Re: What's your fav music to hoop to?
Thu, June 30, 2005 - 3:11 AMI vote Keller William's "Phreaker at the Speaker" to be a close second for an anthem.
But for me, "Round the Wheel" is tied with SCI's "Roll Over" for first!
Signal Path and 'livetrance' reminded me to throw out Galactic for long-haired ravers, and Hamsa Lila for a middle-eastern beat.
This is fun! Why would you think this would piss off musicians? Almost every band we've mentioned has their own tribe here! -
-
Re: What's your fav music to hoop to?
Thu, June 30, 2005 - 1:39 PMhey hoopstars!
i just happened on to this thread, and it's funny, i did a gig in cabo this past week-end and happened to choose basement jaxx's "do your thing" which xta mentioned at the beginning of this thread, for my fire hoop number. it's really fun to hoop to.
i love hooping to funky house, lots of drums, tablas, tribal (dj kramer has some great cd's) sometimes i can really get into hooping to esoteric, slow stuff (hable con ella from the soundtrack of the movie by the same name), theatrical sounding stuff. i can get into psy-trance occasionally, but most times it's too dark for me.
i'm from south africa and there's some great mbaquanga and kwaito to hoop to - they have what i call ass-flipping beats (if you've ever seen south african tribal dancers, you'll know what i'm talking about - ;} ). there's a south african band called brothers of peace and i love hooping to them. also tkzee, but they're a little more disco. for a more middle-eastern flavor, ekova's "soft breeze and tsunami breaks" has some great songs to hoop to.
when we were getting ready for the gig this past weekend, we put together the following list of possible songs to perform to (we were doing fans, fingers, poi and hoop, so not all songs were for hooping).
Shiya Isceffe/Brothers Of Peace
Touch The Sun/Original Soulboy
Reach 4 Freedom (DF's Vocal Mix)/Marques Wyatt
SFM/Basement Jaxx
Do Your Thing/Basement Jaxx
Firestarter/Prodigy
Nectarios / Phoenix (Vigi & Nectarios Mix)/Hybrid
phoenix/?
Out Of Control/Chemical Brothers
Emit/Collect (Rennie Pilgrem's Agatha Stomp)/Zero

Re: What's your fav music to hoop to?
Thu, May 25, 2006 - 8:20 PMSCI / Horning's '05 was my intro to the hoop. Have to do this I thought; soooooo beautiful and I'm fairly hyper-kinetic, so good match. So... DEFINITELY SCI. I've mostly been hooping to jam bands and electronica (psy-trance, breaks, tribal, world.) Specifically SCI, ALO, Tea Leaf Green, Lotus, Disco Biscuits, Midival Punditz, Boozoo Bajou, Reevu Rockers, Mafikizolo, Niyaz, Osiris Indriya, BassNectar, TICON, JAIA, and still exploring, which your picks will help fuel :-D

Re: What's your fav music to hoop to?
Sat, May 27, 2006 - 7:52 AMThis is a great topic! :)
I am a fan of hooping to many styles of music - particularly live-tronica, funky jam-bands and funky or tribal house music.
I have seen so many wonderful bands listed here and need to run outside and try hooping to some of them!
Shpongle should be fun, as recomended by ultaviolet, but I'm gonna try "Are You Shpongled?" since that's my favorite album by them.
I would also highly recommend hooping to:
Tabla Beat Science - Live at Stern Grove
Material - Hallucination Engine
Dr. Didg - Serotonality
St. Germain - Tourist
The Motet - Music For Life
DJ Logic - The Anomaly
Tuatara
The New Mastersounds
Lettuce
Mark Farina
Derrick Carter
Doc Martin
Miguel Migs
and probably my favorite - STS9 - Artifact
Keep on hooping! :) -

Sat, May 27, 2006 - 1:19 PMIf you do this, you'll thank me later. Find a recording of New Monsoon performing "Traveling Gypsies" (There's a really good one on archive.org from Dec 31, 2005 at The Bank in St. Petersburg--it's track 3)
have as many lighters as you have wicks so you can light up your whole fire hoop at once, and fire hoop to this song. It's perfect. -

Re: What's your fav music to hoop to?
Sat, May 27, 2006 - 6:47 PMGreat question, but HARD QUESTION!!
To guarantee myself hooping bliss:
Tribal Trance
Tribal House
Deep UK House
dnb, especially DieselBoy and Kosheen
World, esp. African and Brazilian Drumming
and....drumroll please....
Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven...one night a few years ago inside this tiny bar in downtown LA, it was the last track of the night...and I fell into a huge pot of bliss with my hoop around me...I'm not sure I even touched the ground. -

Happy hooping!

Re: What's your fav music to hoop to?
Fri, June 2, 2006 - 9:21 PMI started with SCI, too, in 1998 (thanks Ariana) under duress. I was just a shutterbug, but a demanding lil'gal made me embarass myself infront of the Mishawaka full of love puddle freaks.
The rework of jean Luc Ponty's Mauna Bowa was always a departure point for me. But 'Round the Wheel was written to that spin, I think.
SCI's San Jose is a fave when spinning to recorded music.
En Fuego? possibly. NM is fun to spin to.
So is Fareed Haque, oddly enough.
but a truly powerful experience is hooping to KanNal. (tribal jam rock with a hip hop edge)
Yonder can be fun, and I'll hoop to almost any live music.
BAssnectar could be fun... and to the folks looking for some of these, www.archive.org

Re: What's your fav music to hoop to?
Sun, June 4, 2006 - 10:19 PMyay for disco :D
My favoritist to hoop too is asian massive breaks and dubby tribal stuff. Groups like Androcell, Kaya Project, Ishq, Karsh Kale, Medival Pundits. Drums are awesome to hoop to also! Pretty much anything people belly dance too so I can pretend I am a belly dancer hehe.
Also, psy trance, but with me I like doing anything to psy trance. -

Re: What's your fav music to hoop to?
Mon, June 5, 2006 - 6:34 AMCan we refine this further? I'd like to hear some of these wonderful hooper's absolute favorite hooping song. It would be so cool to make a little cd that included songs like Basement Jaxx, Do your Thing and think, "Oh yeah! This is Xta's fav!"
(Should this request be another thread? I'm afraid people will not revisit it here but I don't want to pollute the thread either.)
I love Rusted Root and their song Ecstasy with the amazing drum solo that leads into it is one of my faves! -

Re: What's your fav music to hoop to?
Mon, June 5, 2006 - 9:50 AMI was just thinking the same thing.. but I want to make it iTunes specific so I can actually BUY those individual songs to make my new hooping CD :)

zoom 'cross the sky .....
Mon, June 5, 2006 - 10:29 AMWell, like most everybody I have lots of "favourites" and SCI's "Round the Wheel" is one definately one of my hooper "anthems".
But the song that makes me tingle the most when I hoop to it, and gets me really high is,
"Sometimes" by Michael Franti and Spearhead.
It's a song that I've danced to, jumped around to, and hooped to at Horning's Hideout, Quincy, Whistler and The Fabulous Commodore in Vancouver,
with my closest family and my newest hooper friends.
It's the song that will be my athem for this year when I turn 50 years old and it means a lot to me for so many reasons
Rocking soulfull beats, sweet lyrics and super-positive vibes.
Thank you Michael and thanks to all the freaky, happy and loving people that I have danced, hooped and zoomed with over the last few years.
Here is the chorus:
Sometimes ... I feel like I could do anything
Sometimes ... I'm so alive
Sometimes ....I feel like I could zoom across the sky
Sometimes ... I wanna cry
Here's the rest of the lyrics:
www.freakyandfree.com/lyrics.php
and I've just been hooping and dancing around my living room to this, so the "sometimes" is NOW !!
Thanks !! Caroleena, this was a great start to my day.
(p.s. I'm gonna see Les Claypool at The Commodore tonight) -

Wed, May 2, 2007 - 7:36 PM(i'm a newbie and *think* i did the threads correctly!).......
i just completed a hooping session to a band that's no longer together but is *awesome* for meditation with your hoop~~ Outback. digeridoos, drums, acoustic guitar, flutes.... did i mention dideridoos? they have upbeat, dance-able songs and some slower, more ~spinny~ tunes... does anyone listen to this band? they make you feel like you're hooping among kangaroos.....
-
Re: zoom 'cross the sky .....
Wed, May 2, 2007 - 7:59 PMNewbie too...I'm not sure I did the thread right!!
I would be interested in a hooping cd for sure! Right now I love hooping to DMB, Jay-Z, and the Spanish radio station. On a side note, I attempted blind hooping yesterday (in the kitchen) to Santana's "Black Magic Woman". 30 seconds later, the hoop flew off my neck and crashed into the counter full of breakables. Oops. =] I've decided that hooping blind should only be done outside.
Thanks for all the new music suggestions. I'm excited to see what happens with the new grooves!! =] =] =]

Re: zoom 'cross the sky .....
Thu, May 3, 2007 - 10:26 AMYou newbies did just fine :)
My latest search for music involves finding songs that are almost stereotypical choreographed numbers, like "Fever" becomes a sexy sultry song, the James Bond theme or Pink Panther theme gets sneaky spy moves.. y'know. Any ideas welcome, in terms of a song that automatically makes you think of a particular genre and style of movement!

Re: zoom 'cross the sky .....
Mon, May 7, 2007 - 7:38 AMI don't know if this is the type of thing you're looking for, but I tried hooping to Dave Brubeck's Take Five, and I loved how they jazziness of it made me want to do a lot of experimental moves. Of course, I'm a newbie and don't have much of an experimental repertoir so I'd love to see a good hooper hoop to this!

Mon, May 14, 2007 - 3:14 PMbump!
kiss!
Since I am now concentrating solely on my upper body moves,
(cuz I've got the lower body down except for the kick-start which I'll get eventually;)
I happened to be hooping one day at the beach when "Independent Women" by Destiny's Child came on Chris's ipod. There's a repeated line in the chorus that says "all the Independent Women throw your hands Up." It inspires some fantastic upper body machinations in me. :D
My all time favorites (today, anyway) are "Mary Jane" by Rick James and "If I Can't Have You" by Yvonne Elliman

Re: What's your fav music to hoop to?

BOTH "Mary Jane" and "Independent Women" are two of my all-time fave hooping songs!!! Bax loves "Independent Women," too, which is pretty damn cute, I gotta say. Did you see that post about Beyonce hooping?? *Sigh* I love her...
Other hooping faves (most anything by these artists is great hooping):
Masidyahu (Hasidic reggae/rap/rock--infuckingcredible)
Cee-Lo Green and or any group involving him
Musiq Soulchild
Mary J. Blige
Mos Def
Erykah Badu
and, of course, my brother's band, Hobex!

Moloko (especially Fun for Me)
Roisin Murphy- Ramamlama (Bang Bang)
Juno Reactor - Navras, and Swamp Thing are my current favorites
Boogie Heights - Halloween Theme House Mix
Dirty Vegas Sound System - A Night at the Tables (any track except the first one. be careful, this CD averages 120+ beats a minute)
Electric Oasis - The album is a compilation of middle eastern music fused with electronica
and
Kodo (traditional Japanese drumming mixed with World Beat sounds). -

Re: What's your fav music to hoop to?
Mon, May 21, 2007 - 7:37 PMThis has really got me going lately:
A-Trak: Dirty South Dance
This dude at the age of 15 in 1997 won the DMC World DJ Championship, and he hasn't stopped some of it is poppy trendy, but its all really catchy. He even samples oompaloompas in a track called "I don't like to turn around" the album is awsome. The best part is that it has seamless segues into beat bumpin' mad scratchin' party rockin goodness. Its dance music on dirty southern terms.
I couldn't find it on amazon (its still really new), but heres his myspace page:

Sun, June 17, 2007 - 11:03 AMIt's not new but yesterday I was listening to Fatboy Slim's "Halfway between the Gutter and the Stars" and after weeks of non-hooping that music got me to grab my ipod, speakers, and hoop and head up to the roof where I hooped for about half an hour till I was dripping with sweat. -

Re: What's your fav music to hoop to?
Fri, June 22, 2007 - 7:41 PMOMG, I'm feeling real out of touch here! With the exception of some of the disco stuff mentioned way earlier, I have never heard any of the music mentioned (at least not that I know of!). AAAAggggghhhh - I'm getting old!!! In the lack of any of the kind of music I have heard - I mentioned to my daughter the other day that I need to find some music to hoop to (been doing it without so far) and she puts on her Backstreet Boys CD! Uummmm, not quite what I was thinking of. Maybe I should dig some of the old 80's stuff and try it out while I research all that has been mentioned in this thread! I got alot of catching up to do!! LOL -
