Two inches off the waist PER MONTH!?!

I love hooping. It's great exercise and it's made me strong and fit. But when I see an ad that promises two inches off your waist every month until you're fit (however they define that), red flags go up for me. Check out this ad: www.sports-hoop.com/

Now I've used weighted hoops. They're a drag. They take the fun out of hooping and make it just an exericse in my opinion. Plus, I don't see the point. For me, it's not about the weight of the hoop but the isolations inherent in hooping and the aerobic workout of dancing, hopefully for long periods of time. I hoop a lot longer than 10 minutes a day with my regular hoop. What do you think? Anyone out there tried this? Did 10 minutes a day result in these drastic changes for you?

These hoops seem strange to me. They are as ugly as giant teething rings and they are ribbed for who knows who's pleasure. I dislike weighted hoops and even tried to talk someone at work out of buying this hoop. Here's the kicker though, she bought the hoop and she loves it. I'm like "Really?" She doesn't hoop dance, she enjoys just hooping for up to an hour a day on her waist. I've tried to to teach her some tricks but she doesn't seem interested. Just enjoys hooping with this weird, heavy hoop, that snaps apart on her sometimes but she still doesn't mind.
    Strange but true.

I don't understand those big hoops. They look so heavy and the bumps on them are supposed to massage you while you hoop. I don't know. I started hooping because I wanted to learn tricks and be crazy with my hoop. Now that I've started, just keeping it on your waist can be a bit repetitive.

Actually, if someone with extra weight around the middle doesn't exercise at all ,and suddenly does 10mins of waist hooping / 3 times a week with a 4lbs big daddy (or any type of exercises really!), I'm sure they'll see results! I own stretching bands and after 2 weeks of using them, I had visible results on my legs and arms, so I'm pretty sure those big heavy hoops might provide results for the abs. I personally started hooping with the goal of exercising more. I basically only waist hooped for my first few months late 06, 3 times a week in addition to my regular exercises. Didn't really feel the need to explore more, I did not have any hoopdancing aspirations (I actually wasn't even aware there were people "hoopdancing" out there)...................................... and then I found hoopers on the net, ordered a Hoopnotica hoop december 06 after failing to progress with my kiddie toy plastic hoop-despite my Bodyhoops dvd (problem was the hoop, not the DVD!). Joined tribe January 07 and now I don't even think of hooping as exercising, the hoop is now my dancing partner, my meditating tool, my anger defusing miracle, my best friend and so much more. I'm pretty sure a few of those who will first start hooping with heavy hoops will eventually wander to hoopdancing after feeling so many benefits inside the circle... If not, well, less fat around the waist is proven to reduce your risk of heart diseases so keep spinning them big, heavy hoop, people! And I really don't consider "hooping as a workout", any less rewarding than hoopdancing. We all have different expectations inside the circle, different definition of what we find pleasant so to someone else, dancing might not be "fun" but sweating and feeling the burn doing crunches might be a good time! Just like some people prefer hooping with smaller, lighter weight, others (ME) will prefer bigger, heavier hoops. I'm just so happy the hoop can please so many people, with different expectations :-)

P.S. since starting to hoop, I now have a waist! I always was thin but I couldn't even pinpoint where my waist was; it is now much more defined, which give me a nicer hip curve! Which in turn boosted my self esteem as well! Didn't lose any weight-did not need/want to- but it gave me a more feminine silhouette!

Happy one year Tribe anniversary Martine! So glad you're here.

If people dig these hoops, great. That makes me happy. People being healthy makes me happy. Claims of "2 inches per month from 10 minutes" though, bother me. I'd like to see the data that backs that up. But they're not publishing their data. That's one of the reasons I'd like to hear from folks who've actually tried it. Not that it's my thing. Like you, I like dancing with my hoop. It's not exercise. It's a relationship. But still, I'm curious.

I doubt they have a lot of data on this! But, if you are overweight and sluggish and you suddenly do 10 minutes exercise a day that makes you puff and constantly rubs round your waist while you are doing it, you will really make the muscles in your waist wake up and feel the burn and that alone will probably be enough to take the waist size down a bit a first. I don't think it would be 2" a month though. Perhaps 1" a month if you worked hard. But with all my hooping and weight loss etc, I've gone down 2 dress sizes, but I still have my basic shape, straight up and straight down! No sign of a definable waist yet.

They look a bit torturous to me! It's better that someone learns to use one for a while than not I suppose, but it does just reduce something glorious into something mundane that will get boring. I've seen videos on YouTube of people trying to hoop with these beasts and they don't seem to be able to get them going very well.

I suppose we could just make hoops from the thickest tubing we can find and fill them with sand to get extra weight, but it's the music, the full body movement and the dreaming inside the hoop that makes it work for me. Thick, thin, huge, big, smaller, I don't care. Just give me a hoop!!

Erm.... the promise is to trim *up to* 2 inches per month off your waist until fit. That could be 0 inches to 2 inches, legally...your results may vary, if you know what I mean. And as has been mentioned, depending on where you come from body-wise and what your metabolism is, this *could* be achieved, especially if combined with proper diet. I'd like to see some before-and-after pictures, though. ;-)

I also like the bigger heavier hoops. Maybe I am too fluffy to feel the lighter hoops right now ;-), and the intensity of the bigger heavier hoop is my preference as I will hoop longer with it :-). The medium size heavier hoop is good for making me work harder though so it has its place in my repertoire (when energy level is very high). Reducing carbs and hooping have lost me five pounds in the past couple of months and kept it off over the holidays. But it has not come off the waist only; I too still have the same shape I started with, just the clothes are looser. :-)

I'm coming from a different perspective. I do use hooping as exercise - a *fun* exercise far better than stationary bicycling or (YAWN) treadmill.

eeps look at that ribbing!!! ouch!

what really gets me is that they never mention hooping in the OPPOSITE DIRECTION!!! if the hoop is so heavy it causes you to lose inches fast, they had better make clear the repercussions of working only one side. the general public would probably never even think about it, but people could seriously injure themselves!
    • Re: Two inches off the waist PER MONTH!?!

I have to defend the ribbing. I have a ridiculous korean hoop, found on the street, I have a photo in my pictures (blue and white). It collapses beautifully, with connectors (like tv cable) that I wish I could reproduce, and has little MONKEY protrusions on the inside. The story behind these bumps is the idea that whacking your organs gets them working better. The monkeys give a little abdominal massage, that is pretty intense, but sometimes nice because the hoop moves rather slowly. With this hoop, tricks are uncomfortable, but I also don't feel like I need to do them, hooping at the waist is exciting on it's own.

I'm pretty sure (if i'm not deceived) that I lost at least an inch from hooping. In a couple weeks.. hooping for an hour almost every day and my hoop is heavy, but not weighted. I have to say though (and I believe it was caroleeena that helped!) I have been hooping in both directions. I always think of "ok this amount of time on this side, now lets switch.." whatever it may be.. learning new tricks or just exercising.

I watched the demo of the DVD. It looks like these things are used as weights just as much as they are used as hoops. Definitely not my idea of fun.

You know, maybe I'm thinking about this wrong. Perhaps used as weights, they could be good core strengtheners.

Two inches though? One month ... 10 minutes... I might have to do a clinical trial...

If I lost 10 inches off my waist I'd have a 16 1/2 waist. I mean I know that about 100 years ago most women has a waist between 19 and 22 inches but I would probably look strange. I'd do it for a month though and bump off two more inches. :)

great input hoopers. here's my experience.

my sister gave me one of the 5# steel rod, padded sport hoops, that is not ribbed...i always warmup w/ this hoop,( i call it the hoop of death)..i hoop in both directions and practise hand hooping (not easy mind you) for about 10 minutes on each side..i also use it for behind my back warmups to stretch out the back muscles. it took awhile but i can now do off body hooping with it, but dont recommend it unless you work out consistently with it. waist hooping, bi directionally and than handhooping prayer style, than right handed and than left handed in both directions. i am now able to stop the hoop and reverse it above my head. in the beginning it caused alot of bruising and i am quick to move out of the way when it falls. i hoop dance practise with it as well, since it rotates slower, i can practise more dance moves....but that took awhile. and i also cool down w/ slow rotations with it...even if you're totally into the spiritual aspect of the hoop, the heavy hoop can help you with dance ..it's not a trick hoop, it's a workout hoop.

i dont recommend this hoop if you dont have some core strength, cause that is what it is designed to do, build strength. and it does. i also read it's 2" reduction. i suppose that would depend on how much you need to lose. for me, i carry some mid age weight, but using the sport hoop to build strength gives me that cardio push quick and also builds your muscles in your upper arms. so, even if you have a wider girth than you want, the heavy hoop can help once you get used to it and the abs build strngth. no doubt it has reduced that midage arm hang down you will eventually get...sigh

like others have said the heavier the hoop, the harder you work, so your cardio shoots up..and stays in the "fat burning zone" while you weight down to the other hoops.
but, it is not one you want to use for more than maybe 20-30 minutes per 1.5 hr. session. (my avg.) and always go both directions, more so w/ this hoop.
the most on the heavy hoop is waist to shoulder and off body...i'll swing it around and do leg lifts. for me. i recently saw a hoop video of a girl did all done w/ a heavy hoop... it was pretty amazing, i'd be beat after using that hoop like the others. of course, she was at least 20 yrs. younger. try chest hooping w/ those hoops. bruises dalare. but, it has been the best hoop for me to learn reverse directional hooping..(i dont know tech term...when you turn in opposite direction of the hoop..that heavy hoop allows me to work my way around and free my arms up to do some dance moves while making 1/4 turns....

when i move onto our standard hoops, it's a different experience. the hoop is lighter, i'm warmed up an seem to be more agile. i feel adequately stretched out and then can practise more complex tricks and dance...

i have all sizes of hoops and start and end with the sport hoop. i have trimmed and toned, but it's all relative to size and how much you got to firm up...i still have a ways to go, but the sport hoop is a great tool in my hoop box...

btw, the ribbed ones dont interest me..they seem like those old ribbed rolling machnes in early exercise gyms...you'd kneel and place one leg against this ribbed wheel contraption and it would like pound out the flab...

another suggestion. put on 2 hoops, same size and # and you basically have the wieghted hoop described, only you can practise taking one off and other tricks.

enough from me..i can dance and get into the zone w/ that hoop, however it is primarily designed to be a core and strength builder..

Gypsy, do you have a link to the vid of the workout with a heavy hoop? I'm not the most imaginative and my moves are limited but I would sure like to know what is do-able with these heavies.

I'd still love to find a ribbed at a thrift store some day just to try... especially this week, my lower back could use some good faux shiatsu, lol.

Those are a rip off. My in-laws had one in the basement when I visited last.. I tried it & it was virtually un-hoopable.. and uncomfortable. Those are just gimmicks - I think - & would turn people off - to hooping!
I have found water hoops appeal to a lot of returning adult hoopers...
    Peace.all.

I started hooping in October - it looked like so much fun I just had to do it! I don't have a lot of time so another girl and I are committing to 30 mins a day during lunch at work. Sometimes I can get in another 30 mins at home. I lost 2" in the first month but then I was already physically fit. I have regained my ab definition that I had 3 years ago! I doubt I'll lose any more inches just because of my shape. But at 50 with abs, a 26 in waist and now getting the butt toned back up I'm more than happy. My coworker has lost 1.5" so far but she was slower at picking it up.

I'm using a normal hoop although I need to make a 36" one.

I have never used one of these hoops but I can say that when I started hooping, the first month I lost over 2 inches on my waist and hip porportionately. I was not hooping more than 10 - 15 minutes at a time then...but would hoop at least 5 days a week. Since that time (august) I have lost 5 inches off my waist and 20 pounds. It busted through a 3 year plateau. I wasn't grossley over weight, but over weight none the less. Hooping certainly is a hell of a workout, regardless of if your doing it for exercise or not.
  • Re: Two inches off the waist PER MONTH!?!

I think you lose more weight while hooping if you use a lighter hoop which you can have fun with and do fast tricks and transitions than with a way too heavy hoop that doesn't allow all the tricks and bodyparts. With a lighter weight hoop you can turn real quickly so it's more intensive.
I have to say I have never used a gym hoop though.
And I haven't really lost weight but got a better condition and stronger arms. (and my weight is already where it should be so I don't know if I'm the right person to say anything about it)
But I think with all common sense we can all agree that 2 inches per month is ridiculous + no one can make such a presumption, cause it all depends on the hoop, how much you hoop, on what bodyparts, how fast or slow, etc.

I got one of these hoops for my birthday a few years ago from some well-meaning freinds who owned a couple Curves franchises, because they knew I am a hooper. The thing is really heavy, and the bumps kind of hurt (gentle massage? I don't think so), so I didn't really use it much. I have much more fun with my dance hoops.
Perhaps I'll get it out of my garage, give it another whirl and run a test. Will 10 minutes a day result in 2" off my waist? I'm trying to slim down a bit anyway, so what could it hurt (except my guts from the ribbed-for-my-pleasure bumpies on it)?
I'll post back in a month with the results....
