Okay now I know I'm for sure not the only one wondering this....

How do you do that trick where the hoop rotates just around your shoulder? I can do it from neck to rotating just around one arm, but not the shoulder....

Any tips? Thanks!

hi yeah, this is a good one. its just like the one where you lift your arm up, duck your head out and let the hoop spin around your arm/shoulder and then pop your head back into the hoop, except you're just gonna lift the shoulder, duck your head out, let the hoop spin around and then pop your head back into the hoop. enjoy~

    Hi there,

I find this trick easier to do on a slightly larger hoop. I start by having the hoop going around my shoulders/chest as I slowly spin my axis in the same direction as the hoop is spinning. As the hoop wraps around the outside and back of the shoulder that I intend to spin it on, the head ducks out and the shoulder pops up. I've been enjoying using a hoop that comes up to my navel, but for this trick I have to use a hoop that comes up to my solar plexus.

    Be well, K

I struggled with this trick for a while, but finally figured it out.
I found that it's much easier with a larger, heavier hoop as Kara suggested.
For me, it's easiest to start with the hoop on my neck, then really isolate the shoulder - bringing it up to my ear while still keeping my neck elongated.
Also, the timing of when you duck your head out is very important -- and make sure the hoop has good momentum, but not too much or it'll go flying!...which can be fun, as long as it doesn't hit anybody :)

    would a video help?

I can do this trick but can only do it with my shirt off. Can you do it with clothing? If so, what kind of tape is on your hoop and how densely is it taped?

This is especially fun when you matrix it so you switch from shoulder to shoulder without going around your neck.

I've been working on the matrix, since actually figuring out what it was SUPPOSED to be.. (I first labeled a move "the Matrix from hooping.org" when it was really just one-arm hooping...)

Uhm.. it can be done with a slick-taped hoop, just harder... the main trick is getting your shoulder up and isolated enough - head out of the way, shoulder sticking out on the plane the hoop is moving...

A progression you might try is to have the hoop spinning around your neck, lift your shoulder in for one rotation (head just stays up), then drop the shoulder back out. Get used to doing that very high lift.. then do a couple head-drops where you stick your whole ARM up into the hoop, to remind yourself of the timing for dropping your head out.. then just try it and exaggerate the high shoulder/low head.. expect the hoop to fly the first 2-12 times :)

        Good luck!

        X.

sunbee...did you miss Gippy's video and the one I just posted? Or are you referring only to the matrix one? I'll try to get one made tomorrow. Also, over on the hooping videos tribe, Sharna Rose just posted her first video ever. She's a new-ish (5 months) hooper and did several beautiful executions of the one shoulder version.

OK - here's a short clip of this trick.
        www.youtube.com/watch
The hoop I'm using in this clip is made with 3/4", 160 psi tubing, has a 42" diameter, and is taped with vinyl & duct tape.
Keep in mind that everyone's body is different, and what works for me may or may not work for you.
I hope this helps some hoopers out there :)

<lol> I was just thinking that, Diana :)

              Hm, Matrix tips....

... be prepared to drop the hoops lots :)

... be able to do shoulder hooping on either shoulder, but without changing the direction of the hoop's spin (start it spinning around your neck, duck out and do one shoulder, then get your head back in and regain momentum, duck out and do the other shoulder)

...be able to go from shoulder hooping directly to your waist, by standing up in the hole as the hoop is on the outside edge of your shoulder and rolling onto your back (CCW spin, left shoulder, CW spin on the right shoulder)

... keep that same idea of the hoop rolling onto your back, but keep your head tucked DOWN so the hoop actually travels to go around your other shoulder, and then lean your body way down to isolate that shoulder and let the hoop spin around it a couple times.

... be prepared to drop the hoop lots and lots and lots!

Turning your body in the same direction that the hoop is spinning, as it is travelling across your back, can slow the timing down long enough to help you shift your body and isolate the second shoulder.

              Good luck!

              X.

so i know this may be sort of a lame question...since you just explained it, but i'm confused with the name "matrix"...is that when you do one shoulder and then the other shoulder and then pop up so the hoop is going around your waist?

                thanks Xta!
I've been working on being able to do this trick on both shoulders and in both directions, and it gets a little better each day...but the hoop still goes flying a lot!
I think your tips will be very helpful -- much appreciated! :)

Here's an old video some of you may have seen before, but it's using a 5 foot hoop (completely taped with slick regular old hardware store bought electrical tape) and right about 49 seconds I do the first shoulder rotation with my left (I'm a CCW hooper), then it goes back around my neck a bit and I do it with the right shoulder going in the same direction. It hapens a couple of times throughout the vid, and you can also see what I do if I'm in the middle of trying to execute this move and almost lose it (just stick your arm up and act like you meant to do it!) I've since figured out how to go shoulder to shoulder without going back to the neck (though I thought it was a bit of a different move that was called the matrix), but seeing as how I'm at work, I can't do a video right now.

slight tangent: Do you find that 160psi is uncomfortable on your neck? I've had a lot of problems with it... only using 100psi for neckhooping currently due to this. Only asking because I'm curious. ;)

I would love to see a video of the matrix trick as well if anyone's up to it. I'm not sure i've even heard of that trick before so i'm having a little trouble visualizing it...

Of course now that I'm at work i get online and see all these great tips.... guess i'll try between moving days sometime this week..... Thanks!

Hope no one minds that a baby newbie (sorry for the poor technique, lol) posts one of these things, but here are some fun little variants of one-shoulder tricks.

First there are some various ways to get into it, then some various ways to get out of it (I forgot a couple: come out into shoulder hooping, come out into chest hooping, etc), and then some examples of how you can merge the the ways to get into it and out of it.

Sorry for the bad lighting. Its my first video with that camera, and didnt think it would be that dark. (Warning: file is 11 MB )

You were awesome, definately a keeper that I will refer to. I love that shoulder then spiral up from it, looked fantastic to me! Would love to see more of your videos :D
      Thanks much, real helpful!!

we worked on this move tonight in a class! it was the first time i ever attempted it and i found myself taking a breath before i duck, as if i was diving under water. i discovered it doesn't really help in doing the move, but to me it demonstrated how ducking my head was a bigger step, developmentally, than getting the technique of hooping on my shoulder.

OKay, maybe this ain't the Matrix.... I apparently forgot that Kandice used her arms for this move:

      www.hooping.org/archives/v...cetrick.mpg

What shall we call this one, then? The Over-the-shoulder-hooping-holder? (ACTUALLY.. have you seen the move where people have the hoop on the OUTSIDE of their neck, but are using their chin to hold against their shoulder while spinning? A Vancouver Hooper (Daina) came back from High Sierra and showed me that..

(PS to Daina - I finally got the behind the back thumb-twirl today, will show you next time I see you..)

"What shall we call this one, then? The Over-the-shoulder-hooping-holder?"

        LOL - I love that! :)
I would say that this move could still be considered a variation of the Matrix - perhaps the "Armless-Matrix" or "Shoulder-Matrix".
I suppose you could do a "One-Armed-Matrix" also...although I still haven't successfully accomplished any of the above.

I do love to say "over-the-shoulder-hooping-holder" though! :)

Hey Khan - I was in your class tonight! That was my first time trying any duck outs too, and it was very psychological for me. I kept thinking I'd bash myself in the head with the hoop (not an unfounded fear because I've already done that several times trying other tricks), but once I gathered up my courage and took a deep breath (what is it about ducking that makes people want to do that?), I was so proud of myself.

Christabel recommended ducking out when you see that open space in your hoop around the two o'clock position. That's for CCW hoopers. If you are a clockwise hooper, I guess it would be around the ten o'clock position.

ok... so now i am feeling like a video whore, BUT.. the camera was already there, soooo....

    is it????

No, that's the Over the Shoulder Hooping Holder <grin>

I laughed out loud to see your movie title... just needed a red and a blue pill to go along with it! :)

I think we should STOP calling this move or concept "The Matrix".. (it was prob me who started this mis-naming, actually), because that label is already applied to Kandice's trick which most definitely uses the arms to anchor the hoop while ducking out of it...

Anyway, nice move, and nice movie! I really liked the slow-mo part in the middle - we could all start adding that to our how-to videos, instead of just trying to hoop slower! :)

Thanks for sharing, and for the clear vid (did you post it over in the Hooping Videos tribe yet?)

      X.

It's funny how many matrixes (matrices?) there are. That Neo-dodging-the-bullets backbend has been incorporated into hoop, poi, staff and contact juggling. It's cool seeing them all because while in all of them the body is doing the same thing, the tool/toy/prop is doing something completely different.

Sayyida, thank you so much for this video, especially the slow-mo portion....... Right now I'm the only hooper that I know here in Muncie, and I watch these videos during work, which makes it hard to duplicate when I'm actually hooping, but seeing it slowed down will really help me keep it in my head for when I try it tonight.

The shoulder move and the vertical pass through are on my practice agenda for tonight.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

And Xta...thanks for all the extra helpful directions and great trick names. heeheehee....over the shoulder hoop holder.....HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
