Cutting up Fablon (sticky back plastic stuff)

topic posted Wed, April 30, 2008 - 12:32 PM by  Gail
Hello I have found some beautiful shiny and sparkly fablon in Wilkinsons (in the UK) but it is a nightmare to unroll it and slice it into strips with a stanley knife (I am quite an impatient person to be fair and quite dangerous with a stanley knife too) it seem there must be an easy way of slicing into nice rolls while it is still rolled up but the guillotine in the stationers all had guards on them and the man said they wouldn't cut through the plastic either does anyone have any ideas for my simple brain

Thank you very much xxxxxxxxxxxxx

My friend tried slitting tape by putting it on her quilting board and then using a knife and it worked, but it took a lot more time and the tape wasn't cut precisely. It's definitely not something I would recommend for more than a few inches for a patch up job!

I bought a tape slitter from identi-tape. I know that shipping and customs can be expensive from identi-tape to the UK, but this is just to give you an idea of what kind of tool exists to do the job! It's really easy - just put the end of the tape roll in and pull.

    • Thank you but I should have been a little more specific this stuff comes in rolls which are 45cm across and about 150cm long so I couldn't squash him into a tape splitter!!!

but its so pretty that its almost worth rolling it out and cutting it into strips which is what I am doing at the minute and it wears really well and it goes on nicely. I was just wondering if there was a specific plastic tape roll chopping tool that I didn't know about as the men in my local hardware shop practically hide now when they see me come in as they know I am going to ask them for something to do with hoops that they are not going have. They don't like to help :(
      • Yup this is exatly what i do at the moment beacuse i have no access to shops with pretty tape.

I have found that it is easyer to use sisors and just work your way down the roll cutting of long strips. It helps if the sticky plastic has a grid on the back though.
        • I HAVE FOUND A CUNNING THING!!!!
My rolls of 25mm piping always come with a straight bit and i stuck the extra bit of piping down the roll of fablon (without taking the outside plastic off) and then cut it with my ratcheting pvc cutters you get nice straight lines and the outside plastic keeps it together in handy little rolls and the pipe inside stops it from buckling. I shall no doubt find that i have more fablon then i have extra pipe but I am for the minute happy as I am a lazy mare and like to find a quick way to do things and if i blunt my cutters I shall sharpen them on my new bench grinder ( i love hoop related tools) xxxx
