aaaugghH!
i have phoned EVERYWHERE! i cannot find 160 psi 3/4-1 inch polyethylene tubing anywhere!
i live in calgary and want to make a bunch of hoops to figure out what size i like.
a friend suggested just getting the 100psi style and filling it with water to add more weight.
any suggestions????

Re: impossible to find in Canada- 160psi!!
Fri, March 9, 2007 - 1:34 PMFor 3/4", try asking for 200psi instead, or calling it "water services pipe" (that's what it is known as, here in Vancouver) - have you been calling Irrigation and Plumbing supply, or just the big chains like Home Depot? The specialists are more likely to stock it...
1" 100psi is a decently stiff pipe as well.
Water will actually change the way the hoop moves.. and it is neat, but the momentum created by the water's movement is pretty wonky. Another way to add weight that won't affect the movement is to do a few layers of duct tape underneath your decorative layer.
Good luck! (and is there a Calgary Hoopers tribe yet? A bunch of you keep PM'ing me.. y'all should get together!)

Re: impossible to find in Canada- 160psi!!
Fri, March 9, 2007 - 1:56 PMi have phoned the big plumbing suppliers asking for exactly what i want and then when they say they don't carry it, i ask if they have anything quite similar to it.
the answer has been no to that as well.
so- in your opinion Xta, would 3/4" 200psi be more appropriate, or 1" 100psi?
i know i can get the 1" stuff easily from Totem. so, you'd recommend a few layers of duct tape for this one?
i'm very new to hooping, so these will be my first hoops! (hence all the questions). however, i am wanting to do tricks with the hoop (i'll make an extra heavy one for exercise purposes as well).
thanks for your help already. -

Re: impossible to find in Canada- 160psi!!
Fri, March 9, 2007 - 2:01 PM3/4" 200psi is my standard tubing, and I'm very happy with it.. . the industry standard for 'water services pipe' changed from 160 to 200 about a year ago, and I haven't noticed much difference between the two. Other option: did you ask if they'd do a special order of it for you? I did that a few times from a regular hardware store, until I found my current supplier, and I was happy with the tubing they brought in...
The 1" 100psi will probably be fine as-is without duct tape - it winds up being heavier due to the larger pipe diameter.
I'd actually recommend you steer away from the extra-heavy hoop - the exercise benefits are achieved by the repeated movements, not so much by a weight resistance, and the bruising force of the heavy hoops is pretty huge...

Re: impossible to find in Canada- 160psi!!
Sun, March 11, 2007 - 1:37 PMhey i just bought 3/4" 160psi from a local home hardware. they dont have it in stock but this is the second time ive ordered it from them! when i pick it up next week i can tell you the item code, and im sure if you have a home hardware they could get it too!
i had your extact same problems though! i phoned every specialty irrigation/rona/home depot and no one had it.
3/4" 160 is by far my fav and a couple wraps of duct tape around 1/2" connectors has been making me some really nice hoops! good luck!! -

Re: impossible to find in Canada- 160psi!!
Thu, March 15, 2007 - 9:31 PMCindy special ordered some in Toronto, but then we couldn't find the connectors.
Really, it doesn't need to be all that specific. These are your first hoops so you won't know what you're missing/really want. Home depot regularly stocks 3/4'' 'green stripe' and 1" 'red stripe' (and the connectors) and they both do great. -

Re: impossible to find in Canada- 160psi!!
Fri, March 16, 2007 - 5:40 AMI got the 3/4" red stripe, and it seems a little too light.
I can do some tricks and am learning but it loses momentum quickly.
Is the green stripe the 160psi?

Re: impossible to find in Canada- 160psi!!
Fri, March 16, 2007 - 7:48 AMhaha i have done the impossible *dun de dunnnn*
the item number for 3/4" 160psi that you can order from ANY home hardware is #3250911
as for connectors i buy them at RONA, in the plumbing deptartment. you can buy dark plastic ones for $.49, but i buy the white plastic because they dont have a little ball sticking out that blocks you from being able to connect the tubing fully. i pay $.78 for them. but ive used both and both work.
i hope this cheers someones day and saves them 800 phone calls!
happy hooping! -
