I am planning on vending a booth at a fairly large festival in Virginia Beach. One of the requirements on the contract is to have liability insurance. (Though when I spoke with the event coordinator, she said it wasn't needed) But I will be signing a contract with this stated as attained.
Has anyone had to deal with this situation and how should I go about it. After required permits, taxes, and such I now get why vendors charge so much for their products.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks, Lois

That question goes along with how professional do you want to be. Pay taxes you may as well pay insurance. Being prepared over being sorry. How much is it worth to you?
I have been thinking about taking the big plunge and go get legal insurance so that I have someone in my back pocket to help me out with the questions and concerns, getting a business lic for taxes and write-offs, ectera.
How legit do you need to be or want to be?

Granted, having liability insurance makes you more of a target for lawsuits than not. But I think what you're looking for is "vendors insurance" which you can get from Specialty insurance:

Once again, I am having to get vendor's insurance. I ended up not getting it the last inquiry but will need it for up and coming festivals.
Does anyone have a policy (it has to be a vendor's and not a performance policy) that cost less than Specialty's. Theirs is $280.00 till Sept.
I have google'd info. but what mostly comes up is special event insurance and another company that is over a $1000.00 for a year of coverage.
Any suggestions would be helpful, I have to decide fairly soon.

Does anyone in Canada know where I can get insurace from? I am teaching classes out of the civic center here, and they require insurance. But they don't know who I should talk to, and I asked a couple of other instructors but they all have full-on business insurance that covers absolutely everything. I just need something small just to show the center the paperwork....

Lea, I checked with my local Statefarm and she said her underwriter would not sign off a pkg. of insurance for this particular vending. She gave me the name of an independent broker and a pkg. was put together costing almost $600.00.
Could you give me a little more info. on the coverage you have. It is possible I am requesting more liability coverage. The festivals I want to do are asking for 1 million per occurrence and 2 million in aggregate.
Thank you and everyone for the suggestions!

If you are in the SF Bay Area you might consider a Theater Company Member of Theatre Bay Area. Their Theater Company Membership includes "Liability insurance services for performances."

If you are somewhere else you might consider calling a local theater or performance art group and see what they say.

You can try www.actinspro.com - they have policies for art/craft shows for short period of time. I bought online and got certificate in email. My additional insured (festival or show) got it as well. I think it's very convenience.
Or just call them to ask about your situation. They are nice people.
