Hoop spinning (or whatever it's called)

Are there any tutorials out there for spinning the hoops outside the body in poi-fashion? It's a really cool effect and I'd like to try it.

A simple "figure 8" or "chase" can be done close handed. To get the "3 beat weave" (as seen in the video) you must learn to use your thumbs and fore fingers as a pivot point to get the 3rd rotation on each side of the body. In my video in the up close sections you can see this happening. The biggest and most important tip I can think to give is to make sure you learn your weaves or chase both in forward and reverse rotation, this will open up all sorts of options for turning and spinning. Another thing that is important is to stretch, this style puts a lot of strain on your shoulders, arms and rotator cuff. If you start to hurt, stop, rest and pick it back up another time.

Heres another couple of videos I put up a while ago that might help:

      good luck!

And I'll see if I can't put together a more informative video soon with better close ups and explanations.

yes, learning to loosen your grip while twin hooping and letting the hoop spin on your thumbs and fingers is so important! if you get a good momentum going, all you need to do is guide them.

also, it really helps to learn some moves with poi (you can make sock poi for really cheap) or long straight sticks so you can understand where your three beats are going and how to keep your planes crisp. if i had tried a three beat weave without getting it with poi first, man, i would be so lost!

now to go and learn the backward weave so i can turn like all the big kids do... :)

Yes... Yes... Please!!! A detailed video would be great! Like a dummys guide to 3 beat weave and other poi hoop tricks :) ... cause I have watched these two videos about a 100 times and I just cant seem to figure out your timing... but it looks like too much fun!

          Three-beat Poi spinning with hoops:

(practice this on one side only, then the other side only, and then try it with two hoops.. and yes, bonking yourself in the face is part of this and most other hoop training!)

First progression: hand hoop spinning forward-and-down with the hoop beside your body

Second progression: draw figure-eights with the gripped hoop, from shoulder to shoulder

Third progression: hand hoop beside your body, figure-eight to the opposite shoulder and back, hand hoop beside your body

Fourth progression: hand hoop beside your body, figure-eight to the opposite shoulder and release your fingers off the top of the hoop to allow it to do one full rotation around your thumb, the regrip the top/leading edge of the hoop and complete the figure-eight back to your starting side. Repeat.

          Practice this on either hand.

Then, practice it with your non-hooping arm held up at shoulder height - the first figure-eight passes OVER your arm, then the thumb roll happens UNDER your arm before the hoop returns to its starting side.

Time to get even more challenged? Grab a second hoop, and try follow-the-leader (two-beat weave) figure-eights - pick one hoop to always go FIRST, and set yourself up by holding both hoops on the floor with your hands on top, hoops and hands parallel, thumb side facing forwards...then pivot the hoops so your following hand's thumb is chasing your leading hand's pinky as they swing the hoops through those figure-eights.

Got that? Okay, NOW... the hoop that is your LEADING hoop will, at some point, be leading ACROSS your body/other arm... this is when you throw in that thumb spin you practiced earlier, as the second/following hoop has moved to be on the same side of your body, and the lead hoop now gets to do a thumb roll underneath the second hoop's arm.. as IT has now moved into lead hoop position going ACROSS your body to the other side!

Clear like mud? Try chanting 'cross, open, thumb, cross, open thumb' - cross is your leading arm reaching across your body, 'open' is your second arm following the first arm into an open/uncrossed position, and 'thumb' is the first/crossed arm doing a thumb roll on that same crossed side.

          Yeah :)

          Good luck!

          X.

Although this is for poi instruction this video really helped me because I am a visual learner and I get lost with written instructions - even if they are fantastic in retrospect now I can do it (Xta and Barry). However going in reverse with two is proving to be a tad more complicated ;)

AWESOME, thanks Xta!!! I also checked out the poi video, and I've been doing the poi socks. I SORT of have the 5 beat weave going on (for a few seconds befored they get tangled up). LOL. It's something I can do more easily in rthe house too without wrecking stuff.

But now I actually ordered some real poi and a poi DVD. Another fun thing to learn! Thanks all ya'll.

I also really like to learn poi hooping. I can do a figure eight with two hoops and some similar stuff but that's about it. And I think I really need a tutorial with slowmotion video or something, so if anyone would like to do that please post it here!

Sharna made a video with slow-mo bits in it for the 2 hoop 3 beat weave. I still can't get it, but I think I'm just incapable! Search out Sharna Rose on YouTube and you'll find it.

PS Hope I've not just repeated information from above. The thread had gone cold and I've just read the last post rather than the whole thread again, so sorry I've I'm repeating thins.

I'm just starting to work on this as well! I find that using very small hoops and then working up to my full sized ones works pretty well because I'm learning the basic movements of how the hoop feels in my hand without so MUCH hoop! I make most of my hoops, but I found these teeny tiny ones at sports authority that are perfect!
