psihoop...what would you change or keep the same?

I'm getting a psihoop for my birthday and I'm uber-scuber excited about it!! Yay!!

So to those who own one, I'm wondering what you love, love, love (besides everything) about it and what would you do differently, if anything??

Just curious. I want the grooviest hoop ever. :)

  • I LOVE my psi hoop! I have a Dragonfly with some Elfin lights in it. It's about 38 inches with the stiff tubing.
It didn't survive Burning Man very well, though. The switch isn't working very well now, but I've never met anybody who had problems with their psi hoop. I just don't take very good care of mine. I'm planning on getting a new one and getting this one fixed very soon.
    • Did you keep it taped over? Do you think its dirt/water damage or mechanical?
I want one too, someday. I read someone who said they didn't like the soft version and with fast hooping it can pull on the circuits? I think I'll get the stiff version too.
      • My psi hoop is over a year old. I've taken it to Burning Man (just made sure to tape over the switch). I've collapsed it to take on planes -- domestically and internationally. Over its lifetime, I've bumped it, dropped it, totally enjoyed it ... and it's still going strong.

The only problem I ever had with it is that about a month ago, it stopped holding a charge. I thought it was a problem with the hoop, but after talking to Patrick, I realized that the hoop was fine -- it was a problem with the charger. He sent me a new charger within a few days, and the hoop lit up like new.

I'd totally recommend psi hoops. In fact, I'd like to order another one soon! Have fun with yours~
    • Umm sounds/looks like a loose connection or bad solder. I broke my SuperMorph from supperhooper.org when I fixed it the first time it acted kinda like that too because I'm not the best at soldering I took it apart and resoldered it and it works great now. Probably an easy fix, but getting to the problem depending on how the hoop is made, could be messy.
  • I have really enjoyed my psi hoop. I got it in may, over a year and a half ago and it still works well. I have yet to see an LED hoop with as dazzling light effects. If I could change something, I would have more rigid tubing and maybe 2" smaller diameter (I think mine is 36"). The flex of the tube combined with the weight of batteries at one point, creates a lot of flux in the hoop when in motion. After reading a couple of these posts, I'm wondering if there's a new power option. Mine is powered with 4 double A's that are positioned all at one spot. I think it really throws off the balance. With that play of weight shifting back and forth, the connection comes a little loose so I have to re-tape that spot tightly and regularly.

happy psychedelic hooping birthday to ya!
    • i've had my psi hoop since October 2004 and its awesome. I got the plug-in rechargable kind, so the batteries are evenly distributed around the hoop. I also got the stiffy tube so there's not too much flex. Mine was custom made with 16 l.e.d.s (costing me around $360), the only thing i would change is maybe adding more lights, for more bling...otherwise, it was a great investment and its awesome just hanging in my room as lighted decor when i'm not hooping it up.

Aryam, your PSI hoopdance is awesome, you should see if Patrick can fix your hoop. Looks like its just a short in the wiring so it may be easily fixable.

      yay for lighted hoops!
  • Ooh congrats on getting a psihoop!!! I got mine just before this past Burningman, brought it out there with me and had a BLAST with it. It's very durable, it's been dropped and thrown and banged, my non hooping friends and kids have used it and it still worked perfectly. I love that it's rechargeable, it's so convenient. I even bought a car charger for it so I can bring it camping. It's my single most favorite possession and well worth every single penny! The only *very little* thing I'd want different with it is having the Elfin LED's (the ones that fade rainbow colors) to fade in sync with eachother. When I turn on my hoop they stay in sync for about 1 min then they all go off time. But that's a very minor complaint :)

Which LEDs did you decide on?
  • I am curious as to how many LEDs people decided to get and what mixture of lights. It's almost overwhelming to have so much freedom to customize a psi hoop, so I'm hoping that fellow hoopers are willing to share their knowledge!

I definitely want mostly dragonfly LEDs, but couldn't decide between adding some extra elfin or rainbow LEDs. Any suggestions or helpful info? I think I get so mesmerized by the videos that I'm too hypnotized to think!
  • Ohh, my first post on tribe!

I've had my psi for about 6 months. love it to death. the best gift i ever bought myself.

However, keep in mind, it's going to be a lot heavier than the other hoops your used to. and also, the more lights you get, the heavier it'll be.

i recently discovered my friend got a custom made 16 light psi hoop done in really light skinny tubing. and it was about the same price as the larger tubing equivalent. super jealous.

so i'd say, keep weight in mind.

get a skinnier custom made hoop if possible. and smaller = better.
    • I'll tell you when I get mine! I just ordered it last week with 12 rainbow, 4 dragonfly, and 4 elfin! I love rainbows and I hoop slow or fast so I mixed them all!

I have only had mine for a few weeks but so far i have had no problems at all.
        So i don't think i would change a thing.

One thing i am working on though is a solar power charger. Cos i do shows at festivals and i hate having to leave my hoop in a strange place to charge. My theory is that considering the hot strong the austrlian sun gets i should be able to make a solar charger that charges a big battery then a device that charges the hoop of that. This way i don't have to leave my hoop in the sun and it will get a constant stream of power.
  • I love mine too, except for the weight. It's substantially heavier than the smaller, lighter hoops that I prefer now. Other than that, it's a fun hoop. I have 8 elvans and 8 dragonflies (4 pink 4 white) and it's pretty.

I agree with the person who mentioned the switch not working well after burning man. I didn't tape mine either, because I was turning it on and off too frequently (the batteries only last about 3-4 hours, and since I'd often be out more hours than that at night I wanted it to last, so would only light it when I was hooping, or when I needed to find my friends...it was a great homing beacon.) But...in the future I'll tape the switch and other holes...playa wasn't kind to the switch.
    • Thanks to you and (na)tash(a) for mentioning the weight issue. I hadn't really considered that aspect, but Patrick was kind enough to email me a list of the different tubing sizes and weights. I compared them to my existing hoops to help me decide (picture me weighing my various hoops on a tiny kitchen scale).

I'd also never really paid too much attention to the size of my hoops because I have several that are different diameters and tubing sizes, but ordering a psi hoop made me really think about which one I'm most comfortable with. I've been using a 42" hoop because it's my favorite color combination (I know, I'm totally superficial!) but once I had to decide what size to get my psi hoop, it made me start playing with some of my neglected hoops. I decided to get a 39" hoop, so I've been trying to use some of my smaller hoops lately. Now I can hear their cries of, "Pick me, pick me!" when I decide which hoop to take outside!
  • I ended up getting a 39" diameter hoop with the 7/8" HDPE tubing. I have a mixture of dragonfly and rainbow rider lights.

In retrospect, I wish I had gotten just a few (even two) elfin lights. Patrick had suggested putting in some elfin lights or some lights with one constant color to anchor the movement of the other lights. At the time, I thought no, that's boring - bring on the blinking lights! Now that I've had my hoop for a few days, I can see why he suggested a few steady lights. Don't get me wrong - I LOVE all the lights and my hoop is dazzling, but I can see how even just two or four slower, less spazzy lights would make a difference in the appearance.

I also wish I had gotten the 1" tubing (which is the same as our regular 3/4" tubing). Although I have another hoop that is the same diameter as my psi hoop, I'm more used to the 3/4" and I'm still adjusting to the size/weight of this one. It's amazing what a difference 1/4" can make!

These are all minor details though. I love my psi hoop! I get mesmerized watching all the lights - it's so beautiful in action!
  • It looks like I'm getting a psihoop for my birthday this year too (my birthday happens to be the first day of a regional burn called Playa del Fuego) and it's been great to read all of these testimonials so I can decide which one I want.

I think I'm gonna go 38" (stiff) and I wanna have some steady lights in addition to any that might fade or blink. I need to look at Patrick's site more because I don't see an ordering option that lets you mix what kind of lights you want, I only see that you can order Elfin, Dragonfly, OR Rainbow Rider, not combinations thereof.

    :::off to do some research:::
    • Can't wait to see a video of you spinning a psihoop, Ter'i. Custom order stuff is just an email negotiation with Patrick, I found. Email him directly and ask questions. Be advised that he's heading to the UK early this month (maybe even already today), but I'm betting he reads and sends emails from there (just can't build hoops until he gets back).
