How do you get the tape to stay perfectly flat on a hoop? How do you make it so that you dont have to keep cutting the tape in the middle of the process to re-angle it so that it doesnt double over on itself too much?

also, i've found that the narrower the tape is the easier it is. for my base layer in particular i use really thin strips so that i have more control and less wrinkling and overlap.
i've had good luck with my metal tape layers staying straight, as long as i'm patient, probably because you can't accidentally stretch it wrong like you can with cloth and electrical. there's a trade off there though--if you mess up a bit with cloth or electrical it's easy to correct as you go and not have to cut it, but if you mess up with metal it gets unbearably wrinkled and you can't overcorrect to fix it cuz the table doesn't stretch.

Re: How do you do it?
Tue, March 8, 2005 - 7:26 PMi suggest two things
1) make sure that there is about 1/2" of space between the tape as you go around, so that the tubing is showing.
2) really use your hand on the understroke of taping to guide it around the hoop. this way you can really feel if there are any wrinkles, and you have more control. so, if you are taping from left to right, use your right hand/palm to guide and smooth the tape from underneath.
i do these two things and have no problem using the 2" tape.
hope this helps! -

Wed, March 9, 2005 - 7:35 AMyea... after a hoop or two youll get it just fine....
i also feel like gaffers tape is sooo much easier to work with...
the thinner the better....
and... you can stretch it in any direction to make up for wrinkles
or errors in the distance between rows of tape. -

Re: How do you do it?
Thu, March 10, 2005 - 10:49 AMThanks so much all! I've made at least 15 hoops in the past year or so and they are getting better, but they're never perfect. I guess it is the 2" tape that getts all bunched up, especially duct tape.
Orange-- What exactly is metal tape? Is it the sparkly stuff?

Re: How do you do it?
Thu, March 10, 2005 - 11:50 AMyuck - duct tape is sticky and hard to work with. I'm a devotee of Gaffer's (cloth) tape.
The only other trick I've learned is to only give myself about three inches of slack to work with, and on every single rotation (at least of the first color) make sure it's even. It's kind of painstaking, but it definitely makes a difference for the final product. -

Re: How do you do it?
Fri, March 11, 2005 - 10:14 AMThe thing that worries me about gaffer tape (though i do use it a bunch) is that it's not sticky enough and i have a hard time doing certain tricks (like shoulder hooping) with it. duct tape sticks so well, but it is a huge pain to tape with. -

Re: How do you do it?
Fri, March 11, 2005 - 10:29 AMreally? I found the opposite, that gaffers tape grips more to my skin and clothing than anything else - and feels better on skin than duct tape or electrical tape, for sure. Maybe we're not using the same kind ... I get mine from findtape.com .... or, maybe, I'm just not doing such advanced tricks yet, so I haven't noticed the difference .... -

Re: How do you do it?
Fri, March 11, 2005 - 11:31 AMoooo, new tape website? thanks reagan!!
yeah elana, i'm just talking about glitter and metallic-sheened tape. mccormick's stuff. ope--just looked it up, it's called mirror tape. i prefer mirror tape to the glitter or hologram stuff--i think it's a lot prettier and sleeker--but it's a bitch to work with cuz you cannot make a SINGLE mistake. totally unforgiving and you can see *every* wrinkle very easily.
(how are you, btw? gonna come see us again anytime soon?)
oh, and i stopped using duct tape (except occasionally as an underlayer that's totally hidden) because it looks too rough and the texture isn't smooth enough. it's aaaaaallll about gaffer's tape, yo. it does come unstuck once in a while--more likely to peel off--but if you can minimize the cutting and restarting it ends up working fine.
goddamn, this is a science. i need lessons. jason wants to do a taping workshop--y'all want to fly out here? ;)

Re: How do you do it?
Fri, March 11, 2005 - 5:32 PMOrange-- ya ya ya! good idea to use duct tape as an underlayer. i actually just made a hoop yesturday using gaffers as an underlayer. its kinda boring white, so i figured i could spare it since it doesnt glow (which it really should, cuz white rocks in blacklight!)
i just spent over a $100 on tape (identitape)... im in a frenzy!!!
i dunno when ill be out in sf next... possibly for the fire arts festival. if not ill see ya'll on the playa!!!
damn! i wish chicago was warm enough for outdoor hoopin...

Re: How do you do it?
Fri, March 11, 2005 - 5:32 PMbtw--
i checked the tape site you mentioned, but i think that identitape has slightly better selection, at least in terms of color. i like the idea of 'extra-sticky' gaffer's tape, though.
(if ANYONE ever sees gaffer's tape in a hue of orange that doesn't look like it was taken directly off of a flourescent highway sign, please to let me know asap :) -

Re: How do you do it?
Sat, March 12, 2005 - 7:54 PMTry Studio Depot. I've seen regular orange (non-neon) on film sets, so I'll be they'll have it, seeing as they're an expendable supply store. And they give you a discount if you tell them you're a hooper.

Re: How do you do it?
Sat, June 7, 2008 - 5:20 PMIt's three years since you posted this! so maybe you've found your orange by now - but I just got a lovely non-fluorescent orange at a theatrical lighting place. It's a gaffers tape, "Professional grade" made by Permacel. A little bit pricier than Pro-Tape, but they do have some lovely colors - including a very nice yellow, and this orange. Got it from Barbizon, www.barbizon.com
