Who is the best hooper?

topic posted Thu, April 14, 2005 - 8:57 AM by  St(br)ainless
I know it's subjective, but I'm curious.

Saw Cirque do Soleil's "Zumanity" a few weekends ago. The hula hoop girl did some wild stuff hanging from a cable, doing one on the cable, one on her arm, one on her waist, one on the ankle, simultaneously. The hoops all started on her waist and migrated outward.

How does that trick rate?

Sorry, I'm new to all this. Excuse my ignorance.

thanks,

sH

Wow: that's a loaded question that I'm not touching with a ten foot pole!

      ***this is only my opinion***

I'll answer it this way -

the best hooper, in my opinion, is *always* that person who at a party who says - "Wow - I could never do that." They are then invariably handed a hoop, given a few tips, and five minutes later they're beaming with delight. Those are the best hoopers.

Who has the most skills? Who makes the most money doing it? Who's got the most fans raving about them on the internet? These things are just so unimportant and the complete antithesis of what hooping is about. In my humble opinion.

Feel free to argue with me.

Who is the most entertaining hooper to watch?

        I realize it's all subjective.

Also, what of the skills the Cirque person displayed (described in the original post)? Were those skills unusual?

        thanks.

As you might expect, all the performers in Cirque du Soleile possess skills that are unusual and advanced. They are professionals. So yes: the hooper you saw in Cirque du Soleile was exeptionally skilled.

That said, this group is for those of us who hoop for the joy of it, and for whom titles like "most entertaining" or "best" don't really apply.

Thanks for answering the Cirque question.

I'm not necessarily asking about the people in this group. I did not phrase the original question correctly.

It's similar to asking "who's your favorite band?" Some people have one, some don't.

this question makes me not want to hoop in groups where there is judgement of skills.

each person has a beauty within that radiates through their expression of their passion.
for many of us hooping is our passion.
to rank who is better/best seems so strange to me.

each artist expresses in an individual and dynamic way that is a window to their beauty inside.

the more a person is in touch with their individual and personal expression is how it is "better"

      absolutely. I couldn't agree more.

I think this guy is just a troll.

I'm not giving it anymore energy.
      • Re: Who is the best hooper?

        Keep in mind, guys...
people who dont hoop dont really understand what its about.
judgement of skills is super important to people who dont have them... and im not saying this guy doesnt... but he doesnt hoop (or do you?)

its like, if you have never juggled before and dont have any friends that do... and then you saw it being done for the first time, you'd want to see it more and more and you'd probably wonder where you should go and who you should see, right?

so dont be pissed at this question. it may sound awful to you, but i think its ok (even though i agree with ya'll and could never answer it)
        • Re: Who is the best hooper?

Thanks for having the empathy for understanding where I'm coming from.

BTW, I'm a musician, which isn't dissimilar to what you hoopers are doing. If you were to ask me which pianist I'd most like to see, I wouldn't be offended nor would I base my answer on chops. Some of the classical people have the best skills, but I'd be more interested in seeing Oscar Peterson or Chick Corea. Don't get me wrong, OP and CC have phenomenal skills themselves, but I'd want to see them due to the combination of musicianship, improvisational genius and style of music they play.

That doesn't necessarily make those guys "the best" (I phrased my query in this thread badly - should have used different wording). Such things are very subjective. They're just the guys I'd most like to see.

So what hooper would you most like to see? Anyone in the world. Is it really that bad a thing?

wow! Alot of energy in this thread!! I think it is a sensitive subject because in the grand scheme of things hoop dancing (as we do it) is still relatively new and undefined. like a baby or a new flower it still feels like something to be protected and defended. Plus this group is a group of hoopers not people who like to watch hooping so I think it is an uncomfortable question to answer because we risk pissing our friends off by not saying that they are our favorite(maybe)! anyway.. maybe best to post this question(if your nopt totally exasperated by now) to a larger demographic group like the burning man group or something like that..
            I hope this helps..

not to beat a dead horse.. but I just thought of another good analogy.. This question (posed to those on this list ) is like sitting down a large group of brothers and sisters and asking who they like the best ( yes, alot of us really do take hooping that personally)..

              more than my two cents~

                I agree with Anah.
When I first read, I thought whataf..k. But I see his point because even if I enjoy hooping and I enjoy watching everybody, there are some styles that I prefer better than others. For example, there are people that do more tricks and people that dance more.
Just preference. I've seen many of us making comments about preferences but yes, we are not here to define who's the best or favorite and I don't think he meant that.

to elaborate on what anah said-- the community is still pretty small and also pretty tightknit. everyone knows everyone, at least to some extent.

this brings up something else though: i'd love to know where to see cirque de soleil class hoopers. which cirque show are they in? where else do they perform? i've never seen hooping by anyone outside of the underground scene, but i'd love to...

I saw a male hooper last year at Teatro Zinzani that circus dinner theater show on the Embarcadero in San Francisco. He was an awesome hooper. His main trick was hooping about 10 hoops at one time on different parts of his body. I'm not saying he is my favorite, just a "professional circus performer type."

I'm pretty new to hooping. But I really must conquer with some of what has been said already here about style. I am attracted to watching various people hoop for different reasons. Alot has to do more with "performance style" than actual technical proficiency.

I saw a live performance of Quidam last year that had a contortion hooper, she might be new as I don't remember seeing her on the Quidam video.

ageed. i had a conversation with a dude last night who told me he had never heard of hooping before (not a shock) but why would he do it b/c he has a nice ass already. i was like "wtf?" i said, you don't have to have a nice ass to hoop. and he said "isn't that the whole point?"

          i said "ughhhh noooooooooooooooooooooooooo."

turned out he was a big tool but i was so caught off guard by the "only hot people with good bodies should be seen hooping" attituded. especially since he hadn't even heard of it prior to our conversation.

so thank you, elana. "people who dont hoop dont really understand what its about." that is good advice to remember!

I'm also very new to hooping. A friend asked if I was intersted in a workshop, and I went not even knowing if I could hoop anymore. To my delight, I could, and I hooped for hours that day. I just couldn't get enough.

To the point of this thread. To me, watching hooper, dancers, spinners who are better than me is very inspirational. I've been in dance groups where it's all about competition, and no one wanting to help anyone else it in fears of that person being better. What I have found from the poi/hoop people I've come in contact with, is that it is about being inspired, and I just love that. I took myself out of an environment before because it was just backstabbing and bitching constantly.

I think it has to do with the fact that Anah said. It's still a pretty small group compared to "other kind of dances".
please don't get mad at me but
I haven't seen backstabbing or bitching yet but some kinda of competition, yes I've seen.

we all have our unique style and personality that we bring to our hoopdance...which makes the dance so beautiful and inspiring to watch, and like any sport or musical instrument the more we practice the better we get.
I remember last year at Burning man there was a day in the center camp where hoopers were whirling it up...which was sooo cool to see all the talent, styles and tricks....but i remember feeling like it was that Zoolander movie where there was an edge of showing off like it was a competition which was exciting and humorous. But i believe we all feel that hooping is a wonderful outlet of self-expression and a great way to release blocked energy, tension and dance, exercise and play! With that in mind, i think that we mostly feel like we want to spread this joy and share how uplifting and fun it is with others...rather than compete.
When it comes to cirque du soleil....that's a whole other world of hoop performance art...these people train for hours and hours every day and for years!!! So amazing to see what they can do, but it doesn't seem like the same sort of hooping we have all come to love and share...but still inspiring to watch and we can apply bits and pieces of what they do to our hoop dance but really its in a league of its own. I have seen the hoop girl at Zumanity and thought it was amazing too, but dont recall that she integrated any dance elements. There was also a great hoop guy on Ingenuie (an earlier cirque de soleil), very cool and yeah on Quiddam the cortitionist which was some craaaazy hooping...that i know i will never be able to do.

anyways...i think its great that this subject came up because as much as we like to think we are above the conditioned mind of competitiveness...its naturally in all of us to some degree...and so perhaps in knowing this we can remember that we are all inspired by the hula hoop and embrace each others uniqueness and humanness and of course keep hooping it up!

        love and light~

i think a lot of us might take this question really personally. i do, for example, because i've been practicing very regularly with the bay area hoopers and all over the place for a couple of years now, and i'm still not very "good" - at least, if an "outsider" where to watch us practice, they'd notice that a lot of other people are way "better" at it than i am as far as tricks and stuff are concerned. this is because i'm not very coordinated, and most of the time all i can do is dance around while hooping. i can do very few tricks because i end up with black eyes ;)

however, i still do it and i still enjoy it and i still love it and i try not to compare myself to my other hooping friends. however, we are all competitive by nature to some extent, and while i think we'd all like to say we don't really "compare" eachother in a negative way, i think we all wish we were a little "better", which is why we practice.

so - to ask who is the best is more than a little inflammatory. however, on the other hand, don't we all have an idea about who we think is the best hooper we've ever seen?

why are you on this tribe, stainless, if you're not a hooper? or are you becoming one?

      > however, on the other hand, don't we all have an idea about who we think is the best hooper we've ever seen? <

well duh :) we're just being polite this week :)

one point that i like to make to people who i'm introducing to hooping is that there are several different types of hooping. (well, more like *dozens* of different types, really.) i have favorite hoopers in several different categories. i have friends who blow me away with the intricate skill level of their tricks; then folks who are so strong and athletic that they can pull off crazy super-human stunts that the rest of us can't even comprehend; and the lovelies who hoopdance with incredible fluidity... i've had dozens of conversations with people who watch us BAH folks hoop, and each observer has a different favorite, depending on what they value in performance. it's great, cuz it allows us all a bit of a niche in the scene.

k, i need to stop musing with my keyboard and get my ass out to dolores park :) hope to see some of you there!

i will second that with massive scoops of enthusiasm. i just got to play with malcolm for the first time, and i was absolutely floored. his style is similar to anah's and karis's, but he's taller and slightly more masculine. and his isolation work... mmm...

          **************
and on that note, as long as we are technically on a thread about good hoopers, i'd like to give a shout-out... (though i am not in any way handing out superlatives here ;P )

having just been fortunate enough to catch them all performing and then getting to play with a few of them, i'd like to remind everyone that groovehoops is good hoopin yumsauce wow-ness.

groovehoops is a group of hoopkidz in nyc who do choreographed and freestyle performance. at the moment the group is composed of 4 boys and 1 girl (stefan, malcolm, wheylan, brent, ashley), and they're all *fanTAStic* hoopers and performers. i do suggest you check them out when you get the chance. YUM.

Hooping is about cooperation, cycles, and being one with the revolution of all creation...
In 9 months on this tribe, and on the HHHHU tribe, I can honestly say everyone I have seen post has had that three-fold spirit of hooping.
Now having said that AND read the competitive hooping post, I can honestly say without hesitation...

The best hooper in the world is yourself. Once your energy merges with the power of the circle that you have stepped into, it becomes one with positivity and therefore you will inspire others toward it. They too will inspire others as they grow and are nutured by this powerful energy. Within this spiraling outward vortex of positivity and endless creativity your individual input dissolves and merges. You are the best hooper in the world.

Though I understand the spirit in which you asked your questions, the more I research, the more tight knit I realize the hoop comunity is (including all levels of expertise).
I like that everyone in this tribe is so appreciative , supportive, inclusive, & non-competitive.
I think those qualities make this tribe one of the best!
Because of that asking us to rate other hoopers feels inapropriate, it is safe to assume that anyone in Cirque has practiced, trained & therefore has skills.
What kind of rating are you looking for?
I'd say any trick where you are hanging from a cable, is a trick that rates at a very high level of difficulty.

If you are new to hooping & looking for some good examples pro or otherwise, just ask that. We all have favorites, but who could really pick one that is best?

Even my favorite to watch is fluid as water.

I think it's important to note that this original post was from 2005. It had died and I was glad to see it go. "Best" has such an air of competition. And even my favorite to watch can change with the song, my mood, the dancer's day, and a million other variables.

I know the bait is really old but I'll bite this thread...

people i LOVE to watch hoop, "not because they perticularly love it but because their style and ability makes me go "ooo")

    Anah
    Stephan
    Malcom
    Karis
    Pause (she's in philly now)
    KC
blueberry (her circus mutant style is intreaguing)
    spiral
the performers in: Corteo (hooping on a highwire), Quidam (contortion hooping), zumanity (contortion/strip hooping)
The rythmic gymnasts who use the hoop
The guys who work with smaller hoop and isolation illusions.
the "hot russian chick" hooping video (I wish I knew who that was)

I don't think admitting that when those people are arround, I WILL stare. Those are people who are doing something with the hoop that especially piques my intrest. I'm sure every hooper is beautiful, amazing, special, etc... but you know that when looking at video threads, if you see one started by a perticular person you'll feel that giddy feeling in your belly going "I wonder what they're doing now!"

      Love that HOT Russian chick!

But my favorite Hooper is the one that come up to me while I'm hooping and whispers in my ear, "Try this" and walks away! Then checks in 20 mins later to feed me another piece of advice!
So that would make him Astro! My fav hooper!
