This weekend my boyfriend Doug and I went to a concert held in the amphitheatre of the Breaks Interstate Park. This was the first time we had decided to hoop at a live show. Just to set the record straight, Doug supposedly hoops "just to please his girlfriend." When we arrived at the show, we commenced to hooping in the back behind the crowd. I was getting into the groove when Doug's friend came up to me and said, "Check out your boy!" As I followed the direction his finger was pointing, I realized that Doug had taken off into the crowd and ended up right beside the stage in front of the entire crowd. He was hooping his butt off!! My jaw practically dropped to the ground. To my amazement, my shy, low-key, non-hooping boyfriend was stealing the show. LOL!! The crowd was cheering for him. He whipped out moves I'd never seen him do and was smiling from ear to ear. After a few minutes of me standing in the back with my hoops, a few people in the crowd began to coax me into joining him. After a little self-talk, I convinced my otherwise shy self into doing it. We ended up hooping down there the whole time! Many people from the crowd came down and hooped with us (people of all ages) and at the end of the show, the band thanked us for hooping. :) I don't believe I've ever sweated so intensely in my life. Toward the end, the hoop began to lose grip from all the sweat and fly off my body. It was an amazing night that I'll cherish for a long time--the night that my boyfriend morphed from a hesitant, cynical hooper into an absolute showstopper. I can't believe he finally realized just how much fun hooping really is.

Re: My BF loves hooping?!
Mon, July 14, 2008 - 7:50 PMYay! That makes me so happy! Hooping is a great thing to have in common. Next you two will be doing partner moves! At The Hoop Convergence, the Boston Hoop Troupe did a whole workshop on partner hooping. You would not believe all the moves two people can do together. Maybe you can get him to come with you to the Convergence next year! -

Re: My BF loves hooping?!
Mon, July 14, 2008 - 9:43 PMomg what an awesome story...I just love picturing the whole thing! It sounds like you guys really bonded too...that is wonderful.
my boyfriend is so supportive of my hooping but until recently really had no interest in doing it. Every time I would try to teach him he would get super embarrassed and just not want to do it. He is not a good dancer or anything and I was a dancer growing up so he is insecure about it...but he finally admitted that he really wanted a hoop (none of mine are big enough for him to really learn) so that he could learn the basics on his own and then I could show him more. I told him I wanted to teach him the basics because it would be so much easier (plus it's good practice for my upcoming teacher's training), but he just wasn't having it...he said he just needed to do it on his own for now...I at first was all hurt, but quickly got over that since I am so excited he has any interest in it at all...i mean this is a business-like guy who is super quiet and reserved and really has not much natural rhythm (we are totally like Dharma and Greg by the way)...so the fact that he wanted his own hoop and stuff...I was all for it.
so i just made him one last week and although he hasn't had any time to use it yet, I know he is excited. I don't think he would ever get anywhere near what your boyfriend busted out this weekend, but it is inspiring to hear...maybe my guy will find another side of him in the hoop! But even if he doesn't, it feels nice for him to want to experience something that he knows has changed my life so much and made me a happier person!
Yay for awesome boyfriends! This reminded me how grateful I am for mine...thanks! -

Mon, July 14, 2008 - 10:00 PMMy gf at the time me into hooping about a year ago. I loved hooping with her and trading ideas. Also filming her was really awesome. I was a closet hooper for a while but after our split I really put it down for a bit. But in the last few months I just went for it. I am having so much fun. -

Re: My BF loves hooping?!
Tue, July 15, 2008 - 1:14 AMWonton, that's AWESOME! Now he understands why you love hooping!
I have a similar but definitely more low key story with my boyfriend. When I started hooping, he had absolutely no interest in it at all. i asked him if he wanted to try and he did what I see a lot of people do: he wound the hoop up, gave it a big push, didn't move a muscle, and let the hoop fall to the ground, concluding with, "See? I can't hoop." I started explaining that the hoop doesn't magically levitate around your body and that you do have to stay in motion, but he didn't want to scrape any of the tape off my brand new hoop by trying again. He handed my hoop back to me, and that was the end of that.
He was always very supportive of my hooping though. He has encouraged me from the very beginning, even when we couldn't really afford it, because he saw how happy it made me. Sometimes when the weather was nice outside, he would send me text messages saying, "It's supposed to be nice tonight, so you should hoop at the park after work." Sometimes he came to the park with me on the weekends to hang out while I hooped.
Then one day, out of the clear blue, he decided he wanted to give it a try. This was over a year after I started hooping and he had shown NO interest whatsoever in hooping until then. We made a special hoop just for him in the colors that he wanted, and we taped it up together (I did the pain in the ass 2" gaffer tape and he did the easier to handle accent tape). After that, we started hooping together at the park once a week. He had no interest in learning crazy tricks. He just wanted to work on the basics. Of course, he can knee hoop no problem. When I told him how hard it is to knee hoop, he told me he was a hooping prodigy and that he would be joining the All Stars in two weeks. We had to take a break when the weather got cold, and we've been too busy to make it to the park this summer, but just knowing that he wants to do it was enough of a surprise for me! -

Re: My BF loves hooping?!
Tue, July 15, 2008 - 2:08 PMA little off the main topic, but WHY do people do that?! I know so many people who will walk up to a hoop and try to HURL it into a circle around their bodies. Sorry, the laws of friction, gravity, and perpetual motion (or lack thereof) apply to you too!
I wonder what the perceptual difference is, though, between, say, children who understand the way the hoop sort of needs to be in contact with you when you push it to start, and those children who don't...is it inborn or practice? Hm.

Re: My BF loves hooping?!
Tue, July 15, 2008 - 8:19 AMI love hooping with my boyfriend. It is so much fun to share that with someone... especially when you're practicing and messing up together, it makes it so much easier to laugh at yourself when your honeybun is right there with you. Jeremiah and I enjoy "facehooping" together (when you mess up a duckout and the hoop rolls across your face). -

Tue, July 15, 2008 - 9:00 AMmy guy likes to hoop too... guys usually pick it up faster than girls. my man says its the "thrusting motion." hahaha. -

Re: My BF loves hooping?!
Tue, July 15, 2008 - 9:13 AMI made some 28" hoops for arm fun that turned into a party toy one evening. For the boys to try it out I explained (since there are also bunnies there) that it's easiest to 'pretend you're a boy bunny behind a girl bunny'. That seemed to create enough speed to keep it hooping.
My boyfriend helps me come up with ideas and his encouragement is just what I need when the trick I'm working on isn't catching. He also tends to pick up one of the many hoops that are laying around the house and/or yard and spin for a bit. :) -

Re: My BF loves hooping?!
Tue, July 15, 2008 - 9:42 AMAwww....this is so fun.....
My boyfriend has been picking up the hoop more and more frequently lately, the other day at a friend's house I had only taken one hoop with me and boy, what a chore to get the hoop from him so I could hoop ;-)
Now, I am hoping he will start to do a little more than just waist hooping ;-) It sure is cute tho!

Re: My BF loves hooping?!
Wed, July 16, 2008 - 10:04 AMThe first hoop I bought was a hoopnotica hoop. I somehow found their page during a random web crawl, and their video had me instantly wanting to try it. I bought a hoop for myself and one for my Mom, since her birthday was coming up. When I told my boyfriend, he said the most surprising thing I think has ever come out of his mouth... "You didn't get me one?"
When the two hoops came, we popped the DVD in and gave it a try, and we've been doing it together ever since. Some things I'm better at, somethings he's better at, and it's been really interesting and surprising to see which is which. I totally agree with everyone here, who has said it's so much fun to have someone to learn with. And also that guys, once they try it, seem to get hooked really easily. :-)
I so hate that we didn't start hooping until right after the hoop convergence. I would have loved to see the partner hooping stuff. I don't think I've ever even seen a good partner hooping video. Anybody know of any up at youtube? -

Re: My BF loves hooping?!
Thu, July 17, 2008 - 3:04 AMHehe Jeremiah and I do "partner hooping"... though it is of the most ridiculous nature... I sit on his shoulders and while he knee hoops, I either shoulder hoop or do beam me ups around both of us. I giggle uncontrollably every time. -

Re: My BF loves hooping?!
Thu, July 17, 2008 - 5:45 AMWow! That's one heck of a move. There would have to be a lot of trust in a relationship for that one to work. I'd like to see ya'll do that one.

Re: My BF loves hooping?!
Wed, July 16, 2008 - 11:35 AMDoug says he wants to try to do corkscrews and when the hoop twirls up above his head, he wants me to roll into him and treansfer the hoop to where it twirls back down around me into corkscrews. I thought it was a cool idea. Can it be done? -

Re: My BF loves hooping?!
Wed, July 16, 2008 - 12:46 PMI've had my students do a partner exercise where one person swings the hoop overhead in wildwest/halo and then the second person comes in next to them and "steals" the hoop by transferring hands, so I think that this corkscrew idea your boyfriend has is doable. Just practice it one step at a time. First just get the timing of you taking the hoop from him. Then have him practice how to get out of the hoop (you should try different positions with you in front, him in front, or the two of you back to back). Once you have that down, go for the corkscrew! -
