Probably shoulda asked before the MRI.... Back to the ortho with the films on Tuesday. He's never heard of hooping.
1. I mostly dance on a grass and gravel parking lot, and until last week, I wore sneakers.
2. My dance style includes a LOT of turning.
3. Had post-injury persistent pain on both knees at the adductor attachments--inside lower knee, both legs. Thought it was injury-related, but maybe not--the injuries were roughly at the same time I started hooping, and one WAS hoop-related (got dizzy and fell flat over).
4. LOTS of soft-tissue work--NMT and Rolfing--which helped for a day to a week, and then the pain came back.
Got talked into going to the doctor, and it was in between the first visit and the actual MRI that I thought maybe my problem was too much torque on my knees, so I switched to dancing in old bowling shoes. Between the (very good) painkillers the MD wrote and not much time, I can't say I've seen any improvement.
Had the MRI yesterday and I can't tell anything from the films, except that if that's all the padding I have between my major bones, I'm for sure not going to worry about why I don't try any of the jumps I've seen other people do.
Anybody have anything to add? At last visit, it seemed that he was sure I needed ligament repair = surgery, and was only ordering the MRI to convince me. Not opposed if it's needed, and well-insured although I'd still not rather have to cough up the deductible.

Re: Knee pain?
Fri, May 26, 2006 - 11:19 AMFor diagnosis, get someone to videotape you while hooping, with a focus on your knees... if you are rotating with bad angles happening at knee-level, instead of keeping your feet and knees aligned and rotating at hip/torso to follow through where the feet and knees lead as a unit.. you may be doing bad things :)
I do all sorts of bad things to my knees, primarily the eggbeater kick while playing waterpolo... defintely something that I'm working on.. not by stopping my enjoyment of the game, but by doing lots more warmup of my knees before I start jumping out of the water, or drowning the big guys... and I started paying attention to the way I turn while hooping, after seeing a video of myself and realizing that I go totally pigeon-toed through my turns, wh ich is NOT good for the knees.. since seeing that, I've worked on getting a bit more dance-y through the turns, more skippy steps instead of a plant-and-twist motion, and it is feeling better.
Good luck!
X.

Re: Knee pain?
Fri, May 26, 2006 - 3:39 PMI don't know how to help you, but I wanted to offer knee-pain hooping support. My left knee is completely busted from a bone tumor and only bends 90 deg. Recently I've been having a lot more pain too, and just had a series of X-ray, CT and MRI to determine if my tumor is back or if a screw is causing bad things. I never have pain WHILE hooping though...
I wish you luck...
