Okay, I'm going to take the plunge and try my hand at making my own hoop. I'd love to know what type of tapes those hoop makers out there prefer ... gaffer, electrical, vinyl? I'm mainly talking about the base decoration, I plan to add some metalic tape for prettiness but I am not sure what the basic hoop should be covered in. Gaffer is textured which sounds good to me but it is rather expensive. I assume you wouldn't have to cover the whole thing in it just enough to give it some grip. Yes?
The hoop I have at the moment, from what I can tell, is an electrical/vinyl two color base covered with a 45 degree angle metalic tape which is then striped witha textured tape (I assume gaffer). I like it lots. Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Leah

Re: Which tape for a hoop
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 6:30 PMGaffers is the grippiest. Each tape has it's own good qualities though. Electical holds up in moist conditions but it's slippery, especially when it's wet. Still, it won't come off. Gaffer's doesn't like moisture but it's the most grippy under most conditions. Metallic tapes are pretty but have sharp edges that must be covered or they will cut you as they start to tear. If you use metallic, put it down first and then cover the edges with either gaffers or electrical. Hockey tape is also grippy and holds up pretty good in moisture. It's just heavier.
If you look in the header of this tribe, you'll see links to many threads discussing all of these and even some videos on how to do it.
Hope this helps! Good luck. You'll do great, no matter what you decide. It's all part of the learning process.
