hoopers at Burning Man...

topic posted Sat, July 12, 2008 - 7:43 PM by  jennaluna
hey all~

So i was just getting curious to see which of you glorious hoopers will be at Burning Man this year and what kind of camps and events there will be. I have been to Burning Man twice before, but never as a hooper (although I did pick up my first hoop at last year's Burning Man...yay).

I am struggling with the ability to go right now, (financial and scheduling reasons) but really want to because of the hooping aspect and possibility of meeting a lot of you, etc. So I guess I was sort of wanting to get an idea of what will be going on so I can decided for sure whether it would be worth it for me to go...not that Burning Man isn't always worth it, but I am starting Berkeley that week and can only go very late Thursday to very early Monday or even late Sunday...so it really has to be worth it for me to justify the $$$ and time and stress.

So let us all know who will be there, if you are going to have a theme camp based on hooping, and/or if you have an event planned!

I'll be going this year! This will be my third year and also my first year as a hooper. I'll be bringing my fire and LED hoop, so I am really excited about that. I don't know where we will be camped yet because they haven't assigned spots to theme camps just yet, but I'll be with a fire camp call Suckie Fuckaye!

I'll be at Burning Man. All year I'd been saying I wasn't going, but then a couple nights ago I decided to go and I bought my ticket on Friday. Not sure of any hoop jams yet, although I'm sure they will happen. This year is my first year in a while where I have no commitments or projects so my plan is to hoop daily in center camp. That's the only part of my burn I'm sure of. I will be at HoopCamp too.

I'll be going to Burning Man this year for the first time, and will definitely bring hoops! I'm working on making a collapsible fire hoop now, and since I can't afford an LED hoop and haven't gotten the hang of making them yet, I'm just going to bring a normal collapsible hoop and strap a bunch of glow sticks to it at night :)
    Wooo I'm excited!

I'll be making the trek!!! Camping in Hushville which I think will be close enough to hoop camp that I can float on over. Like the idea of not having a generator outside my tent - ah precious sleep.
Wondering tho' (might be another thread) what people with LED/PSIhoops are doing about recharging? Anyone know of any solar chargers that would work with them? Last years theme "Green Man" provided a couple of solar recharging stations but I don't know if that "service" will be available again.
First year I watched and hooped. This year, I'm in the Fire Conclave with the SolarFlare/HooppaiN peeps! What a thrill! What a honor!

    I'll be there.
I camp with the Golden Cafe... we have live music all day... perhaps we can jam there one afternoon?

I'll be there!!! i camp at Big Puffy Yellow and we have a 4:20 party on Thursday, it would be a great chance for everyone to meet up and hoop jam! What do y'all think, were a big camp so there should be plenty of room and lots of groovin beats!!

I too will be attending Burning Man! I just order my PSI hoop and it will be here in time for the burn this year! So stoked!!! I will be camping with Oobleck Village (a conglomerate of multiple camps) and we'll be hosting a bar, with music and a number of interactive art instillations.

I'm so glad someone posted about BM in this tribe - I have a question that involves both hoops and burning man, but couldn't decide which tribe would be best for my question. Here goes:

So, I'm gifting hoops on the playa this year. I've been working on this project for the last 3 months and have been making great head way. I plan on bringing about 50 hoops - right now, I have about 30 completed and am on target for my goal. They are beautiful and super shiny. I'm really excited to bring these with me as gifts so I can spread my love of hooping with people while there. My question is this, do you think I should include some sort of care instructions/hoop info with the hoops I give? I was thinking of making a small card and securing it to the hoops using gold elastic bands. On the card i would have basic care information (i.e. don't leave them sitting in a hot car, storage hints, cleaning hints) and websites where people can learn more about hooping (i.e. hooping.org, hooping tribe, youtube.) My main concern with doing this is the moop potential. I don't want the cards to go flying around creating more moop. Also, I don't know if people will even find them useful. Would you have found an info card useful when you bought/received your first hoop?

I've been debating this for a while, but the time is drawing near, so some input would be most welcomed! Let me know if you think this is a good idea or just overkill and also, if you have any important tips you think might be useful, please forward them so I can include them on the cards.

Thanks guy! I'm excited for some feedback!

gosh, i think cards would be so great, but the first reaction I had was moop too. But maybe when you gift the hoop you could ask them if they want a card (some may know a little about hooping already and don't really need one)...then you could just hand it to them, hoping they put it in a bag or something?

      Tue, July 15, 2008 - 3:22 AM
is there any way you could put the care instructions online, even if it's just posting a photo of the care card on flickr? then take a sharpie and write the web address on the inside of the hoop, so when people get their hoops home they can type in the address and find the care instructions...?

Both really great suggestions, Jennaluna and Jennifer. Thanks! I will ponder both and see what I come up with.....I'll let you know how it turns out after the burn!

      Wendy,
Wholey Crapoley! Thats an awesome idea, how on earth are you getting 50 hoops out to the Playa?!?! You must be driving?
I'm flying in, and rushing to make a collapsible fire hoop!

Thanks so much! I'm so excited about it i could burst! Its sort of taken over my life (and my apartment!!!!) We are driving and taking a huge u-haul, so I'm pretty set on transporting them (we're part of a village). But if you need a shiny hoop to play with while you're there (other than the fire hoop, that is - which is pretty shiny!), come by our camp - you could always gift it before going home!

      I'll be there, too!
Camping with The Philadelphia Experiment (PEX), of course!
If you like hooping to house music, PEX is the best spot.

We camped behind PEX last year, on the other side of the A street, and it was the best music on the playa by far! Really looking forward to hooping there...with my new psihoop!

Gosh, sorry to so openly be a jerque... Of course I am equally stoked to see my hoop sisters Mari, Aryam, and Jen again, and so utterly freaking stoked to meet my cyber-friend Lucian, as well as every single one of you! Here's to many playa hooping events! All hoopers: make sure you come by Hoop Heaven and say hey--we'll post later with our location!

Aw... I'm taking this year off (theme didn't really speak to me so much, though I had booked the time off work just in case it started shouting...).. but my b/f and I are heading to Japan for those two weeks at the end of the summer! While y'all are dry and dusty, I'll be sweating like a pig and working on my Japanese phrases! Have a good dust storm for me :)

Re: gifting hoops on the playa and getting care info to peeps ... I'd suggest that you try to make time to make every hoop-gifting personal, and take a few minutes to chat with the person and talk about hooping care and online resources and off-playa community. I found my first year out there quite lonely and had a hard time overcoming my shyness, so I really appreciated people who gifted me with their time and conversation, along with (or without) thoughtful items that they had made or chosen to buy to gift on the playa.

One of my fav moments of gifting last year was hooping with a gentleman at the Deep End... I had hauled out some of my massive, heavy hoops to the playa, having a feeling that someone was waiting for one... and sure enough, I was helping some people try out the hoops and for this man, it was the first time he'd been able to get a hoop moving, ever, even trying a lot of the other adult-sized hoops that had been offered... my 1-1/2", 200psi+, 50inch diameter hoop did it for him! I warned him about the bruising potential of the beast, but he was in love :)

Have an awesome time, everyone! Take care of yourselves and each other, and I'll see you out there next year!

          X.

Hey All, appreciate the input and thrilled to hear that so many of you coming this year. I look forward to playing with you on the playa. I'm staying at Celestial Bodies camp, which we expect to be located in Avalon Village this year. Come by our lounge bar for a fab Playa Cosmo; vodka, gatorade with a splash of cran - we consider it a playa health drink - and it's yummie. We could also host a hoop session if there's interest. We'll have a CD / iPod compatible sound system.

I first picked up a hoop at BM 3 years ago for a 3 minute spin but then never persued it again until last year. So happy to be in the hoop'n community. You're awesome. Thanks for including this old man.
    Cheers, --s--

ohmygodohmygodohmygod!!!! I'm getting even more excited now! Only 40 days until the Playa is ours!

Thanks for the love, Ann, Xta and Emily! I'm pretty excited about my project. I definitely hope to make each hoop I gift a personal experience. With all the time, effort and love that I’ve put into each one, I worry that the person receiving it won’t be able to get me to shut up about hooping, how much I love it, why they should love it too, and where they can get more info on it! I don’t want to overwhelm them, so I though something they could take with them as a reminder would be helpful. I like the idea of the website link sharpied onto the hoop actually (or taped with a piece of paper) - then no moop and if they are interested, they could check it out at their leisure post-playa.

Hope to see you all soon!!!!

Eesh! Good luck, Jennaluna! Sound like you have a lot on your plate. Don't worry about making a bunch of hoops - I know they're fun to make and give, but getting yourself there is paramount! Hope everything works out!

I'm not going to Burning Man this year. I'm taking a year off after many years on the playa.

On a related note, last year I coordianted the hoop jam at center camp and I've gotten emails from them recently about center camp activities. Since I'm not going to be going this year, I don't really feel right about setting things up for something I won't even be it. If someone wants to take on organizing some kind of hoop jam at center camp, email me at philo@hooping.org and I'll forward the emails to you. Last year for those that weren't there I was able to get us a half an hour in the center area of center camp at a rare time when there wasn't any music playing and we were a welcome distraction while they changed the stage. That's the kind of thing I imagine they'd be willing to try and set up again. Whoever is taking it on should probably know that you'd be responsible for 30 minutes of providing 30 minutes of great hooping music that is completely unlicensed - which was a challenge. But yeah, let me know...

All right now--I don't mean to speak out of turn, but... but what if we had...what if we had a PEX HOOP GATHERING on the playa!?!? Would that not be THE bizzomb?!? Not that I'm trying to put anything on anybody! I just know that, like everyone else, I enjoyed the PEX dj mixes more than any other music last year--so fresh and hoopable. We might could just meet there one night at sunset...

Xta, Philo--we will miss you both a lot.

That sounds like an amazing idea, Ann.
Well, PEX DJs do love hoopers! I think that every DJ needs a hooper. hehe

Let me talk to my lovely Pexies to know what day is good for us to get together. It's just that we have some amazing performances at camp this year.
