that "Beam me Up" trick

topic posted Wed, May 17, 2006 - 9:51 AM by  ~WhiMsY~
I just can't get it. I've watched the videos and you all make it look so easy! I just want to get the hoop down and back up over my head again in one smooth motion. I get it down, pass it to my right hand behind my back, and the hoop goes all askew and loses it's momentum. Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong, or a better way to do this cool looking trick?

Thanks in advance for any help!

The way I teach the 'Beam me Up' second hand in my class is:
Have your second hand waiting behind your back for the hoop,
when the hoop lands on that 2nd hand, make a loose loop with your index finger and your thumb (do not GRIP the hoop).
Then bring your 2nd had above your head.
By keeping your loop loose you will allow the hoop to continue its spin (Stay level) while your hand position changes, you are just guiding the hoop my grabbing it.
Then you can connect your 2 hands up top as well.
    Good Luck hope that helps!

The key to this trick is to keep your hand as close to your body as possible on the up swing.
You want to let the back of your right hand almost graze your body diagonally (from your right hip to your left ear). This way, you're mimicking the natural rotation of the hoop, which generally rotates around one center point at all times. If you let your right arm swing away from your body during this motion, the hoop's center of gravity will be lost and it will just hit you in the back.
Also, as always, remeber to turn in the direction of the hoop so that you have more time to perform the trick.
      Good luck!

Me too! This was the first time I actually felt the hoop orbiting around me with ME just being the giude. It makes such a difference... I know what feeling to look for now...

I too would like to see the video of that trick. Is it on line or do I need to purchase a DVD? I'm a new hooper. I'd be interested in seeing some good video clips of different moves on line, also, can you recommend any good DVD's to purchase? Thanks.

HI Peaches. Click on the links to get to christahoops.com then visit the Images page to see the links to all of my online (free!) video clips.

There is also another tribe called Hooping Videos, which is nothing but video clips!

If you search for "hoop DVDs" in the "search this tribe" box from the main Hula Hooping page, you'll find discussion threads talking about the various professional videos out there for purchase.

Thanks for posting the question, Hadria, and for the responses, everyone. This one has been frustrating me to no end, not to mention seriously tweaking my wrist. Learning to grab the hoop without really grabbing it is so important, isn't it?

Cass, thanks for the kudos.. that was really neat to hear that someone is making use of those clips - I was wondering if anyone did!

To break down this skill, I would recommend doing a lot of right-hand only work: lift from behind the back, drop back down in front, let it spin a few times to rebuild momentum... repeat a few times, then add turning yourself counterclockwise...oh, a quick note that in my version, I do the hand-change down at my left side, not up in front like many others do, AND, when I'm going really fast, I don't even use my left hand, just kinda stick my left forearm out to push against the hoop as I swing it around to where my right hand is waiting behind my back.

      Good luck!

Thanks Xta for the info :) I haven't tried moving counter-clockwise yet while lifting the hoop from behind. I'm going to try and get that motion down. I think someone else mentioned that too.

And also, your clips are great! I've been watching those clips for weeks now. I think more people use them than you realize! That elbow roll.. whew. That is hot looking. I tried it and failed miserably. Hit myself in the head nice and good too LOL

Woohoo :) Thanks, folks! I still miss the Burning Man video that used to be up on MysteryMoon's site (link from hooping.org doesn't seem to work anymore...) .. that was one of my big learning tools...

I'm going to take my nifty new digital camera to the pool today and do some taping before waterpolo practice tonight (if I can still move after my third shift of hooping at the Childrens Festival this morning...) .. with the idea of setting up a chalkboard, spending a bit of time trying to list EVERYTHING that I know how to do, and then taping it all... and then borrow the roomie's Mac do edit the video into smaller chunks.... but if I don't get it posted tonight, it won't happen til next week 'cause my weekend is crazy-busy teaching a lifeguard course..

I generally threaten that they won't pass unless they learn to hoop as well as the lifeguarding skills that are actually on the exam sheet :)

          So, more on the way...

i LURVE that video too... when i want to explain to people how cool hooping actually is i show them that one.

as for this trick, i hoop in the same direction as you are in your video but i bring the hoop down with my left hand and pass it to my right behind my back instead of passing form my right hand to my left on my front/side.
Both are possible, i just managed to learn the behind the back one first.

I also find it easier to turn the same direction your hooping as you do the move becasue it pauses momentum and give you a little more time to do it.

              Thank you so much, Stefan!!

I love that video! That's the video that inspired me to not give up when first started hooping and could do the tricks right. I wanted to be just like the great hoopers in that video...I'm still not that great, but I sure have fun doing it :-)

it saddens me that I haven't been able to get this movie to work! It only seems to load/save/play the first 30-some seconds, no matter how I try to save it. any hints? I'm starving to see it!!! :)

I can't get the vid to load either. I get 15 seconds of titles and then it just stays on the same frame even though the little counter thingie at the bottom moves along as if it were playing. sadness. Especially since I love groovehoop's other vids. oh well, I'll just have to imagine the beauty...

MUHAHAHAHAHA I got it :) It only took me an hour and a half and lots of bruises on my hands but totally worth it. Thanks all!! Turning counter clockwise totally helped, as did NOT gripping the hoop, and keeping my hand close to my body.

And I can't get that video to load either but I think it's my computer. I'm going to try watching it from work.. I want to see :)

Great advice! YES, the key is the finger loop - that helps tramendously. But ok, I have another question. I can grab it ok and lift it up above my head, but once it touches my hand the hoop looses momentum. How do you keep the momentum going while you're lifting it up?
    • Re: that "Beam me Up" trick

      Thu, February 1, 2007 - 6:23 PM
It's so funny to see this thread bumped all the way back up cause it seems like ages ago that I wrote this!! I've mastered this trick now, funny to think there was a time that I struggled with it.

Anyway, Nicki... what REALLY helped me learn this trick was to spin with the hoop when lifting it up. I think the momentum of your body spinning helps keep the hoop moving... or something like that. Not sure exactly, but it definitely helps! When you master this trick you won't need to spin anymore. Give it a shot :)

You also could try practicing this with a really big hoop.

      Good luck!!

Try adding a "snap" to the very top of your lift - if you're hooping counter-clockwise and lifting with your right hand from behind your back, snap the hoop up at "1:00", if you're hooping clockwise and lifting lefty, snap the hoop to "11:00" The extra energy put into the sharp snap translates into momentum to keep the hoop spinning away from you at the top of your lift, which helps it stay flatter as you are bringing it back down. Turning your body in the same direction that the hoop is spinning is also a lovely helper :)

@%%##@ I did get this......but all of a sudden - the hoop started flying out of my grip - all of yasterday - I snap - hoop flies - dammit - I hoop on my terrace - the hoop bounced off the sides and fell all the way down, 7 floors. Funny at first - but now I'm just fried.

I know you already got it, but for anyone else, What I did was learn the two parts of the trick seperate first. From over your head down to the waist with one hand. Just take it to your waist and let go and do some waist hooping. Then try from behind your back at waist level to over your head with the other hand. Make sure you have both of those down before trying to put them together.

Gosh, this is the one thing that still is tough for me. Sometimes I get it, sometimes I don't. Spinning and snapping definitely help, but there's something that has yet to click with me. I am working on posting some practice vids I have (they'll be in the hooping videos tribe shortly) - you can see clearly my trouble with this. :-) Teehe. Working with a low ceiling didn't help matters.

      Mon, February 5, 2007 - 6:54 PM
I agree - knowing how to do the two separate parts of the trick was key for me before being able to put them together successfully. Two other tidbits that might be helpful:

      (1) I didn't realize that you don't put the hoop back on your waist before bringing it back up. It might sound obvious, but it wasn't to me, so I would get it up over my head, bring it back down, let it rotate around my waist, and then lift it up again. I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong until someone said that the hoop goes from hand to hand. That was a real d'oh! moment for me! No wonder I couldn't get the two parts connected smoothly!

      (2) Once I figured out not to put the hoop back on my body, I was still bringing the hoop down to waist level and I would sometimes hit myself in the head on the way back up. I later learned that it was easier for me to bring the hoop down even lower, about mid-butt level, because that gave me more time to unwind my arm on the way back up.

      Hope that helps!

Oh my gosh, I am GOING to learn this trick, darn-it! Okay! Okay....I spin counterclockwise so when I lift the hoop up from waist hooping to initiate the "beam me up" trick - lifting from the back diagonally (going from left to right on the upswing) starting with my right hand to get it above my head, sometimes I can do it, but *a lot* of the time it ends up with my hand above my head straight up in the air holding on to the hoop on the right side, and the opposite side of the hoop (left) is still at my shoulder (hanging down diagonally) not above my head (horizontal to the ground). What am I doing wrong?!?!? I'm turning and snapping which seems to work at times, but most of the time I end up in the above situation with the hoop hanging down on the one side. There's something I'm missing. Hadria?....Xta?....anyone?....help!

i go from right to left on the upswing grabbing the hoop from behind with my right hand then i transfer it to my left to bring it down and grab it with my right hand making the little ring motion thingie...
    • Re: that "Beam me Up" trick

      Fri, February 9, 2007 - 11:22 PM
Mmm... sounds like you may actually be lifting faster than its spin momentum..? From the back diagonal lift, try sneaking your right hand under your armpit and complete the lift with your hand actually in front of your face before snapping up to the 2:00ish position...

.. but the other thing to realize is that the hoop may not be perfectly horizontal through this move... and that's okay. If the edge away from your grip swoops down a bit, then you'll just get this neato helix effect :)

Hope that helps... can you take a video so we can do a visual analysis? :)

      X.
  • Re: that "Beam me Up" trick

What worked for me: learn one part at a time. The first step is to learn to work the hoop off of your body in your hands, passing the hoop from hand to hand, just keeping it level in one location on your body (waist, for starters). It helps A LOT to turn slowly in the same direction as the hoop as you go; this slows down the hoop relative to your body and really makes it easier. Once you can do the hand pass and keep the hoop off your body, bringing it up and down is the next step.
