What worked for me: learn one part at a time. The first step is to learn to work the hoop off of your body in your hands, passing the hoop from hand to hand, just keeping it level in one location on your body (waist, for starters). It helps A LOT to turn slowly in the same direction as the hoop as you go; this slows down the hoop relative to your body and really makes it easier. Once you can do the hand pass and keep the hoop off your body, bringing it up and down is the next step.

From the back diagonal lift, try sneaking your right hand under your armpit and complete the lift with your hand actually in front of your face before snapping up to the 2:00ish position...

.. but the other thing to realize is that the hoop may not be perfectly horizontal through this move... and that's okay. If the edge away from your grip swoops down a bit, then you'll just get this neato helix effect :)

Hope that helps... can you take a video so we can do a visual analysis? :)

Oh my gosh, I am GOING to learn this trick, darn-it! Okay! Okay....I spin counterclockwise so when I lift the hoop up from waist hooping to initiate the "beam me up" trick - lifting from the back diagonally (going from left to right on the upswing) starting with my right hand to get it above my head, sometimes I can do it, but *a lot* of the time it ends up with my hand above my head straight up in the air holding on to the hoop on the right side, and the opposite side of the hoop (left) is still at my shoulder (hanging down diagonally) not above my head (horizontal to the ground). What am I doing wrong?!?!? I'm turning and snapping which seems to work at times, but most of the time I end up in the above situation with the hoop hanging down on the one side. There's something I'm missing. Hadria?....Xta?....anyone?....help!

I agree - knowing how to do the two separate parts of the trick was key for me before being able to put them together successfully. Two other tidbits that might be helpful:

(1) I didn't realize that you don't put the hoop back on your waist before bringing it back up. It might sound obvious, but it wasn't to me, so I would get it up over my head, bring it back down, let it rotate around my waist, and then lift it up again. I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong until someone said that the hoop goes from hand to hand. That was a real d'oh! moment for me! No wonder I couldn't get the two parts connected smoothly!

(2) Once I figured out not to put the hoop back on my body, I was still bringing the hoop down to waist level and I would sometimes hit myself in the head on the way back up. I later learned that it was easier for me to bring the hoop down even lower, about mid-butt level, because that gave me more time to unwind my arm on the way back up.

Hope that helps!

Bummer about the Burning man Vid - it's not us, it's them. I'm on T-1s at work and it just doesn't buffer all the way. I've learned a trick for watching movie trailers this way, if you pause it right at the beginning to let the little buffering bar load all the way first, then play it, it wont stop in the middle.

In this case, the video doesn't finish buffering the stream. They have to fix it on their end for us to see it.

as for this trick, i hoop in the same direction as you are in your video but i bring the hoop down with my left hand and pass it to my right behind my back instead of passing form my right hand to my left on my front/side.
Both are possible, i just managed to learn the behind the back one first.

I also find it easier to turn the same direction your hooping as you do the move becasue it pauses momentum and give you a little more time to do it.

Cass, thanks for the kudos.. that was really neat to hear that someone is making use of those clips - I was wondering if anyone did!

To break down this skill, I would recommend doing a lot of right-hand only work: lift from behind the back, drop back down in front, let it spin a few times to rebuild momentum... repeat a few times, then add turning yourself counterclockwise...oh, a quick note that in my version, I do the hand-change down at my left side, not up in front like many others do, AND, when I'm going really fast, I don't even use my left hand, just kinda stick my left forearm out to push against the hoop as I swing it around to where my right hand is waiting behind my back.

Good luck!

The key to this trick is to keep your hand as close to your body as possible on the up swing.
You want to let the back of your right hand almost graze your body diagonally (from your right hip to your left ear). This way, you're mimicking the natural rotation of the hoop, which generally rotates around one center point at all times. If you let your right arm swing away from your body during this motion, the hoop's center of gravity will be lost and it will just hit you in the back.
Also, as always, remeber to turn in the direction of the hoop so that you have more time to perform the trick.
Good luck!

The way I teach the 'Beam me Up' second hand in my class is:
Have your second hand waiting behind your back for the hoop,
when the hoop lands on that 2nd hand, make a loose loop with your index finger and your thumb (do not GRIP the hoop).
Then bring your 2nd had above your head.
By keeping your loop loose you will allow the hoop to continue its spin (Stay level) while your hand position changes, you are just guiding the hoop my grabbing it.
Then you can connect your 2 hands up top as well.
Good Luck hope that helps!
