So I was wondering what people use to decorate their hoops? So far I've used electrical tape in a rainbow of colors. I'm wondering about other things and also where I would be able to find UV reactive tape? Any thoughts or ideas??

Re: decorating your hoops!
Tue, April 27, 2004 - 10:00 AMI use gaffers tape.
It comes in an assortment of
colors including blacklight responsive ones.
It is widely used in the entertainment industry
to mark stage areas and tape things down like cables.
It doesn't leave a sticky residue like electrical tape.
Warning: it's expensive. It's been a while but I think I paid $14.00 for a 100 ft. roll.
I am looking for other tape suggestions too.

Re: decorating your hoops!
Fri, May 14, 2004 - 12:21 PMI use gaffer tape as well, but I got stuck in torrential rains and mud at a festival last weekend and now one of my favorite hoops is dirty and the tape is peeling.
How do you keep you hoops clean/dry?!

Re: decorating your hoops!
Tue, April 27, 2004 - 12:18 PMIf you live in the Los Angeles area, try going to the Studio Depot at 900 N. La Brea. The have the 1" and 1/2" cloth tape, which they call camera tape, as well as the 2", which they call gaffers tape. And in a variety of colors. Tell the sales person you are a hooper and you'll get a major discount (I got 40%). HUGE savings. They have a website www.studiodepot.com
Check it out. Maybe they'll give discounts for mail orders. You'd have to ask.
Happy hooping and decorating.

Re: decorating your hoops!
Fri, May 14, 2004 - 2:10 PMI'm not sure about cleaning and such but I thought I'd mention that if you buy good electrical tape (3M) it doesn't leave a sticky residue.. that was mentioned before so I thought I would clarify.. It's what I've been using and it's totally fine. From my electrical know-how friends, 3M is the only one (or one of a few) that doesn't leave a sticky residue :)

Fri, May 14, 2004 - 3:48 PMThese tapes are gorgeous! Does anyone know where one can go to buy tape like this live & in person in the SF Bay Area (so you can touch/feel/compare/juxtapose them?)? Thanks in advance for any leads! :) Divine Eye -

Tue, May 18, 2004 - 12:20 PMi've looked around & the best selection, although it's nothing like that web site, is pearl on market st. they have several metalic tapes to choose from. i think silver, copper, and one or two others. that website has a much better selection though.

Re: decorating your hoops!
Fri, May 14, 2004 - 4:33 PMi would have too say that in my experence my favorite is crome silver ducttape... its metalic silver & it reflects well in any lighting especilly black light...you can find it @any hardwear store...its about $10 to $15 (canadian$) i find i can cover two or three hoops completly with one roll...pure silver hoops give great effect...and are easy too keep clean...
...many blessings n happy hoopin!...

Re: decorating your hoops!
Tue, August 7, 2007 - 3:59 PMI tried that on the first hoop I made, and while I really liked the effect, the tape got really worn after only a few days. How do you keep yours from getting dull and scratched up?
-
Re: decorating your hoops!
Fri, June 13, 2008 - 9:11 AMI found the silver ducttape to be very hard to maneuver. I like the concept, but it tore alot while I was wrapping and puckers in a lot of places.

Decorating and cleaning your hoops!
Mon, May 17, 2004 - 4:48 PMWhen my hoops get really dirty and the tape is falling off, I see it as an opportunity to re-decorate it, thus giving it new life and new colors. Otherwise, just a wet cloth and a light spray of 409 works great for cleaning. s for the tape falling off, it's best just to replace it, unless you really want to use glue to stick it back on. 77 spray, maybe?
I prefer the cloth tape to the electrical tape, as it holds up better and doesn't scrape off when the hoop hits the ground. Since I practice in my back yard, which is mostly concrete, longevity of tape is a big factor when choosing what to use when decorating. -

Re: Decorating and cleaning your hoops!
Fri, June 13, 2008 - 9:18 AMI've looked at identitape. Lovely stuff and good prices. Shame they only take visa/mc... they don't accept my card : (
I'd have to use my bank card and I just won't use it online after a incident a few years ago and they only take call in's on card's if $100.00+ blah
Anyone have a good place besides identitape that is a bit more flexable on paying? -
-
Re: Decorating and cleaning your hoops!
Fri, July 11, 2008 - 9:01 AMyou can send them a check. i did this when all i had was a discover card. i can't remember exactly how i did my order, but there is a button when you go to "check out" that lets you save "quote" or something like that. you can email them and ask. they're super nice.

Re: Decorating and cleaning your hoops!
Thu, July 17, 2008 - 1:41 AMI've begun applying a layer of clear vinyl tape over the top of mine to preserve the layers beneath...they're only 2.75 per roll at identitape.com
-
-
Re: Decorating and cleaning your hoops!
Thu, July 17, 2008 - 9:21 AMI use the clear vinyl too, it's great to use over the specialty tapes (glitter, etc) to keep it from getting scratched up. Or at least keep it from getting scratched up as quickly. :)

Re: decorating your hoops!
Mon, August 6, 2007 - 9:40 PMI have found that goo be gone ( a citrius base oil) & an old cloth towel takes off stubborn tape and any sticky residue. This can be bought at any store like Target or AutoZone and is very inexpensive. Sometimes I have to leave it on a particular area for a few minutes before removing really stuck tape, but once thats gone just wipe down your hoop with the oil and use another cloth to remove the goo. -
-
Re: decorating your hoops!
Tue, August 7, 2007 - 9:13 AMI have one that's all gooey from melting in the sun. Other than that the tape is still in fairly decent shape. I tried ungooing it with rubbing alcohol but that didn't do the job. I'm worried that if I use something more industrial like goo-gone it will take off not only the goo but also the rest of the tape. Anyone have any experience with this? -

Re: decorating your hoops!
Wed, August 8, 2007 - 7:40 PMIf you clean off tubing with Goo Gone (or Citrisolve, or your degreaser of choice), make sure you remove all of the Goo Gone afterward. I mean all. When you think you have it all gone, wipe it down yet again, until your tubing is restored to its original factory matte finish.
Residual Goo Gone will make any tape subsequently applied to the hoop a slippery, gooey mess of adhesive which transfers to everything - skin, hair, carpet, pets, significant others... And it's much harder to remove from those things.
Trust me, I know (mostly from decorating my previously-crusty-in-need-of-a-good-degreasing playa bike with it though, not my hoops, thank god!!). ;-)
I would not use it on hoops that still have tape you'd like to save on them for this reason. -

Re: decorating your hoops!
Wed, July 16, 2008 - 4:25 PMI'm very lazy. Do you have any experience just taping over oozing tape obviously with bigger tape?

Re: decorating your hoops!
Tue, August 14, 2007 - 2:08 PMI order my tape from www.identi-tape.com you get a 15% discount if you give a special code from hooping.org "hula hula." In the product menu just make sure you click on Hula Hoop Tape. I just got Photoluminescent and Rainbow sheen, they're pretty schnazy i must say. Vinyl tape is best for grip from what I have experienced. The reflective and glitter are fun but tend to have a shorter life span than vinyl. Good luck! -

Re: decorating your hoops!
Tue, August 14, 2007 - 6:59 PMI wrapped my hoop in bicycle handlebar grip tape. In the same day i learned to chest hoop, knee hoop indefinitely, and move the hoop from the knees on up. It looks cool too. Very much more grippy than standard electrical tape (which i used to tape on the ends of the bike grip tape). -

Re: decorating your hoops!
Fri, June 13, 2008 - 12:22 PMi got bored with tapes so i went to a craft store and bought a roll of thin adhesive. its like those booger things you can apply posters to a wall with, but its in a strip form. then over that i applied different styles of ribbons. your color/pattern selection skyrockets!! and its usually less expensive. however the only major downfall that i learned after letting my son use one is to beware of letting it rub on streets or anything of the sort as it will start to fray the ribbon. otherwise its all good :) -

Re: decorating your hoops!
Fri, July 11, 2008 - 8:33 AMthe booger stuff is a form of rubber cement....maybe that would work too!.....
I refer to rubber cement as booger stuff since my son and I use to paint it on a plastic plate, let it dry, then flick them at each other....bad mom?

Re: decorating your hoops!
Fri, July 11, 2008 - 9:39 AM.this was such a tweaky project but i had success w/ double sided flooring duct tape, white, thin..and metallic confetti .
put confetti in a roasting pan and slid the sticky side thru a few times to coat it (you can add glitter or sand, colorful, like in aquariums or sand art to fill in the parts that confetti misses)...
peel off the backing as in the glitter tapes and wrap as usual, seal edges w/ vinyl, then friction tape.. much to my surprise it worked, tho intially some strays fly off, it sticks real well... and the more i use it, the more compressed the confetti gets....not a longevity hoop, but certainly a fun one and glittery and certainly different for special occasions or w/ the kids. -
-
Re: decorating your hoops!
Thu, July 17, 2008 - 8:02 AMWow, that's a great idea. You could even put some clear vinyl over the confetti job so that all of it stays on.

Re: decorating your hoops!
Wed, October 29, 2008 - 2:15 PMWhat is the lightest tape? does anyone know? -
-
Re: decorating your hoops!
Wed, October 29, 2008 - 4:52 PMI have used ribbon along with gaffers tape very successfully. I suspect depending on they type of fabric you use you can get the weight down quite a bit. All you have to do is place the tape over the very edge of the ribbon/fabric to hold it in place. Alternate the strips of fabric and tape and the fabric stays in place perfectly.

Re: decorating your hoops!
Thu, October 30, 2008 - 5:18 AMHarness/colour coding tapes are very light, lighter than electrical tape, which is next up. But the lighter they are the less resilient to scratches and damage.
Gaffer tapes are the heaviest and also the most resilient.
-
-
Re: decorating your hoops!
Fri, October 31, 2008 - 1:42 AMThe lighter the tape, the poorer the coverage.... it takes a bunch of layers of harness tape to actually get to the same intensity you see on the roll - when applied to a black hoop, my green harness tape looks greenish black, then blackish green, then finally green after the third layer.

Re: decorating your hoops!
Fri, October 31, 2008 - 12:57 PMThe look of is isn't what i'm going for... I'd spin it with just the bare hoop if it didn't feel to slippery. I just want the tiniest bit of traction. Thanks guys! -
-
Re: decorating your hoops!
Fri, October 31, 2008 - 1:10 PMhave you tried just sanding it? sorry of this has already been suggested, but I've found that it feels almost as grippy as cloth or gaffers tape (without the added weight) to sand the tubing down with medium grain sand paper. I reverse direction when sanding to make a criss cross groove pattern. If you still wanted a bit of color or flash, adding a single spiral of tape over the sanding could work....

Re: decorating your hoops!
Fri, October 31, 2008 - 6:03 PMFor my everyday practice hoops, I keep it simple, with electrical tape. For my birthday I got a box full of new tapes thanks to Identi-tape.com but am hesitant to actually take my pretty hoops out and hoop with them for fear of getting dirty. Even though I know I can clean it, maybe I'm just a weirdo hehe
