So I've been hooping nearly a year now (unbelievable, a year already!!) and I've experimented with several sizes of hoops along the way, yet I keep going back to the very first hoop I ever made.. which is 42" diameter 3/4" tubing 160psi.
With very few hoopers in my area, I rely on all of those fantastic videos posted by all you wonderful fellow hoopers, and I can't help but notice hoop size differences. For example, Spiral seems to use a very small diameter hoop (no clue what type of tubing and psi she uses) but she makes that hoop look so quick and light and she hoops effortlessly. I know obviously this is also due to her amazing skills :) but I'm wondering if I should graduate, in a way, to a smaller/lighter hoop. I struggle with the smaller sizes every time I try, so I always end up going back to my default 42", which is comfortable for me but feels so heavy and slow..
So I'm just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on this. What diameter/size/psi do you all prefer?

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Sat, March 17, 2007 - 2:45 PMMy default hoop is one of the first hoops I made - like yours, it's a 42" diameter made of 3/4" 160 psi tubing. I use this hoop for several reasons: sentimental value, my familiarity/comfort with the size/weight, and the superficial (it's so pretty!). I have hoops of other diameters, tubing sizes, psi, weight, etc. but this is the one I go back to when I am having trouble with a trick or learning something new. I recently made a conscious effort to use other hoop sizes, so I am working with a 38", a 39", and a 40". Some things I am not able to do as easily with the smaller hoops because I am so used to the size, weight, and rhythm of my 42" hoop. For example, with my 42" hoop I can pass the hoop on my elbows from front to back in a very rhythmic circle. With the 38" hoop, I can sometimes pass it behind my back but it's very hit or miss. Although it can be frustrating at times, I think it's good for my brain to be challenged by trying to relearn. I also tell myself that there is no urgent rush to become proficient with a 38" hoop so it's okay for me to get comfortable with it gradually. It is interesting to see how much slower a 42" hoop feels after working with a smaller hoop - I noticed that too! -

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Sat, March 17, 2007 - 3:13 PM1/2" 160 PSI coming up to my navel. for me it's better for tricks, but still has some good weight (not too much:) and stiffness. i've gifted some and my friends love it, too.

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Mon, March 19, 2007 - 11:00 AMI have a much easier time getting my groove on with a 42", 3/4" tubing, 160 psi hoop also. I've recently started playing with a 38" hoop, 1/2" tubing, have no idea what the psi is though. Shoulder hooping is a lot harder for me with that one (I guess because I'm so broad shouldered, lol) but leg stuff is easier. I do drop the smaller hoop more frequently though. The smaller size gives you a bit more versatility overall, because it makes some things possible/easier that are too awkward (like vertical under-the-leg passes) with the larger size. I can't do them yet (yet!) but my suspicion is breaks would be near-impossible with the larger size. -

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Mon, March 19, 2007 - 11:36 AMumm.. excuse my ignorance but when you are refering to a 42" diameter hoop that is measuring the height from top to bottom correct? Does anyone know how much circumference (ie length ) to measure to make a hoop of that diameter? -
-
Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Mon, March 19, 2007 - 11:39 AMthe circumference formula is C=Pi x D
so 42 inch hoop diameter (from top to bottom) is 131.88 inch circumference! hope that helps -

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Mon, March 19, 2007 - 11:20 AMI use 44" 3/4 160psi as my favorite but switch around alot depending on where I am or the music. For Psy trance parties I bring out my uv hoop that is around 41" so it can move faster to the BPM, if it's outdoors I use my glowtape hoop so I can charge it in blacklights and run off to the darkness to play and that one is 40". For ambient/chill music I use my favorite cause it moves slower and I can flow with the beats.
I really flip flop a lot though depending on my mood and the atmosphere. -

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Mon, March 19, 2007 - 3:02 PMI tend to use 36 inch hoops now - in both 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch (ID) material. My lovely new fire hoop is 36 inch and both my led hoops are 38 inch. I notice a big difference in my lighter/ thinnner 36 inch hoop because it has less control but it is considerably more cheeky and fun - I think I remember Christabel describing the thinner material as being more childlike and reckless and I agree. I am only 5 foot 2 inches tall so I find the larger hoops really slow me down.
Not sure about psi measurement but the material is rated 9, 12 or 16 bar. Most of mine are made of 9 bar. -

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Mon, March 19, 2007 - 4:22 PMI'm also short... a little under 5'1" and I also like a smaller 36" or 38" hoop.
Although, someone at burningman had a HUGEMONGOUS hoop last year, taller than me and that was fun, in a different way.

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Tue, March 20, 2007 - 5:00 AMSharna, what type of tubing is this? I haven't heard of tubing rated this way, only the psi rated type. Where do you get this from? Just curious :)
I'm only 5'2" as well, maybe that's why my 42" seems to move so slowly.. never really contemplated the height factor.
Thanks for all the responses! It's pretty neat to see such a broad range of preferred hoop sizes.. -

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Fri, March 23, 2007 - 7:39 PMHi Hadria, I live in the Uk and I think we use a different rating system. I know that my hoops are considerably lighter than many of those that I have come across that have been imported from the states. This is also the same for my friend Diana who also buys her pipe in the Uk. Both of us wrap plenty of tape on our piping as well. So I'm guessing the bar rating is similar to the psi rating, they are just different types of pressure rating. (shall I say rating one more time...rating! lol)

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Sun, March 25, 2007 - 9:28 AMHadria,
There are several ways to rate tubing. The ratings are relative and not an absolute. I have attempted to find a chart to convert PSI to Schedule 20,40 etc. I did not find what I was looking for, but the Schedule 40 is thicker than 160PSI. So 160PSI would be like Schedule 20.
I don't know if that helps. I did find this chart that gives some details.
TABLE OF PIPE SIZES USING THE “SCHEDULE” SYSTEM

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Mon, March 19, 2007 - 10:01 PMI use 3/4" 160psi and the hoops I have now are between 38" and 43". I like the bigger one for practicing some of the step-throughs and such, but when I really wanna let it fly, I have to say: the smaller one is working out to be my favorite.
I have some 3/4" 160psi cut and ready to join that'll make hoops starting as small as 31" or so. Will be interesting to see what comes of the small ones. Also, I've been wanting to try 3/4" 100psi, and 1/2" 160psi for a while now. I wanna try both in smaller diameters and see what differences they'll make for hand and leg-hooping.

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Tue, March 20, 2007 - 12:36 AMIt might be useful if people posted their height and build along with their hoop preference.
I'm confused by this diameter talk because my first hoop comes up just above my waist and is 41". I have another that comes up to my chest because I read somewhere else that it should be that big and I don't know the diameter but it must be way bigger than 42". But now reading people talking about hoops smaller than 40", I'm wondering. But once again, maybe it all gets back to height and build and body proportions.

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Tue, March 20, 2007 - 5:45 AMMan, I get so much useful info from this tribe! Hooping advice, refreshers in mathematical equations...........I love it!!!!!
Anyway, I hoop with 3/4 inch 160 psi. About 41 inches in diameter. I'm 5'4, average build (128 lbs.). IT's been a good size for my learning process during this past year. But, I'm ready to diversify. I'd like to try a lighter or smaller size because sometimes my hoop feels a bit too heavy or slow for me to really get down to faster music. -

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Tue, March 20, 2007 - 8:42 AMI may be the only one here, but I really prefer the 1" 100 p.s.i. for hoops. They are generally between 3 and 3 1/2 feet in diameter and covered with gaffer's tape ... makes them the perfect weight. I find the 160 psi just too stiff and heavy ... the heavier stuff actually bruises my hands if I do hand hooping.
however, my hooping style is generally a lot slower than most people's too ... less off the body "tricks" and more like contact staff. (if you don't know what contact staff is, ignore my last sentence.) -

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Tue, March 20, 2007 - 8:54 AMHey Reagan!!
I think I want to try 1" 100 psi. I get some major bruising everytime I knee hoop. Ouch! But, you said you hoop a lot slower than most. I would have imagined that size hoop going faster than the 3/4" 160 psi. Am I wrong? -
-
Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Tue, March 20, 2007 - 1:24 PMActually the 1" 100psi is the exact same weight as the 3/4" 160 psi. Doesn't seem logical, but I've shipped many rolls of each kind of tubing to Hawaii over the past year and the weight is always within an ounce or two. The only difference is the width which gives each a different feel.
Some people think that it's easier to do tricks with the 3/4" and some like the 1" better - it's all a matter of personal preference. Personally, I like playing with all different sizes of hoops. And it's made me a much more versatile hooper.;))
I have 2 fire hoops - 3/4" 160psi & 36" dia and 1" 100psi & 40" dia (bigger hoop is slower, smaller hoop is better for off the body or vertical tricks) - I like both just depends on the speed of the music, the type of party, the performance space, and my mood.
I have furry hoops made w/ 3/4" 160psi in sizes from 38" - 44" dia all weighted w/ water so they are heavy and have a totally different feel.
My standard hoops are 3/4" and 1" ranging in size from 36" up to 46" dia. Seems that the bigger hoops get used more but that could be cause I encourage beginners to try them first.
I also have some 1 1/4" hoops that are almost 5 feet in diameter. They are really big and really heavy; WAY slower and easier for brand new hoopers or those struggling to keep the hoop up. They don't take much energy to use and the feel is a lot more meditative almost like getting a back and tummy massage.
I encourage everyone to try different sizes/weights/etc. Diversify your hooping experience.
happy hooping!!!!!!!! -

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Tue, March 20, 2007 - 1:26 PMMy first hoop was one I bought online so I had no idea about diameter or PSI when I ordered it. I later learned it was a 1" 100psi. I struggled with learning how to do the corkscrew/beam me up because it was so heavy. I thought I was going to give myself carpal tunnel syndrome when I tried hand hooping with it. I also had a really hard time shoulder hooping with it. Heh, but I'm a wuss!
Once I started making my own 3/4" 160psi hoops, I never looked back. The old 1" 100psi hoop is gathering dust. I get it out every once in a while when I want a nice belly massage. I also have a 1/2" 125psi hoop that I really like - nice and light! -

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Tue, March 20, 2007 - 11:21 PMI should add that I'm 5'2" but I have really small hands (I wear size 4 rings) so that might have been one of my issues with the 1" tubing.
I agree with EllenMo - if you have easy access to tubing, definitely give the different diameters and PSIs a try! Finding the right hoop is like dating - lots of trial and error. -

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Wed, March 21, 2007 - 12:10 AMi have two hoops of exactly the same diameter, one is 1' 100psi, and the other is 3/4ths in 160psi, the 3/4th is distinctly heavier and faster. -
-
Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Wed, March 21, 2007 - 12:48 AMWeird! I just weighed my 1" 100psi and my 3/4" 160psi to compare, and although they are the same size the 1" weighs 1 lb 15 oz while the 3/4" weighs 1 lb 8 oz. I wonder if the tape could make that much of a difference! -
-
Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Wed, March 21, 2007 - 10:16 AMmaybe it's the ammount of weight for the point of contact as well as the wind resistance.
Sorta like the idea that a high heel holds as much pressure as an elephant's foot. Since it's concentrated smaller.
-
Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Wed, March 21, 2007 - 10:47 AMWell the higher the psi the thicker the tubing right? So perhaps the 1" 100 psi and the 3/4" 160 use the same amount of material. The 1" psi looks bigger but the tubing itself is thinner and contains more empty space inside than the 3/4" 160 psi. no? -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Thu, March 22, 2007 - 1:00 PMI think that Shadjua is correct. Every time I go back to the Bay Area I buy a 100 ft roll of 3/4" 160psi and a 100 ft roll of 1" 100psi and then ship them through the post office and each costs me the same because the weight is always within a couple ounces for the entire roll. Never weighed the finished hoops, though. But it makes sense that the 1" would use a lot more tape. When you really break it down - it's 33% thicker around - so considerably larger surface area to cover.

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Tue, March 20, 2007 - 7:21 PMI heard that the hoop should come up to between your nipple and your navel, the smaller your waist, the smaller the hoop within those guidelines. I'm 5'1" and was planning on the first hoop I made being 42". I'm working with a 36" children's hoop right now, and it's definetely nice for being so light and quick (plus it's sparkly!) but I'm itching for a bigger, slower one, which I suspect will allow me to take my hooping to the next level...After reading all the replies though, I'm thinking I'll make a bunch of various sizes! I'm so excited to work with different sizes. I say it would never be a bad thing to have an additional hoop of a different size to work with, if only to mix things up a little!

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Tue, March 20, 2007 - 7:26 PMWell, I have three size hoops. A huge one (not sure on the diameter, but its 11.5 ft of tubing) with 1in tubing. Then I have a 45" diameter with the 3/4" tubing and a small collapsible hoop of about 40" with the 3/4" tubing.
I usually use the large hoop to learn new tricks and practice on my non-dominant side. I moved to the medium hoop so I could learn a little variety in size and its better for hand and off the body hooping. I can barely use the small hoop to date, but I am slowly learning. I guess it just depends on what you are doing. But it always takes a few days to adjust to a new hoop. I like being able to use a variety because then I can use whats available since I dont usually have my own with me since I do not have a car.

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Wed, March 21, 2007 - 12:06 AMI can hoop with a 38 inch diameter 3/4ths 160psi, but i don't like to.
Commonly I hoop with a hoop around 47 or 48 inch diameter. Sometimes i'll use a 45 inch diameter.
I'm also 5'10" 300lbs and a size 22/24, i take up more space inside the hoop and if any skinnie hooper is curious, they should put on the puffiest parka they have and try to hoop in a small hoop.
I like my hoops big and or heavy. WORD.
also, size dosne't alwasy equal speed. your body can make the hoop faster. It will take much more work on the part of your body, but it's posible to hoop faster with a large hoop. -

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Mon, March 26, 2007 - 10:45 PMinteresting.
so i just measured what my hoop diameter is "supposed" to be (mid nipple/navel) and it is 49 inches!!!!
ok. i am a total beginner (i can get it to go around of course, but do not know any tricks) , and i had to special order tubing in, so i don't want to waste 7 inches for nothing.
hmmm- any suggestions?
i was planning on making a larger one and then one at 42 inches, but how large should i make the large one? (i want to do over the head moves without dislocating my arm!)
thanks! (3/4 " 160 psi) -

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Tue, March 27, 2007 - 2:21 AMIf you are incredibly tall, but not incredibly wide, you can probably size that down quite a bit... the mid-chest size is a generalization, designed to be as big as possible (for most non-tall people) and yet still be functional for vertical hand hooping and other things that would put the hoop too low to the ground if it was much larger.
My workshop hoops and the ones I haul around to share are between 40" and 44" - the 44" are the ones I swap people onto if they are having difficulty, and that size works for most beginners, aside from the folks who are XXL or larger, who are often happier with something 46-48" instead.
If you ordered a roll of tubing, you'll have enough for some variation - so the 49" one can be a Teacher - the giant, slow hoops that many of us use when we're trying to master a new trick. Make a few more, maybe 45" and 42" and 39".. and start playing! Having multiple hoops means you'll always have enough to share, and having them in different sizes means that you'll be able to find the best one suited for whatever you are doing at a given time :)
X.

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Fri, April 6, 2007 - 6:44 PMLast time I checked, they didn't have the right kind of tubing at Home Depot (they only had the flimsy 'hose' kind, not stiff enough), but they did have the right kind at Lowes (sp?).
And oddly enough, I got my tubing at a smaller mom/pop type lumber/hardware/supply yard in northern Vermont.

Re: Your preferred hoop diameter / psi
Sun, April 8, 2007 - 8:34 AMHey emmilu, I live in northern NJ and have had no problem finding 3/4" 160psi tubing (look in the plumbing section). Lowe's seems to carry it more than Home Depot, and the price was better.. about $25 for 100 feet. I think it's used a lot for irrigation type work, so if you live near any farms you shouldn't have too much trouble finding it. Good luck!!
