Flying with your LED hoop

Howdy folks!
I'm getting ready for my trip out to SanFran for New Years...and I just got off the phone with the airlines and they said I had to remove the batteries otu of my LED hoop before I can check it like I would a baby stroller. Is this true? Has anyone flown with one before? Please oh please help me out!!

Baby stroller? How about a cell phone or laptop or back massager? Don't be scared of security. You're a hooper and if the duffussi checking bags don't know a hoop from a pipe bomb prove it by hooping it or letting them do it. Put it through the Smith company's Sentinel, a bomb sniffing machine. Check it if you must but such an unusual item may be special handled by the crew if you're cool enough.

Me: As a Tom Anderson who gets put through the sentinel every time I fly I always wear my best tie-dye, no metal whatsoever, very simple carry ons, and circus freak attitude. I show up three hours early, of course and waste no time checking bags. For you, carry the hoop to check in, don't ask to check it, take it through security & ask the counter to check it. Show 'em some moves while you're at it!

I have had no problem flying with my LED hoop or my fire hoop. I have check it and it usually arrives at the oversize luggage area. Taking the batteries out? that's just a wierd request.

Bring extra batteries so you can hoop all night!

my hoop, a PSI hoop, for example, the batteries can't be removed, thye are infact rechargable and come with a handy charger i would not want to try to attempt to take it apart to get the batteries out.....hmmmmm
i wonder why they want the batteries out?
    good luck working it out

I just took a cruise and two of my hoops came with me. I taped them together and they took up one checked bag. People didn't know what to do with me but with they tossed round the idea of not letting the hoops through without an oversize chrge. i pointed out that the hoops are frequent fliers, this was not their first time on jetblue and if they let them through this would not be their last. And thus they were checked without a second thought.

About batteries, i don't know. Since they couldn't open my hoops they had a drug dog come by and give em a whiff and they took the dogs over all our other baggage while they were at it.

I always fly with my Psi hoop and fire hoop, somethimes as many as 8 hoops at a time. (although im in Canada) . I usually dont give them more info than that they are 'hoola hoops' (a big smile and positive energy seems to go a long way~theya re like~oh those kids today!?!) I check em as a bag( oversize/fragile )and have to walk em down to be swabbed , xray'd etc..they have threatened the extra charge but so far (cross fingas) they havent made me pay. I also have a hoop bag that fits em all nicely , but before i got that i used to take garbage bags and packing tape and tape the garbage bags around em all tight, it worked well except was a hassle every flight and not super environmentally friendly. I found they got kinda dirty if i didnt have em covered, but im supa protactive ov ma hoops, ya know! Good Luck!!!

i would be interested in this 'check it like a baby stroller at the gate' scenario, that would be super!!

I have only flown domestic with my hoops and I am travelling to Thailand to teach hooping for a few weeks. I will be travelling with about 9 hoops including my fire hoop. I figured I would just tape them all together as one big heavy hoop. As long as the hoops don't weigh more than 50 pounds (which they won't) I figured I would be ok.

Anybody have their 2 cents on flying with a bulk amount of hoops?

In my experience, it depends on the airport as to whether you can gate-check items. I definitely prefer gate checking, especially if I have multiple flights. I can be sure that my hoops get from one plane to the next. It also eliminates some of the handling involved and reassures me. However, every time I go to the airport there are new rules and from Raleigh/Durham Airport, where I always fly from, I have to check my hoops in as baggage now. They have no sympathy for hoops or guitars. It really sucks. I always saran wrap my hoops and then wrap them in a long piece of cloth that I made from the pants legs of some old jeans. So far, my hoops have arrived undamaged. You can see a photo of our wrapped hoops on my profile. I stick a bunch of "fragile" stickers all over the package, say a little prayer, and let it go. I always have a bit of anxiety going out, as I don't like the idea of making hoops when I arrive. But coming back I can relax. I'm always making new hoops. Still trying to find the perfect one for me.

wrapping in old pant legs sounds like really good idea. I have a bunch of thick canvas I got for free, that should probably protect them really good. I am kind of worried they might want to actually open the hoops up, to make sure I am not smuggling in drugs, chickens or small children. Wait a minute, I should only think positive about this.....everything will be fine and my babys will arrive unscathed, yeah!

When i used to wrap em in garabage bags they couldnt really see em , but they obviously thought it was a large hoola hoop. They did put it through the oversize xray machine when available and/or swab it, so they shouldnt have too many concerns, but I guess the big factor is that all airports/airlines/workers are different. When theres a problem I am sure to let them know ive taken them a million times before and that its my job, they need to be with me as that's why im goin. but as always..positive thoughts work wonderz.

The way that I wrap the denim around the hoops allows for inspection without taking the whole mess apart. The fabric laps on the inside of the hoops and can be moved aside. I don't think there's any way to be prepared for every possible scenario but the more we do it, the better precedent we set for the next hooper who travels the airlines. Since I am traveling lately to places where there are other hoopers it seems that there might be a way to establish a "rescue" service for those hoopers who might need an emergency hoop at the last minute. I'd be glad to lend or give a hoop to any hooper who visits our neck of the woods and is hoop-less (or hapless). Seems karmic-ally athe right thing to do.

I really like the concept of lend-a-hoop. Perhaps this could work with a separate thread on this tribe? I would, indeed, feel rescued if I was on the borrowing end and enjoy being on the lending end. Good thinkin'

i try to check my luggage at the curb as much as possible. those dudes have seen it all. they were so accomidating and one of the guys was so happy he shouted "A HULA HOOP!!" just remember they check all kinds of crazy stuff. skis, musical instruments, huge boxes, surfboards...you name it and they've done it. i wouldn't take the batteries out b/c well that would suck.

    good luck!

How about just flying with a hoop? Can anyone direct me to some info or prior posts with the info? Would checking it at the curb incur damage do you think? What has everyone found the best way to travel on a plane with a hoop is?
