I made some smaller hoops last night for trying out poi moves. I used 1/2" 100psi, irrigation tubing, but they seem a bit light. What other materials have you hoopers been using?
BTW, i used a 99" circumference (not sure of the diameter right now - at work.)

Re: Materials for "poi" hoops?
Mon, February 12, 2007 - 8:59 PMI use the same material as my regular hoops, 3/4" 200psi.. but then I am big, strong and mighty :) (swimming and waterpolo = upper body strength)... diameter is about ... ack... 3'ish, I think. I'm not beside them, either.. but I also do poi moves with my regular hoops (again, tall and mighty) which are 44"ish, I think.
Oh, I'm so vague tonight, sorry :)

Re: Materials for "poi" hoops?
Mon, February 12, 2007 - 9:17 PMThank you Jessica and Xta. That helps. The regular sized hoops were going to be too much on my hands for extended use (old hand injuries.) If I can find the 1/2" 160psi (I use the 3/4" 160psi normally) that sounds like it would be good. I've seen your vid of poi with those big hoops Xta, and I AM impressed. The weaves are more difficult than they look, as I found out last night <g>, and I'm sure made more so with the bigger hoops. -

Re: Materials for "poi" hoops?
Tue, February 13, 2007 - 12:44 AMI actually had a breakthrough with the 3-beat weaves just last weekend.. decided to try it out, having worked on it a BIT last summer, and *click* I was doing it! Prob due to a lot of demo-ing thumb hooping in classes lately... heh, or maybe my marathon knitting sessions have toughened up my thumb muscles so they can handle it now!
Good luck with your tubing search! Don't forget to actually check any tubing you can get your hands on.. here in Vancouver, Daina's 3/4" 100psi from one supplier is really similar to my 3/4" 200psi from another. *shrug* Go figure!

Re: Materials for "poi" hoops?
Mon, February 12, 2007 - 9:21 PMi use my 3/4" 100 psi hoops that are 35" diameter. I tape them with mostly sparkly tape, but a little 1/2" gaffers. I use these hoops for everything! and i do like that they are small enough to use comfortably for me with poi style moves. i also practice sometimes with 1/2" 100 psi. i've never seen 1/2 160psi, but wow, i've been wondering whether it exists for about a year. it seems like it would be a great compromise to toughen up those 1/2" hoops a bit. sometimes they seem a little flimsy (not like walmart hoops or anything) but still can lose their circular beauty. a guy at lowe's told me he couldn't get it. where are you finding yours? -

Thu, February 15, 2007 - 6:22 AMi found mine at home depot, believe it or not, it's white, from the plumbing section, about 25 bucks for 100 ft. hope this helps! i got this there b/c i couldn't find the 3/4' 160 PSI that i wanted, but i'm so glad, because i love the size and weight of this tubing. -

Re: Materials for "poi" hoops?
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 4:18 AMI also found the 1/2 inch 160 psi white tubing at Lowes and Home Depot in the plumbing section. However, I cannot find connectors-ugh. Can anyone suggest specific information(even item #'s) for connectors for this tubing and where they found them, please?
Are people making their hoops in 35 inch diameter wiith this tubing?
Supersize size thank you :)

Re: Materials for "poi" hoops?
Tue, February 13, 2007 - 8:04 AMWhen I do poi hooping i use the small dollar store hoops, then cover them in fabric. they are light but tI have had much success working with them i even gotten to thepoint where i can do better hoop jumps thru my small hoops then my big hoop. if you look through my photos you can see my little hoops i poi with.

Re: Materials for "poi" hoops?
Wed, February 14, 2007 - 8:27 AMThanks again everyone. It helped to know it was doable with the lighter weight hoops. I haven't made it out to the local hardware stores yet to look for that heavier 1/2" material, but I picked those 100psi (30" dia) hoops up again last night and spent some more time with them. I decided not to jump right into poi for my "getting used to these" time, but to mess around with a move I'd been doing with my full-sized hoop. It involves looping vertically in front of me one hoop, doing a half figure eight to the back, transferring to the other hand in the back, then moving to the front thus forming a circuit, all the while the hoop is looping, 'round, and 'round and ... ;-) Not sure what it's called, but I had a ton of fun. Then, I picked up my bigger, heavier hoop and was able to do it with it too with only a few tries. With the amount of practicing it took to get that looking smooth, I would have had really sore arms and shoulders this morning if I hadn't of learned it with the lighter hoop. Sweet!
