so, i haven't been out to a club in a looooong time. 6 years probably and i've only been hooping for 3 or 4 months. well, some friends invited me to go see DJ Tiesto when he comes through next month. it's not my absolute favourite type of music, but it'd be nice to get out so i'm planning on going. i'm wondering though if i can/should bring my hoop along? i've never seen anyone else with a hoop ever in person, so i'm wondering how i would be received. plus, i'm wondering if there will even be room to use it in a crowded club? i don't know. like i said, i'm a newbie to hooping and it's been ages since i've even been out at all anyway. not sure what's appropriate or not. insight?

As a promoter, I always winced a little when I saw hoops come in to a party that would reach capacity. Either valuable dance space would be lost or there's be the inevitable commotion when one was lost, mangled or misplaced. But for a less-than-maximum occupancy party, they always helped compress the crowd and added a bit of flash. $0.02

at a tiesto concert i doubt u will have room to bring it, he always sells out or is way crowded. also, call the club if u can, cause alot of places wont let u bring it in....ive had trouble even getting it into raves sometimes because security wont let u take it in....

yeah, my friends that i'm going with say they think it will be totally packed, so i doubt i'd have the room to do it anyway unless i was on a stand or something.

call the club. if you can't get an answer about the hoop, at least ask if there is a coat-check room (you may be able to check it). do not bring your most precious hoop. the best time to hoop may be early on in the night.

Ooh. Tiesto will get packed to the max!!! My experience is that most clubs say no. Even large outdoor festivals say "no" sometimes. I was heartbroken when I could not bring my hoop into Coachella.

One thing to keep in mind, even if security does let you bring it in, your fellow club goers may not be so cool about it. As long as you respect the space, and don't crowd the dance floor, I say screw them. I brought a hoop into a goth club once. The club had 3 separate rooms, I was in the very back of the least crowded room where the music was more industrial. I had a tooooon of space. There was no way I was in anybody's way. I had a small group that were into it, but the majority of the club goers were giving me really dirty looks and making rude comments. Later on, there was pics of me posted on that clubs website, and someone left a really rude comment.

this makes me so sad! why is it that people must tear others down? spooky and aloof is one thing, grumpy judgemental uber-goths are another! :(

and i say that with total goth love!

i know, i bought a psi hoop for the electric daisy festival...because ive seen others have their hoops in there once before. i was soo upset and frusterated when they let me in, and all of a sudden said i cant have it..and either i had to throw it out, or put it in my car. problem was, i was already in the party, and if i left to put it away, i was out for good...i made such a fuss because i was told before hand by the owner, that it would be no problem to get it in...so eventually they let me put it in the lost and found so i didnt have to leave the party...but really....i had to make such a big deal just to make sure it was safe...i mean, really...who would throw out their psi hoop...come on...and after i was told i could bring it in...its bogus....its not going to hurt anyone....
and later that night, i saw others with their hoops in the party....i paid vip to get in, and had my hoop taken...and here are the general admission people and they got their hoops in...its totally wack how security acts.

It totally depends on the venue.

I've taken my hoop to clubs that had incredible DJs and should have been packed, but there was tooooons of space. And sometimes there's not an inch to move. It is really annoying when you have to go back out or find someplace to store your hoop. And I don't know about you, but I always feel super anxious when my hoop is just stowed behind a bar somewhere. In fact, last time I did that, I came back in to find all these people trying to use my PSI and knocking it into everything! After I had asked them to keep it safe for me.
It also honestly depends on what level you are hooping-wise. I recommend making business cards (you can get them for free from vistaprint.com, just pay shipping). It makes you seem a lot more professional. Definitely call ahead.
On the space and rudeness issue, sometimes I understand. I mean, if I was at a show that I was really excited about and wanted to really get into it, but couldn't because one person was taking massive amounts of space, I would be a little peeved. Honestly, I never, ever hoop in a crowded party space UNLESS I have been asked by the host/DJ/owner to perform. I've always felt it's a little rude to ask people to move for me. I also never hoop in front of a band playing unless they have asked me to or it's just a DJ, because I feel like that draws attention away from the people that everyone came to see.
            Good luck and Happy Hooping!

you were told you coudln't bring a hoop into coachella??? a huge outdoor festival? that's the most absurd thing i've ever heard. there would be no way i could stand with that, i'd be there all day being that annoying person trying to get in touch with busy people to straighten that up. i honestly don't know how i'd deal with that. if i travelled far with a few hoops iw ould have to bitch my way in, or they would have to garantee protection of my hoops since thats completely unexpected and unreasonable. if i had only gone a few hours to get there i'd prolly turn around honestly. that's absolutley absurd! how can you it even be justified? it's in no way a harmful object. people are camping! and bringing in all kinds of stuff. how can they even say that hula hoop isn't allowed? i repeat: absurd!

i feel like you must have been dealing with someone who didnt know what they were talking about. were there other hoops on the inside later?

yeah, these asses tried to pull that crap with us and they were never even busy, they banned hoops because they could be a potential weapon, stupid, so we just boycotted that club and then my BF got booked to play and I told, "Well have fun, I am not going for principle sake" they had absolutely no reason to ban hoops when for months before they were fine and there were never any problems with bringing the hoops, well the DJ putting on this particular night got the okay, door guy tries to give me shit and say, well, we will see if we will allow them or not tonight on how the night goes, a real dick he was being. I looked at him and said, Buddy, it's called hoop etiquette, we LOVE our hoops, respect our hoops and therefore will not allow any jackass to disrespect our hoops, well, the night was fine and few weeks later we go back and the attitude of door dude had totally changed and he was real cool with us, and now months later no one goes there anymore, cuz the owner's blow and all that is is straight up karma, we much prefer our regular spot where our security "steals" our hoops all night so those big bad boys can hoop themselves, gotta love it, we are the only spot whose security hoops it up all night with us ;-)

I only saw two girls carrying hoops at Coachella that year. I believe they were affiliated w/ Lucent Dossier. They weren't actually performing with the hoops, just kind of wandering.

on the first day of bonnaroo this year, i was told i couldn't bring my hoop in. this was after traveling to tennesee from los angeles with my hoops. i had just waited for over 30 min to get in through security only to have to return to my camp and put it away. i was DEVASTATED. then to make matters worse, when i finally got in that night, i saw other hoops AND there was a booth inside SELLING them! UG!! i wanted to cry. it seems like this was something a lot of people went through on that first day... but happy ending... there was no problem getting them in for the rest of the week.

Yeah, security at festivals tend to not know what's going on. I haven't had a problem with hoops at any fest, but anytime I get a security guy that says no to anything I want to bring in, I just turn around and go through a different line and get right in.

Yep, happened to me too on the morning of the second day (Friday) after I had been hooping inside on the first night. I could see people hooping so I went off on "security/gate checker". I told him I had been in there the night before, hooping all over the place and at the SuperHooper workshop and that I could see hoopers from where we were standing. I also pointed out the fact that the frisbees being thrown around were more dangerous than a hoop. The guy behind piped up in my defense (I have no idea who he was) and I guess the security dude kind of gave up cause he said "Talk to him" and pointed to the head security guy at the gate. That guy said, "Hoops? Good grief, yes." No more problems after that with getting the hoop in.

that's ridiculous! I was at Bonnaroo this year and I never went anywhere without my hoop! I never, ever had a problem bringing it in. It is utterly ridiculous that someone told you they weren't allowed, seeing as they had a SCHEDULED official hoop workshop at the Art of Such'n'Such this year! It was on the Bonnaroo program! Sometimes security guys can just be absolute assholes who want an excuse to exercise any sort of authority. You could just go to a different gate, but it takes freakin' forever to get in cause the line is so long. Blegh.

I almost always take my hoop out to the clubs. But in order to do so, I had to do a lot of talking to the promoters and security. They basically will let me bring it so long as:
    1) no one-handed off body stuff
    2) I put it away if it gets to busy (they let me put it on stage under the table)
    3) I don't let ANYONE else use it.

As for Tiesto - I'm going and I'm not even going to bother calling and asking about it: I already know there is not going to be a spare inch in the whole room.

So ya, call the club and ask what they think, but I would advise against taking it to Tiesto.
