travel hoops on a budget?

topic posted Wed, June 27, 2007 - 1:25 PM by  offlineHunnyBear
anyone know of a place to get one that's under $50 including shipping? I just can't afford $20 shipping on the hoopnotica travel hoop (total $60), and the infinity hoop is even more ($72 with shipping).

thanks! ;o)

I made my own via the instructions on Jason Unbound www.jasonunbound.com/hoops.html

It's a bit of a chore, and requires 2 people to do, but it's probably the cheapest way to go. You can also modify a hoop you already have following the instructions listed. You'll just need 3 extra connectors (of the right size) something to cut the tubing with, some long bungee chord, some pliers and a coathanger. (McGyver, is that you?)

yeah i didn't really want to invest in getting all the supplies... but my friend has made hoops maybe i'll see if she still has enough that i could make one.

unfortunately it's either invest in the supplies or invest in a hoop made by someone else. i'm all about trying to make it myself b/c then i have all the stuff to make more if works out! good luck!

(if you are travelling by plane you can check your hoop, i've done it and the baggage people are always very nice and actually love the hoops! travelling by car is another story though, unless it's a short distance, i don't bring my hoop simply b/c of space and the hoop changing shape.)

i'm thinking of checking them for one trip. for burning man, i'm not sure i can fit everything in one checked bag (i don't want to pay an extra bag fee ;o)

yes, unfortunately they do count it as as 1 whole bag. which i think is like a $50 charge. fricken airlines.

also, if you do check it, keep in mind they will bring it off the plane manually, it won't go through the baggage carousel so they generally set it by/in the little office where you go if they lose your baggage. at least that's where mine was last time i flew. for a second i freaked out...then saw it way accross the room and was SO RELIEVED.

have fun at burning man!! :o)

hey no prob. def hit your friend up. if not the connectors and bungee aren't that expensive, and if you have a hoop you are willing to sacrifise you don't have to pay for more tubing.
Then your just gonna have to find someone with tools. I forgot about the sanding. A powersander is kind of a must and pliers are essential. hmm... now that I think about it. It really is a huge pain. lol. Aww well it is worth it. I just got back from vacation and I tell ya, I was so happy to have my hoop with me!

just make it like you would a regular hoop, 3/4 inch 160 PSI works well. make sure the permanent side of the connector is in well. take a plastic screw anchor, drill a hole on the side of the hoop to secure the permanent connector, put the screw anchor in, and tape over this end and the other side, too, to make a nice connecting spot. then connect the hoop, and drill another hole, as perfect as you can, thru the other side/connector. make the hole smooth so you can take the other screw anchor in/out, but not too loose. voila! keep some extra screw anchors with you just in case you lose one. i got mine at lowe's (yellow, #4-6x 7/8", fits 3/16 drill bit, and you can cut the ends off if you're using 1/2 inch tubing) for around 3 bucks for a box full. to collapse, make into 2 smaller loops, and put anchor back in. you can jam as hard as you want, your hoop is secure. other folks say to put in nails or screws, but the plastic works just as well, and no danger of poking :)
so cost is cost of regular hoop you make plus 3 dollars, and time spent drilling. good luck!

rayna thanks so much for the offer of the discount ;o) $60 right now is too steep for me (i am on the east coast) but i hope to get it one day!

for anyone else interested in knowing how this turned out, i got the one on ebay (i think it was $30 with shipping) the seller was great about doing a custom size/color for me and still shipped it out in less than a week! it's in four pieces with the typical connectors sanded down on one end, and elastic running through the hoop. I used it briefly this weekend and had other people using it, don't seem to have any issues with it staying together. it is narrower tubing (half inch possibly?) and lighter than my other hoops. i'm happy with it for that price, should travel well and suit my needs right now, i hope it has decent durability but i expect that i can repair it if needed.

I made one a few days i put he bungee in is but when i used it around my knees it started to fly apart so i added a small 2 in piece of Velcro the area where the connectors were. it works wonderfully now. I also made a bag for it and carried it all the way through the the airport on three different planes and a boat and now am successfully hooping on the beach in belize. It is an awesome investment or awesome project to work on. you can get bungee by the foot at like west marine or ace. they also have like these metal staple like things to hold it together with.

I wish I'd caught this before now!!! Dahlin' we're driving out to the burn and taking our hoops on our bike rack. You could have used one of ours for the week. Or I'm pretty sure we'd have enough room for yours...I could have grabbed it from you at 777 and then returned it to you at PDF, assuming you had another one at home to play with. Or like I said you could have just used one of ours!!! ARG! Damn work for making me get so behind on everything on tribe!
