Hey everyone, I was wondering if any of you had helpful resources about hooping for kids. I am starting two kids classes (a 5-8yr and 9-12yr). I think I am going to incorporate world dance in the hooping lessons so that kids can learn about other cultures. Any suggestions about how to break down moves for these age groups? I'm really excited to bring hooping to kids here in Pittsburgh. There aren't many of us in this city... YET!

It's also fun with younger kids to play games like having an course where kids are holding up hoops at different heights and the kids run and jump through them, or rolling hoops back and forth, or "jump roping" with the hoops across the room. It's good with kids to break up the on the body hoop play with off the body running around games.
Sounds like fun! Have a good time! Kids are the best hoop teachers cause they just pick them up and do the coolest things from pure imagination.

Wed, July 1, 2009 - 7:10 PMI have a 7 year old and a 9 year old. My 7 yr old son really struggled with starting to hoop (white boy hips, they did not move! LOL). He finally got it when I had him push with his belly, not hips. Now he likes to do the hula hooping chicken (butt and belly out with the chicken wings flapping!) and he can keep it going really well. Not sure if that will help, but kids like to do the funky chicken anyway, and it is fun.

Fri, July 17, 2009 - 2:24 PMIf you have a membership to Hooping University, Diana Lopez of Body Hoops has an excellent video of two kids workshops, one with younger and one with older kids. If you are not a member, you may want to get in touch with her and see if she will send you the video.
