Ribbon instead of tape?

topic posted Wed, June 6, 2007 - 7:56 AM by  Sayra
I was generally surfing the internet today (boss is on vacation), and I found a site that sells hoops that look like they use ribbon instead of tape. They use it in the same way that you would use the decorative tapes (taping down each edge with electrical tape). Has anyone tried this? They have some really unique looking hoops because ribbon that they use in the craft store come in so many different designs and colors. Any thoughts or suggestions?

seems like a cool idea. I'll have to experiment with it.

The potential problem I see first off is grip...but I guess that depends on what kind you get. Seems like the smooth satiny ones would be kinda slippy while you're hooping.

It gives me an idea to toy with...I'll let you know how things work out. *mad scientist hair frizzle* ....yes....much ideas! mwahhhahaha [*franken-hoop*?]

I think I know the site you're referring to (out of Philly I think?) and I have also decorated a hoop with ribbon. I wanted something UV reactive but I'm not particularly fond of the bright flourescent colors and my costume is white and silver. So I taped first and then glued the ribbon down. I'm not super precise at taping so going around the edges of the ribbon with tape didn't really work out for me, so I used that stuff called "mod podge" that's for decoupage, mixed some loose glitter into it and painted it over the ribbon to further secure it. It soaks into the fabric and stiffens it a little and protects it, but it doesn't give it a smooth finish that's too slippy. The hoop is fairly heavy and a little scratchy in places but I don't have any problems with grip (there's a spiral of gaffer's on there too) and it's holding up pretty well, though I don't take it outside. It was pretty labor intensive. It glows fantastically in blacklight! I used white ribbon and some purple with pink flowers printed on it and green trim. There's some flourescent pink tape underneath that glows through. I'll try to remember to take a picture and post it. It's definitely an good alternative to tape if you have the time to devote to it.

I have used ribbon to tape hoops in the past. It looks great, but it doesn't hold up as well as tape. When you drop it, the ribbon frays much worse than tape and begins to look a lot less pretty. If you use ribbon, I would suggest keeping it inside or on the grass.

so im using some of it
its really hard to work with but looks great.
    will take pictures!

Hm! You could make fluttery tassels with it, and use a sticky tape to attach them to your hoop.... or screw the hoop usage, and just make giant cheerleader pompoms for various costumes you may or may not yet have :)

      X.

      Hi all!

I have two hoops from *that philly site.* Yes they are made with grosgrain ribbon (polyester nylon I think). If I wanted to do that myself I think I'd use double-sided tape.

They have good texture so I think they are probably ok compared to other kinds of decorative tape. However, I'm brand spankin new to hooping meaning I know no tricks and I only really know how to hoop in one direction (I'm a counter-clockwise-r). In other words, I can't testify to their good grippyness with 100% confidence.

I'd have made my own hoops (I prefer DIY) but trips to various home depots and lowe's and orchard supply yielded no dice on the 3/4" 160 psi or 1" 100 psi tubing.
