to hoop or not to hoop through the pain ?

Yikes. So I'm a beginner hooper, and after two plus hours of happy hooping yesterday, my waist is blue and black! I've employed some of the suggested remedies (arnica, ice etc.) But I'm wondering what you veterans out there suggest: should I keep hooping today and for all days despite the pain (and perhaps therefore toughening myself up?) Or should I take a break till the bruises subside. It hurts. Boo.

Thanks!

Personally, I'd give it a day or so to heal a bit. You don't want to feel worse. But then again, I hate pain....
And the phrase "No pain, no gain." is actually really bad advice. Pain is a signal your body gives to you that something is wrong.
So, gove yourself a break. You're not a wuss if you take a day off. :)

    Cheers!

I agree. Hooping every other day might be better. Your mind and body need time to process these skills, so giving yourself a break is a good idea.

If you really want to hoop every day, you could vary body areas. For example, upper body hooping one day, then lower body hooping next day, and finally off-the-body hooping (hand hooping) the 3rd day.

    hi yolande,

i'm new to hooping too, and i have had exactly the same problem, with very scary bruises on my hips, elbows and left shoulder. one of the first times i hooped and was trying to learn tricks, i was spinning the hoop around my hand for hours and didn't realise i could hurt myself - in the morning my hand was totally swollen and extremely painful. i was actually afraid i had damaged the bones, but it healed up ok with some sleep and vit c.

since then, if i get bruises i will take a break for a day or two until they start to go away. when i go back to hooping i will hoop for shorter periods of time - it seems that 1/2 hr of hooping each day is not too bad for bruising, but more than an hour means that i will probably be sore the next day, especially if i am trying new things.

hope you're back to hooping soon!

also remember, though, that when learning something new, you are prone to bruising. But once your body gets it, you will not get the bruising anymore. My ankle was swollen up like a watermelon the night I learned to kick the hoop up from the floor - but now it doesn't even leave a mark.

Okay, there's a new trick I want to learn... TIPS, Reagan! :)

I agree with the "switch up your focus" advice.. remember to work on hooping in the opposite direction, too, for even development of your muscles :)

i have tried hooping in the opposite direction, but it felt really, really awkward. like writing with my left hand. i hadn't bothered to try it again, but it does make sense to work the muscles evenly on both sides of the body.

did it take you long to master hooping in the other direction? i wonder if it makes you more ambidextrous?? next time that left shoulder starts getting bruised again i'll switch directions and get a matching one on the other shoulder!!

It takes me a little while to learn anything on the opposite side, but its been something I've worked on all my life (shooting pool/billiards, spinning sticks/staff...) that it isn't TOO bad for me.. it will be a good challenge for you! The balance will come, I promise!

            X.

So, I can hoop both ways, but I can't type in the dark.

The rule in my class is, every time you drop it, reverse the current. I find it takes longer to learn on my non-dominant current (clockwise), but when I do learn a trick that way, my body transfers the knowledge overnight. If I learn a trick right-handed (counterclockwise), I have just as much work to do to learn it the other way.

I say definitely take a break! The body needs time to heal, and once it has, you will be less likely to bruise so badly next time. However, if you keep hooping over an area that is experiencing acute inflammation then it will take longer to heal.

Instead, try gentle yoga poses, or hand and off-the-body hooping, and spend time honoring your body for learning something new. You won't have to rest for long.

i hoop all the time, yet at burning man i hooped so much more than usual, and i got some of the most awful deep black bruises from my knees up to my shoulders. people kept asking me if i fell off an art car or something. by friday i had to stop hooping for a day or so because while it didn't hurt, it looked totally gross and was really ruining all my playa outfits ;)

      still, totally worth it. :)
