Gosh, I guess I have gotten to know quite a few of the male hoopers out there... and I would dare say there are more than you know about and the population is growing exponentially.

Khan, Rich, Rob Mills, Baxter, Victorio, Dave (chicago), David (knoxville), Lewis Meyers, Max, Lucian, Rainbow Michael, Robbie, Vaughn, Philo, Fred Aspen, Geoffery, Kimowan, stephan, to name a few.

While it's obvious that it is heavily female dominated, I believe that male hoopers take a whole different approach to the hoop. I have never looked at any male hooper and thought, gosh, they look girly. Rather, I have often thought, wow, I love they're unique approach and energy they bring to the hoop. It is very unique.

Good luck in getting connected to the male hooping world.

I'm the only one I know in my lil tribe here in nc--lots of my pals are burners but most can't hoop very well. I love it and wish I could practice all day. My kids dig it, too. What I struggle with is style... I like very much the HoopPath which is a bit more masculine but I've been thru the dvd twice and have learned as much as I can w/o hitting up a class (too far away) or a retreat. And yourself?

Lucian, you have no problem looking like a man when hooping. Nothing girly about your slick moves.

I love to see men hoop. They tend to have such strength and speed. It's really energising to watch. And of course you all have grace too. I love how Khan will hoop with strength and speed and the utmost grace. And that he'll dress up to incorporate his clothing into the dance. Men have a different take on hooping. I always get the feeling they are less likely to want to collect tricks for the sake of tricks and instead to learn those that enable them to do what they want to do.

It's not about the actuality of looking feminine that gets people....its the fear of it mattering to someone else, lol. And lets face ti, big guys like myself tend to
generally dont like to jiggle in front of people any more than we absolutely HAVE to!!!!! lol...It's still a thought in my mind when I hoop in front of people....but my pride in the skills I have developed and the joy hooping brings to me overcomes all that for me.
As for lookin girly....I personally hoop with vigor at times and with grace at others...and like a complete mess from time to time too (boy, when you mess up once sometimes it turns into a streak that just seems impossable to overcome!)!!! Girly or not, I'm having fun!!!
I am still a beginer with only a year under my belt...but I am quickly picking up new things now that spinning "clicked" in my head...or betwen there and my body...or wherever it clicked!!!

I love my hooper boy (see Jeremiah, top of thread)!

Everytime we're at a festival and he lights up his fire hoop, I always hear some ladies in the audience say, "oooh... a male hooper! yay!". It's sexy, and it can look very masculine...

I see some (but certainly not all) male hoopers shying away from core hooping... does the wiggling make ya feel girly? Cause it looks hot. Just sayin'.

Other male hoopers not mentioned: Soyboy, Stefan... who else are we forgetting?
I saw a good handful of newbie-lookin' male hooper at Playa Del Fuego a couple of weeks ago, too!

Hey there! Seattle is lucky enough to have several male hoopers (myself included). I know what you mean, in thinking about masculinity and hooping. It's always been an interesting question, since the hoop community - and instruction, as others have mentioned - is definitely more oriented toward women. But some of the guys out there are pretty amazing, and it doesn't take much to make a performance look "masculine". Yes, you're moving your hips, but I don't think the girls mind it all that much. :)

If you've got ideas you want to share or consider, feel free to post - it's a topic that definitely bears discussion!

Cheers!

Raises hand. Male hooper here.

I wanted to up for a local hoop aerobics class with a hoopgirl certified instructor and was told it was geared for just females and they felt they had a safe environment to explore and learn in that way. It hurt a little because the instructor is a friend of mine but a few days later she says come on, why not. She had just really not wanted me to feel uncomfortable learning the 'booty bump' and such.

Well, I took the class last night. I loved it. I really like using the hoop for pure exercise as well as expression. Plus I like learning new things that might sound basic but I've never tried before.

And I can tell you. The booty bump is not easy..and mostly impossible spinning the opposite direction. And booty hooping? I used muscles I didn't know I had.

I am going again next week.

Did I get off topic? Hard to focus on this while at work.

Anyway, I am always interested in male hoopers and how to actually look like a male while hooping. There are some real badass male hoopers out there. But I guess it boils to what I learned from Baxter in his Hoop Path workshop..."if it feels good, that's all that matters" (or something like that).

ok well all hoopers are hot!

i love baxter's video here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Odw_H90C-6c really made me see a different direction that anyone can take their hooping, really giving a different feeling than the "mainstream" hooping. (not that there's anything wrong with the mainstream style as many people tend toward similar moods/movements, as long as it's authentic to who you are :P)

this is a subject that seems to pop up periodically. i've often wondered about making a male hoopers tribe but that seems kind of separatist.

it is a curious thing about the hoop though; gender isn't really much of an issue with other flow-tools in that none of them seem to have a majority of one or the other gender in the same way that hooping has such a distinct female majority.

anyway, hi!
