Finally got my links to be functional... (thanks for your help, Ariel.. turned out to be weirder than I imagined, local techy friend figured it out..)

So, you can see what I've called them here... Matrix came from a trick video on hooping.org, and I *think* this is what people talk about when they say "Orbit"... the rest are mostly just descriptive names that I popped on.
Are there other names already in use for these? Shall we work up functional language labels (Highway OnRamp becoming "horizontal hoop passing with a left overhead loop, behind the back (or under the leg) pass, followed by a right overhead loop"? Guh!

OH! And, going along with the grip discussion in another thread, does anyone commonly do any of these moves with a different grip?

Thu, December 29, 2005 - 11:42 AMOh yeah, credit where credit is due: Most of those are me, the other hooper is Ali Bryant, and the video was done by Philip Stephen!

Re: Name These Tricks!
Thu, December 29, 2005 - 12:13 PMThe original Matrix was actually a little bit different, going all the way around. I know the video is for shit (making it hard to tell WHAT'S going on) but here it is again:
www.hooping.org/archives/v...cetrick.mpg
I'd call your version of the matrix more a "headless shoulder hoop." :)
Love the Orbit vid! It's great!! -

Re: Name These Tricks!
Thu, December 29, 2005 - 2:31 PMCloser! Kandice does a full rotation all the way around her back, ducking completely out of the hoop. It's a wacky, wacky trick. God knows I've never been able to come close to duplicating it! -

Re: Name These Tricks!
Fri, December 30, 2005 - 12:53 PMHi everyone! I think the naming of moves has been long overdue! Just a divergence real quick; I was there the day we coined Kandice's move the "Matrix" it is a wacky move.. It may help to get it to visualize the move in the matrix when neo is leaned back dodging bullets(which is what this move kind of looks like in it's full splendor). Your head never actually goes back inside the hoop once it is rotating around your upperarms. Basically your head leans side toside then BACK t get that leaned back :matriix" look.. hope this helps!
anyway on to naming! I want to share the names Christabel and I have been useing and maybe everyone else can do the same? Starting with the tricks posted by Xta:
First off I think there is a distinction to be made between tricks and places you are hooping on your body. For example: I think the first video is simply horizontal hooping on the upperarm, not really a "trick" what does everyone else think about this? Not to belittle the skill needed to hoop everyplace on your body, but I think it will be helpful in classification to make distinctions such as these.
So,
1st vid: Horizontal hooping on the upper arm
2nd vid: We do this move with the hoop rolling across widespread arms and call it "the Eagle" roll, we also do a move called "the Camel" roll which is similar to what you are doing in the video only the hoop rolls DOWN your back instead of across the top. Maybe a "side" camel or a "back" camel?
3rd vid: Corkscrew
4th vid: the video shows what I would call a "back elbow pass with a neck transition". maybe it could be broken down to a Back elbow pass, a Forward elbow pass (passing in front of your body) and a Full elbow pass(passing with the elbows all the way around)?
5th vid:I don't think we have a name for this one but it is definitly in the family of "hand passes". Maybe it could be hand pass under leg? Not very poetic, I know... anyone?
6th vid: This one is really cute! We call it the "school yard hop" because it is a very commonly seen hoop move done by children in schools.
7th vid: We call this the "Orbital" in the video it is rotating orbital. There is also the standing orbital, which is the same move only you stay in one place and pass it around your back. There is also the overhead orbital, which is Christabel's specialty (I can only get a couple of rotations).
8th vid: "revolving door"
9th vid: hmmm... I know it is macabre but how about the "noose" or it could be simply an angled neck rotation..
<whew> Sorry for the novel! I love this process and I can't wait to hear everyone's creative ideas!

Re: Name These Tricks!
Fri, December 30, 2005 - 1:22 PM5. I know hand pass is kinda bland, but I can offer my name for the same move only passed in the front while kicking the leg up. We call it the scissor pass (because usually we will do it repeatedly alternating legs.)
Anah, I really like the names you use for them. The only one I'm having a hard time with is the Orbital. I have always used Orbit for that other one where the hoop is going the opposite direction...you know so it's actually going around your body when it's spinning? and your head kind of gets out of the way as it comes around--sometimes you use both hands. I know I've seen it on videos. The one that's in Xta's video is kind of like staff spinning and doesn't ever really seem to "orbit" I have also used "vortex" for the same trick that I have called orbit, so maybe one of them could be vortex and one could be orbital. Thoughts on this? I REALLY dig corkscrew. I've called that one the samurai based on a post on The Hoop Path, but I'm liking corkscrew a lot. Thank you so much for your ideas everyone! -

Re: Name These Tricks!
Fri, December 30, 2005 - 5:23 PMI love this move. For all of us who have been hooping for a while, achieving this pass was a real moment in our early hoop histories. when you can pull this one off you hear your friends start saying, "wow. you're really getting good." this is not however what The Hoop Path defines as Samurai. i won't clog this thread up with what Samurai is, but there is a new post on The Hoop Path which kinda, sorta defines it. (i was sick when i wrote it, sick when i proofed it, so i'm not sure of anything really.) Xta, you're lovely. -

Re: Name These Tricks!
Fri, December 30, 2005 - 9:48 PM<blush> I just yelled to my roommates "Someone just called me lovely!" <grin>
Heh.. plain ole' neck hooping-to-waist hooping was the first thing I did, that made everyone go "oooooooh"! (of course, two minutes later they were going "ouch!" as they tried it themselves...
For your Hoop Path definition of Samurai, it talks about one point of contact on the hoop - but am I correct that it is not restricting the number of body parts contacting that point? When I do this (if we ARE talking about video #3 up there, or am I confused?) I sometimes wind up using my left forearm to achieve the pass around my waist to my right hand again, instead of gripping it in my left hand... I figure it makes the move look a bit more mysterious :)
I find the Hoop Path concept interesting, and I'm gonna be checking out more of your posts and info over there... my spirituality isn't fully involved when I'm hooping, just the pleasure of freedom through play, but I'm curious to learn more about the spiritual aspects you mention!

Re: Name These Tricks!
Sat, December 31, 2005 - 1:13 AMyou're not confused. i'm talking about number 3. when i was watching your video it wasn't playing so smoothly. now, i can see your motion a little better. i think the confusion is over my use of Point. "Point" refers to the Point of contact the hoop makes with you, the hooper at a specific moment within a hoop's revolution. Just as when you core hoop, the Point of contact is at one spot in one moment. you may be hooping around your waist, but the hoop isn't making contact with your whole waist within the same instant. The Point is travelling around you. when it comes to Samurai, only one hand can hold the point. if i stand holding the hoop with two hands, then i'm not in Samurai, i'm in Two Point. i would also be in two point if i was gripping the hoop at one point, while another pointed rested on say, my shoulder. the key requirements of Samurai is that the current and revolution must be controlled from One point. at any moment within the revolution i should be able change currents. (current=direction). so when you drop the hoop to your forearm, then, at that precise moment, could you change it's current from only that point? probably not. (i'm assuming you don't have really long bionic arm hair that can catch, hold, and pivot a hoop back the other way. and if you do, well, that's pretty baddasss.) i agree with you about not gripping the hoop for this move. unless, you're going for pure Samurai, grippy hands are usually clumsy hands. fingers around the hoop tend to get in the way of the hoop. as one gets used to the feeling of the point rolling around their hands, arms, etc., one will find that a full grip is usually overkill for guiding it through a pass. probably more than you wanted, but i missed my chance to teach my classes this week (holiday travel), and i guess i have a lot of pent up teachiness.

Re: Name These Tricks!
Sat, December 31, 2005 - 11:39 AMFun names like corkscrew, school yard hop, orbits, etc, describe a whole movement or series in a nutshell - these capture a visual image for me. Others like matrix, samurai, highway on ramp, a little less so, but they're still fun.
I like Anna's descriptions overall. #1 isn't shoulder hooping which I feel would be with the arm down - definitely more tricky. It also involves what I've think Christabel referred to as a 'duck out' with the head (a precursor to learning true shoulder hooping?).
Here are a few suggestions for key words that have multitudes of variations:
Passes - one body part to another
Rolls - using the outer hoop to travel across the body
Swings - griping with hand in one position like poi
Stalls - hoop held in one place on the body by hoop momentum
Hooping - rolling with the inside of the hoop - hand, arm, leg
Freezes - stopping hoop motion
Spins - movement about a hoop's center line
Bounces - momentary contact of floor or body
Step or Jump-through - body passes through hoop, feet leave ground
Throws - self explanatory
To these we can refer to:
body part used - hand, leg, waist, etc
body position - bent at waist, laying down, etc
hoop orientation to ground - horizontal or vertical
hoop orientation to body - left or right, high or low
the setup or initiation of trick - what must happen first
transitions - moments between movements in series
And specifics like:
hoop rotation direction
movement direction in relation to body
body movement
Let me know if I got any names confused. -

Re: Name These Tricks!
Sat, December 31, 2005 - 4:55 PMWow! That's totally a list that I've been hoping to see for MONTHS... great start to the vocab! The only thing I see that should be added is hand position (see other discussion thread for grip stuff...)
I find names in general to be a problem, just with people's differing images of what an orbit is, etc.. (the names on my video clips aren't things I actually USE, I tend to go to demo mode, or at least visual language, to talk about moves.. I have a background in ASLs, so it feels more natural to me) so developing this language to describe what we are doing feels important.
Now, what about Anah's mention of the difference between just hooping on a body part, VS doing a trick... how do y'all define "trick" vs "move" vs "hooping"..?
And, happy New YEars, for those of you celebrating it tonight! Be well and be safe!

Re: Name These Tricks!
Tue, January 17, 2006 - 11:26 AM3: This is very similar to my Whirlwind, but the motion is constant, passing from one hand to the other above your head and behind your back, never stopping to let the hoop do a full rotation ala the right hand in the vid. I dig Corkscrew for this variation.

Re: Name These Tricks!
Tue, January 30, 2007 - 5:47 AMWhew! Thanks Christa! I got 'em working. :-) I'm very happy. Now I can finally put some names to the tricks I've been learning about. Question: any tips for faster, more fluid corkscrews? -

Re: Name These Tricks!
Tue, January 30, 2007 - 1:48 PMIt has been discussed quite a bit in a thread calling it "Beam Me Up" - if you use the search function (sorry, I'm in lame-mouse mode so multiple windows is a struggle right now) within this tribe, it should pop right up.
After you read those tips, if you've still got questions, add them to that thread to bump it back to the top of the active threads and I'm sure we'll all work to help you out :)
