*Big* meditation hoop?

I'm interested in making a really big hoop, a la those at Yeongju (Gyeongju), South Korea on the mountain in "Clare and Lizzi's big hoop adventure" as seen here www.youtube.com/watch

The hoops look to be 7+ feet tall but they're also of greater girth. I strolled around Home Depot but they didn't even have 160 psi to look at this time of year. There didn't seem to be anything else bendy to work with other than PEX, and it's not thick enough for this project.

Any guesses what those hoops in SK are made of, and what might be holding them together? I just thought one might be nice for a meditative hoop (in the driveway). I know the girls were having fun, and getting bruised up in the process, but look at the woman in the background... she had it. I have plenty of natural padding and common sense to take care of me, and I think I can handle this... now if I can just make the hoop. :-]

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

hummm...i've never seen tubing of that caliber, but i know lowe's carries 160 psi that is 1" diameter. the hoops are way heavier than the 100 psi 3/4" hoops i'm used to. you can also maybe try plumbing supply stores. good luck:)

Hadn't thought of plumbing supply specialty stores... hmmm, wonder if we still have any since Lowe's/HD moved in? Guess I'll be finding out this week! Thanks for the input, Jen! :-)

I can make you one. I've made a couple that size before. But I use 195psi white material, not the black stuff. I suppose I could get the black, if you like...

Tedward, thank you for the generous offer but I suspect shipping alone from CA to MO would give the Scot in me a heart attack. I do appreciate any info on the materials to make it here, though. I do like making hoops. :D

There is at least one plastic tubing manufacturer around here I think - before I "upgraded" my OS I had links that I failed to save; I'll just have to google for them again. Color doesn't matter much. Is there a brand name on the pipe/tubing I should be on the look-out for? What kind of connectors do you use?

Again, thanks for the offer to build, that is kind.

Hey Terri..I get 160psi at Tractor Supply Co.(www.tractorsupply.com) I checked their website and they do have stores in MO...maybe there's one close to you? They have it year-round here, not just in warm months. Good luck!

Thanks for the source, Herbee! There is a TSC near here, I'll give them a try. I do want to make smaller hoops for hand hooping so at least can get that bit done. Thanks! :D

I checked and the "fattest" hoop I have is my 1-3/8" OD PEX, it's my smallest diameter hoop (I used one PEX pipe to make it, 10-ft length I think) but it's heavy, and used strictly for waist hooping, pretty much when I want to wear myself out in a short time! This I think is not nearly the girth tubing I have in mind, but I can't imagine those monsters in SK being this dense a material... ! I have more searching to do... Maybe TSC has something that'll work! :-)

OK, I am moving closer in the right direction. Today got to Lowe's and they had a roll of what is marked 1 1/2 " SilverLine Max-Flo 80 psi... it was thickest diameter I've seen so I got it. Also bought (three) 1-1/2" couplers; I believe I will get at least three hoops from this roll.

It was a little tricky getting this roll home in the minivan. But I did, using a side door. :-]

This is not as girth-y as the ones on the mountain nor as rigid probably, but compared to what *I* had before they are of greater girth (1-1/2" inner diameter, outer diameter is closer to 1-3/8" which doesn't sound like much either in my mind but it really is bigger) and quite a bit heavier.

The first cut I made created a hoop that was taller than my garage ceiling which is 8 feet, but the hoop was not round and I didn't much like the way it felt hooping - sort of floppy feeling. I took the ends apart and let it rest to see where it would naturally create a more circular shape, and ended up cutting off about three feet.

Now it is about 7 feet tall on end and hoops pretty nicely. I don't know how it looks hooping as far as centrifugal warpage, though... being 80 psi I wonder if it's a wee bit soft that way. But that's what I had available :-]. The connector is *tight* btw.

I couldn't resist seeing if I could lift it above waist, and I could. Super slow-mo highway ramp and beam-me-up were both successful. I think I'll skip any vertical hoop moves, though. ;-]

So, although my new hoop is not as large or thick as the ones on the mountain, it's bigger and thicker than what I had before and I'm happy.

Incidentally I note numbers are still not my strong point - 1-1/2" inner diameter, and outer diameter is 1-3/4", *not* 1-3/8". :-]

I thought the connector was tight, as it was really *really* hard to put on. But it is slowly coming apart as I use it (there's a lot of force pulling at it). When I put it snug it back up, I'll duct tape it and hope that keeps it together better.

Sorry for the double post... the first time I tried to post the results, it said the connection had timed out, and I even checked to see if the response had posted and it didn't look like it had... so I backed up, copied, tweaked, and reposted, and there it is... twice... in all its glory.

Hey Terri, I'm glad you found some tubing that's working for you! LOL about not doing any vertical hooping with your new hoop! Maybe sometime in the future you can post a video for all of us to see!
      Happy Huge Hoop Hooping!

Finally did it... short but adequate. ;-]

"Beam me up" will have to wait until after surgery for right shoulder impingement... but I'm certain I'll be able to do it then. I sure do miss it. :'-(

But this hoop is a good workout to build up shoulder strength nonetheless and I'll be using it more often in preparation. :-)

            Very nice groove!

But are you sure swinging that huge hoop around your neck isn't going to cause an injury. I have a large groove hoop (not quite as big as yours) and it is made out of the 3/4 inch inside diameter and I wouldn't attempt neck hooping with it. I do love using it, especially to reggae music.

lol, good point... I don't do that move for very long, but my neck is still fine this morning. :-)

If anybody is in the Kansas City area or has a way to get here, I still have tubing left over - conservative guess is 60 continuous feet based on 4 coils in the roll that are over 5 feet high. I know two more hoops can be made from this left over roll, but really I only need one megahoop. :-)

Asking $25 for the roll. I'm hoping to find the connectors I bought too... I know they're here somewhere :-)

Nice! I saw this video when they made it, it's awesome.

I have Clare on a couple of my friendslists here online, I'll see if I can get her to come tell us where the hoop came from. :)

I haven't read thru all the comments here so I don't know if this has been covered, but in my experience, Loews has a much better selection (than Home Depot) of the kinds of tubing you'd need to make all kinds of hoops. If you have one near you, check. Sometimes they're out of one kind or another, but I have seen 1" and greater diameters there. I've personally never bought anything thicker than 3/4" but I've thought about it....the weight and slow movement could be fun for teaching, and for deep belly work. :)

    Well, Hi.
Ter'i brought this thread to my attention. Looks like I joined the party a little late.
I honestly couldn't tell you what the hoops were made of. It felt to me like drainpipe plastic. I've not had a lot of experience with larger PSI tubing, but this stuff felt VERY inflexible, like it was filled with something. The hoops were also fantastically heavy, and really unwieldy.
Glad you found the right tubing, and glad I inspired something! =) Shame I couldn't be more helpful.

lol, the fact that you put your vid up was helpful enough for me, Clare - thank you so much for giving me the idea! Even went so far as to look up the hooping song you sang... and I like your version better. :-)

I know my hoop isn't nearly on par with what y'all were working with but it'll do for me - even if I had found the same pipe, the hoop wouldn't have fit in the garage... well, not without sacrificing somebody's car or motorcycle space anyway.

That little lady in the background of your vid had it all worked out, didn't she? :-)

Thanks again for posting that video, Clare!

        You don't like Plastic Bertrand?

I think your hoop is probably better suited to your purpose. Having watched that video again, I'm reminded of how heavy the thing was - I'm not a light person, and the sheer momentum of that hoop was pulling me all over the shop.
I'm convinced that the ajumma woman in the background had a lighter hoop! Haha. She came up to us after, actually, and told us she hooped 1000 rotations in each direction every day. After climbing the mountain to get there.

The slow rotations do feel great though, don't they? Happy hooping.

Plastric Bertrand is fine, I just liked yours better - it's more organic, very nice. :-]

I intended to have a heavy hoop just for waist hooping, but didn't find pipe heavy enough yet flexible enough to get that so just worked with what I could find, and couldn't resist seeing what moves I could do with it - as you can see, not many, lol.

Um, I'm more "not light" than you so... 1000 rotations each direction each day huh? I'll have to work on that, maybe I'll get her figure with that regimen. ;-]

I do like the slow rotations and the strong pull. I would have loved to have one of those whopper hoops tugging me about! :-]

Well done Terri, that looks like great fun. I bet it feels really good. And when you are swinging it around you off body it's really tugging you by the look of it. I love it. But I second the neck advice. It's too big for that. Keep it on your shoulders.
