hula hoop hustler?

Ok I have a dilemma, there is a little local festival here based around the 60-70’s. They have dance competitions and stuff and one of them is for hula hooping. I am basically the only hooper in the area minus about 2 other people. Would it be wrong to enter the hula hoop competition? I think it’s going to be grandmas in poodle skirts and kids primarily. The boyfriend said that’d make me a hustler if I did. What do you guys think?

ha. i guess that is *kinda* unfair, you don't want to make the old people and little kids cry do u ? :P

what about going and giving some pointers to the contestants, a little lesson before hand to make the contest more interesting?

I thought about it, and maybe bring my good hoops because I know they are using crappy ones. But organizers tend to feel insulted if you interfere with things around here. Might just stay away but a hoop contest in my tiny town is hard to resist! But yeah it would be sorta unfair. Maybe I can just go for giggles.

Its not unfair - enter the contest for giggles and good luck. It will only encourage the kids to get better if you show up and do your best. And then maybe next year you will have some real competition.

The 70's was the era that invented the Hustle. I say go for it. It will open a whole new world of hooping to them, especially if you take adult sized hoops to share. And it is a dance competition. Show me anyone else who dances with a hoop. Go expand their worldview. And have fun.

Why not contact the organizers and see if you can be a judge?

If you are worried about competing, the judge thing is a good idea. and maybe they'll let you put on a hoop demo and show them all how it's done!

The idea of "judging" would suck the fun right out of it for me. You mean I don't get to hoop AND I have to judge people? One of the things I don't like about competition is the whole "judging" thing. (Not to mention that it creates a lot more losers than winners. In my hoop experience, everyone is a winner.) I recently fascilitated an event and they wanted me to create some hoop competitions and I flat out refused and told them why. I mean, why does everything have to be a competition? I showed them pretty clearly that there are lots of ways to have fun without introducing the aspect of competition, especially in hooping, which is a largely solitary endeavor anyway. (And one that individuals find enough of their own ways to introduce aspects of competition into.)

If it helps, we had a similar event here. I went and I took my hoop and a few others. Sure enough they had a bunch of those cheap toy store hoops and none for grownups. I had many more people hooping than would have otherwise, especially grown ups, which makes both grownups and kids happy. The people loved it, the organizers loved it and I had fun too. In the end, their goal is to make people happy. If you help them meet that goal while expanding the horizons of everyone there, what's not to love? (Especially if your participation is free too!) Hooping has changed in the last four decades. You're just helping bring people into the new era. Plus, they wanted to get people to come out and play. You came out to play.

Finally, you said it is a dance competition. If these folks don't know that hoopdance exists, you are not only expanding their worldview but acting as an ambassador for our art. If you don't want to participate in the competition dealeo (which, again, competition -- bleah) offer to do a hoopdance demonstration.

No matter how you choose to do it, this is an opportunity to share something you love. That's what the world needs. I hope you will.

Good point with the hoopdance idea. Everything does seem to be a competition sometimes and people lose the fun of it I think. On the other side of things I have a funny image of the American Idol people judging a regular hoop competition. I am lacking coffee today though.

You should enter the contest! Not to make the old ladies and kids cry, but think about how many people you might inspire to hoop! I think it will be a beautiful thing if you approach it with good intentions (as Im sure you will)!

i would bring a couple of hoops and do some hooping afterwards, but i wouldn't enter the competition. a hula-hooping contest at something like this is usually a "let's see who can keep the hoop up" thing, not a "let's bust out some rockstar hooping" thing... the fun comes in watching everyone struggle in a silly way. having a "professional" in there hooping would put all the focus on you instead of on the event... it would be like a professionally-trained opera singer entering a little local karaoke contest.

you can still inspire everyone and have a blast by hanging back and then busting out your moves after the contest... everyone will be all hoop-happy, and then they'll see you dancing and be like "whoa! that's a million times better than the hoop contest we just did!"

I would not enter if it were up to me i don't think it would be fair.and if i was to i would make sure i had the same little hoops as everyone else.

Most of the hula hoop competitions i have seen have been about keeping the hoop up for the longest rather than hoop dance and that kind of thing and are more in the spirit of some silly fun than a serious competition.

I do like the idea of taking hoops and letting people use them after the competition to show the other side of hula hooping.

i agree with what some others have said:
    you SHOULD enter!
-you will inspire others by showing them what is possible
-the contest measures prowess, talent, and rhythm: your having these is not a crime
-you can invite some cute kids from the contest to jam with you on stage at the end
-you can be gracious by not breaking out ALL your moves, but just doing a fun trick or two for the kids
-since the theme is retro, you can dress funky and play the whole thing off as campy fun rather than grandstanding (not that you would, you just don't want others to read you that way.)

    GO FOR IT

Ok, I called the organizer of the event and she said that if I want to enter the competition I have to use their hoops. But I am welcome to bring my hoops and play. I dunno if I can hoop with a store bought hoop, I haven't picked up one in so long. So I might go slightly in costume and get some people to play my hoops instead. We'll see how it goes, thanks for the help my fellow hoopers!
