Sue your response was brilliant. It definitely reflects my own experience. I was a yo yo dieter for many years. In fact, back in the day, I struggled with eating disorders. I was uncomfortable in my own skin and unappreciative of my own body. Hooping snuck up on me and changed my life. I don't do exercise. I do fun though. And hooping is fun! Show me any other exercise that makes you giggle!

It has also changed the way I eat. Because I want to hoop and hoop and hoop, I eat more high energy foods and a lot lot lot less crap. I've also started doing yoga so that I don't get sore from all my hooping, so I don't get injured, so I can do back rollovers. All these changes are because of hooping. None of them were related to dieting or trying to change my body. None of them were conscious. The results, though, are that I've transformed my body from the inside out! My stomach is flatter and harder than it's ever been. All those attributes I worked for and fretted over in my 20's have poured into my life in abundance in my 40's ... without me ever looking or trying. To me, that's the truly amazing part about all of this.

I am so grateful to the hoop and to all of you -- my hooping mentors, friends and teachers. You helped me along the way. My life is better because of you. Thank you! You have touched my heart! It's much healthier now due to your influence.

So I agree with Sue completely. Don't sully this special experience by thinking about calories. That will only drain the fun right out of it. Just have fun! You'll find that all you want comes to you without effort or thinking. The magic is in the Fun.

Happy Healthy Hooping my friends!

I feel like hooping is tricking you into exercising because it's so fun. I like to just turn on a movie or some tv something or other and hoop for the duration. I always feel like I'm still hooping when I stop.. like when you get off a trampoline hehe :) and I like that ;)

That's exactly why I decided to give hooping a try. I remember how fun my hula hoop was when I was a kid. I am looking for activity not exercise. Just lucky that activity is exercise in the fun way. No way I'm doing calastenics or jazzercise because it's not fun to me. I have to have fun and stay off the couch!

It's good that you want to be active. But looking at hooping as an exercise may turn you off from it. Getting active isthe most important thing. But just keep doing active things that you love, and you won't even realize you are birning calories until your jeans don't fit anymore! Good luck!

Hi, don't worry, it definitely counts as exercise! From the first time you drop the hoop to the practicing of really fast spins, it's exercise. But you somehow don't notice it if you have music on at the same time.

For me music has been integral to hooping and I've loved every minute of it. And it's almost impossible to eat or drink while hooping, so feel the urge for a snack, hoop instead!!!

Have fun.

Hi! *waves*

This is a very interesting thread. I'm new here and to hooping. I have my first hoop and dvd on order, hopefully it'll be here this week. Anyway, I got it because it looked like a lot of fun, and it's moving so it should count as exercise. I think anything you do that is movement counts, and I hate traditional exercise. I'm looking to lose a lot of weight, but not just from the hooping. The hooping is just another way to keep me off my couch! LOL

Thanks everyone for such great input. I think this is going to be a great tribe!

Absolutely! The miracle is easier.

I felt a bit like that. I got my first hoop and felt a bit ridiculous and decided I wanted to look better for my hoop! (must be mad) and that was the incentive I needed to exercise more and eat a bit less and it worked. My first video I'm quite embarrassed to watch, but I'm better now.

I lost 20lbs hooping 2hrs twice a week but i also ran once a week and did yoga twice a week. I wanted to lose weight, but my goal was more about becoming more athletic (so i could be a better hooper) It took me three or four months to lose the weight, which i think is a healthy time period. losing to much to fast is dangerous and unhealthy. I did not diet but try to make healthy choices. That was last year and I haven't put the weight back on and I'm not good at working out that consistanly but I love hooping and will always do that no matter what. People at my job keep asking me what i've done to lose weight and keep it off and I tell them, exersise, but people would rather have some miracle diet type answer.

Hi .. well I dont know if I can give you specifics about number of times a week and durations because mine has varied. Sometimes I hoop for several hours sometimes 10 minutes a couple times a day ... just too eratic to give you specifics...

However I have experienced quite a bit of weight loss that was directly related to hooping. This past week I hit my 20 pound mark since August. Not only have I lost the pounds, I have dropped 2 dress sizes and lost almost 5 inches of my waist and hips porportionately. My arms are more tone and my body is certainly more loose.

I do agree with the others, it shouldnt be the main focus but I have to tell you it broke a 3 year weight plateau with me that the treadmill nor counting calories ever did. I do disagree with a little that was stated above..

Larger and heaver hoops are great for toning and building strength. Especially for arms and wrist for off the body hooping, however your smaller lighter hoops actually work your body harder and will be a cardo workout. Because lighter hoops are more difficult to keep in motion, you actually have to push your body twice as hard to keep them spinning.

There is a specific heart target rate with cardio exercises that burns fat loss.... to fast of a heart rate and your strengthing you lungs and endurance, but not really promoting fat loss. This target rate is different for everybody and I would suggest that if you really want to loose weight, regardless of what method, that you seek the advise and plan from a certified trainer and/or your doctor. They should be able to help determine this heart rate for you and then.. you can use that information with your hooping to stay in the fat burning zone with your targeted heart rate. ( hope this makes sense )

I will note, because I believe alot of my weight was due to chronic emotional stress.... that once I eliminated the source of my stress, started hooping, felt better, gained confidence and strength, my weight has just been melting off my body with little effort.

Like all the others before me said, have fun, keep moving/hooping and stay positive. You will find the weight comes off easier than you thought it would.

I'm sure if you hooped for at least 30mins 3 times a week vigorously mixing off body and on body moves you'll find that you'll lose weight or tone up or both, but I can't say for certain as I'm not using it as a form of weightloss per se.

I found that hooping worked well as 'toning' exercise more than weight loss for me. I lost maybe 5 pounds in the first few months, but I also went down two pants sizes. I usually went for an hour at a time, 2-3 times a week. I'd say half of that was body hooping (trying shoulder hooping and knee hooping, and lots of booty bump), and half off body. But I was usually still 'dancing' with my legs and body during off body maneuvers. Like any exercise, I would do it to the point of sweating and breathing deeply (but not panting), and then I'd keep going until I wasn't enjoying it any more.

I seriously think half of my toning came from running after / bending over several times a minute to retrieve the hoop. :)

oh don't get me wrong, I like to move with my hoop... tricks, dance.. all the like.. My main question was if anyone has specifically used hooping for a specific weight loss regimen. I have fun with my hoop, and yes, I let go.. I'm just wondering if someone has had results by "hooping this many hours, this way, at certain time lengths per day.. " etc.. and has had it work for actual weight loss. I'm not trying to segregate hooping from fun to a form of exercise.. but I'm just curious of other's actual experience with losing weight from hooping. I appreciate the encouragement to dance and hoop and have fun and "not think about losing weight".. but right now, I HAVE to think about losing weight, and I love hooping.. and I'd like to know if others have had experience doing it this way.

I agree 100% with Sue. Weight loss should be secondary to hoop dancing. I'll be completely honest, I did start hooping because I thought it'd be a fun way to burn cals, and don't get me wrong, it is.But, as soon as I learned how to actually hoop and saw you could do tricks and dance, my whole perspective changed. Now I'm all about the dance and less about the weight loss. I have noticed I'm a bit more toned now but for me it doesn't really matter because I'm more interested in learning a new trick and perfecting what I know now and having so much fun. So as long as you have fun and do the dance you'll be more comfortable with your body and you'll notice a difference as well :)

I should have said, I was quite a bit over-weight! I still am over-weight, but nowhere near as bad. I'm hoping more is on the way off, but it's not my focus. My focus is the way I feel when I hoop, which is pretty good.

I do sometimes find I'm frustrated with the hoop at the start of practice, but not by the end.

First off, Sue that is an awesome weight loss! I'm pretty sure two stone is close to 30 pounds and that is seriously kick ass.

I started hooping, for the whole kind of zen like state people talk about . I feel a lot calmer after I hoop and happy. You can't get mad at a hula hoop. And lately I've been working up a sweat. With school (go college!) and work (yah money!) it's hard to find time, but I try to do at least 10 minutes a day. And it's not so much that I've noticted any weight loss (could also be my crappy eating right now) but I have noticed that my stomach is starting to seem more toned which is awesome, since that's one of the hardest places for women.

I'd say forget you're trying to burn calories and try to have and try new tricks and you'll have calorie burn without really thinking about it.

I think that's the wrong way to look at it. Anyway, different people burn calories at different rates, and different people hoop at different speeds, and a heavy hoop will take more energy than a lighter one, as will a bigger diameter to a smaller one. Tricks practice is often much more energetic than straight waist hooping.

So, forget that quantifiable model and simply learn to dance with your hoop to music you love. Do some off body hooping, some on. Skip with the hoop, turn with the hoop. Hoop fast and slow, learn some lifts and jumps, learn to chest hoop - that really makes you sweat! Then if you do some of that everyday, be it 10 minutes, 30 minutes or 1 hour, it will make a significant impact on your body. Leave the hoop accessible so that you can grab it and dance every time something you like comes on the radio.

I have lost 2 stone since July through hooping. I hoop a lot, ie, most days for some indefinite period, and because it made me feel better about myself I don't comfort eat or eat from boredom. I am not and have not been on a diet, I haven't cut anything out, but I'd say I probably eat less volume now and exercise more.

The key is keeping it up. Therefore you have to be motivated by something other than weight loss, ie enjoying the dancing, enjoying the music, wanting to learn more tricks and pushing yourself to practice to achieve that. The weight loss benefit is secondary to getting much fitter and having fun.

I hope that helps.
