Hello all! I'm very new to hooping, as in on a whim I went out last night and this morning and gathered all my supplies and made my own hoop. I just spent the past few minutes hooping for the first time in over twenty years ;)
My question is, my belly button is pierced with a barbell and at my current level of skill (if it could be called that) the hoop passes over my belly button with each rotation. It feels a little weird and I've always had issues having anything around that area... does this go away? Is anyone else pierced? Is it something that will.. er... toughen? Or will I learn to move the hoop around my body enough that it won't irritate that area as much?
Thanks!! Sorry if this is written confusingly, heh.

Re: Piercings and hooping
Sun, July 10, 2005 - 12:04 PMI was wondering when someone would bring this up. Well...I've been hooping for (almost) 2 years and have several piercings including navel and nipples. Hooping does affect piercings, probably differently for each person.
Personally, hooping hurts my nipples during certain hooping tricks and hooping w/o a shirt is unthinkable. For nipples you can put electrical tape over them (fetish-style) for protection, you can even use the same tape for your hoop to match.
As far as my navel goes, I had it for over 10 years and recently it got really unhappy and I decided to take it out. Was it due to the hooping? I don't know, but it is possible for piercings to become irritated from the constant jostling of hooping.
I would recommend smaller jewelry (ie: curved barbell instead of a ring); no fancy charms and regular hot baths in salt water if your piercings are unhappy. Also, new piercings might not like hooping either, you might have to wait to heal before picking up the hoop.
Give it some time though, hooping and piercings are not mutually exclusive and your body will move the hoop away from uncomfortable areas. For instance some people bruise at first around their hips and knees when trying new hooping tricks; you eventually learn to move the hoop better and voila- no more bruises.
There are many ways to play / dance with a hoop that doesn't involve the navel, as you learn more tricks, your piercing(s) will take less of a beating. Good luck!

Re: Piercings and hooping
Mon, July 11, 2005 - 5:51 AMi had my belly button pierced and when I started hooping a few years ago it was just about unbearable, it ripped sometimes and started to puss and was completely healed from the original pierce. I just took it out. so sorry but that is my advice i still have marks from the infections i got and took it out two years ago. -

Re: Piercings and hooping
Mon, July 11, 2005 - 9:49 AMOuch! I was wondering that. Maybe I can just take out my peircing while I'm hooping? That's actually harder than it sounds *sigh* my ball is on too tight and I can't get it off! hehe.. I guess I'll drop my my local peircing shop and get some help. -

Re: Piercings and hooping
Mon, July 11, 2005 - 1:24 PMSomeone earlier mentioned doing fetish electrical tape x-es over nipples. Maybe you can do something similar over the belly button? A gauze square taped on? I don't think this would help much with the impact (though I suppose you could put cotton padding under the gauze . . .) but I think it would help with problems of /pulling/ the body jewelry, and the possibility of ripping.
Good luck! -

Re: Piercings and hooping
Mon, July 11, 2005 - 6:43 PMThat's a great idea :) As long as I'm not wearing a half shirt *grin* That might look a little weird. Today it wasn't as bad, I think it's hurting less the 'better' I get. (I'm on day two, hehe. still far from skilled) -

Re: Piercings and hooping
Mon, July 11, 2005 - 8:50 PMMaybe, even if you have your belly exposed, you could make it something neat looking? Do a crazy star decoration with the electrical tape or something? Add glittery jewels to it?
Muah. Hooping addictions ensue! -

Re: Piercings and hooping
Wed, July 13, 2005 - 7:41 PMI have never had any problems hooping over my belly button piercing (barbell with a little dangling charm). I usually hoop in a bikini top too, so it's constantly touching the hoop. I've had more problems smacking my upper ear piercings with shoulder hoop tricks. Ouch. I wore a beanie until I got that one down to protect my ear. My belly button ring was completely healed before I started hooping though, so I'm sure it's different if it's not healed. Listen to your body and I would imagine the salt water advice being good or washing it with dial if you felt you needed it. When I first started hooping it did feel a little strange rolling over the piercing, but I got used to it and never had any problems. Good luck! -

Re: Piercings and hooping
Wed, July 13, 2005 - 10:06 PMGood point about the ear piercings! A good whack in the side of the head and it'll hurt, especially if you have some hardware in your ears. I wear big plugs in my lobes and I've had them pop out and fly from a runaway hoop, Ouch! -

Re: Piercings and hooping
Tue, July 19, 2005 - 12:51 AMyeah i got my belly peirced about a month ago it hurt when i hooped but after a while it stopped, but when i am hooping just around my waist the hoop goes under my belly button so there is not much contact.
You could mabey put a big bandaid over it or somthing that way at least it wouldent shake around.
Just a note to any one doing any other acrobatic kind of stuff with a belly peircing, back bends really hurt but i found a long squishiy barbell that does the trick.
