Yeah, I noticed your kickstart is different. I do it both ways but usually default to the way in my vid unless I consioucly think about trying it your way. I think I should do that more. When you break it down like that, itmakes a lot more sense. I've been doing the kickstart for about three months now with 90% success if I'm on pavement or in a club. My florida grass is luscious and thick and that fetherweight, small diameter hoop makes me look like I know not what I'm doing (but freat for ankle hooping) Same thing happens in the sand. If you see my beam me up with kickstart video, I have a much better time with it, cuz i use regular weight hoops.

Hint for you, Alexis... was watching your version of the kickstart, and realize that you are starting the motion with the leg that will be planted... try lifting your other foot and doing the back-kick to give it momentum while you're already balanced on the leg that will be the anchor... but I think I'm going to try your version too, and be able to do either :)

Jeffz.. thanks :) yeah, blushing.. or at least laughing at myself, which I totally enjoy doing :) I've been working on a lot of new moves lately, so LOTS of bloopers to laugh about... and right now I've got this awesome big red blotch on my face from a nice hoop-scrubbing on a blooper I did this morning, oopsie.

I like including the bloopers.. I think it was Ariel who was reviewing the Body Hoops video, and praising Diana for including the outtakes :) And, that always stayed with me, how important it is for newer hoopers to watch more experienced hoopers still screw up! <grin>

here's a one minute clip of knee hooping with some sustained ankle hooping. Also, three false kickstarts. heh heh heh! I'm using a hoop made out of 1/2 inch tubing (great for learning ankle hooping without bruising) so combined with my super thick grass, it's pretty darn hard to make a kickstart happen.

Heh, I've been mentally designing a pair of pants with 3D rubber designs all the way up and down the legs :) But yeah, skin works great.... I used to hike up my shorts just to get that initial climb from knees to mid-thigh started..

When you are trying to get the knee hooping (both up and down), it helps TREMENDOUSLY if you wear shorts. Skin is the best gripper. :) You are actually handicapping yourself if you are trying to learn knee hooping while wearing any kind of pants (in my opinion). Anyway, once you master the move, then you can wear pants again. :)

good luck,

Slowing it down to get it over your hips/ass is pretty key but you can also try standing straight and tall to get more of you UP through the hoop, try going on your tiptoes to get the stretched-leg feeling...

...of course, once it gets past your widest point, you need to speed it back up so it won't just fall off over your knees.. and of course, you have to do this WITHOUT causing it to creep back up, LOL! I get a lot of lateral/sideways movement with my knees, but a lot of people will do a pump-back-and-forth movement instead (Sass does this, if you've seen her on any of the videos around.. )

Good luck!

Oh yeah, and the happy, peaceful stuff has definitely come out more since I started hooping, and WAY more since I quit my job with a bad boss and nasty patrons, and began supporting myself through hooping and other creative things that I love doing :) I highly recommend it...

I actually think of that song as "I just can't get it up.." which seemed appropriate for knee hooping :)

I remember one day last summer, standing out in the field behind the pool (the national swim team were having a training camp, and didn't want me to be distracting to the visiting swimmers and coaches, so I was temporarily banned from the pool deck)... and kneehooping away, trying DESPERATELY to get the hoop to come up...

...and after about five-ten minutes of sheer frustration, it finally DID! <jumping around in glee>... this was after a number of weeks of trying to get it, and stopping because I was getting soooo bruised... Managed it a couple more times that day, though with more long periods of struggle inbetween successful attempts... anyway, many months later, it somehow manages to look easy *IF* I'm wearing clothing that is nice and grippy.. I've got a lovely pair of powermesh Melodia pants that I can't wear hooping because they are just too damn smooth and slippery! <siiiiiigh>

Anyway,. glad to hear you're enjoying it :)

You make it look effortless! I've been trying knee-hooping, and I have a hard time getting it down from my waist to my knees. Is there a better technique than simply letting the hoop slow down?

www.christagiles.com/video/knees.avi

First: this is a HUGE file, and may take a few minutes to download.

Second: this is an unedited file, so you get to watch my bloopers, too :)

Third: while my nifty hooping pants (part of my kid-friendly hooping costume) are great for helping the climb back up from my knees, it turns out they aren't so good for below-the-knee or one-leg hooping... maybe too much volume, or not enough painting-for-grippyness on the front of the shins <shrug>

There's just a tiny bit of dancing around at the beginning, and then you'll see me doing a round of "shake your hips like Elvis" to bring the hoop back up - watch the bottom of my tank top, to see just how much diagonal movement I'm creating to shimmy the hoop up the sides of my legs.

Next, my first attempt at showing the "kick up with your knee" fails miserably <grin> but the second one works well enough - just using the thigh on the first leg to bump the hoop up before it spins onto the second leg.

Then I drop the hoop a few times, but get to show you kick-starting, which I do by using the back of my foot OUTSIDE the hoop to kick the hoop back so it starts spinning around the other ankle.. then that foot comes inside to flick the hoop up to my knees... in another version later, you'll see me change legs while doing the flicking thing - so either or both feet will work!

It was really great hearing that a bunch of you are using the videos off my site to teach yourself tricks! Makes me feel like I'm going a decent "pay forward" for all the folks whose videos *I* learned from! Hope this one helps, feel free to ask for others with specific skills featured... (or come up to Vancouver for my next workshop on Sunday, June 4th!)
