Mirror Tape~ NO PAPER BACKING

Hi hoop crafters~

After many years of handling the waste & inconvenience of sparkly tapes, I am super stoked to find a mirror tape with no paper! We're so psyched that we are now stocking this tape in 7 colors (black, silver, gold, copper, green, blue, red.) The rolls are 36" yards and are much smaller and cheaper to ship without paper. We are also stocking glow tape and 1/2" & 1" gaffers tapes in many colors and even a few vinyls.

Check out our site www.hoopdrum.com
go directly to our store:
https://sites.google.com/site/hoopdrum/store/hoop-tape

happy crafting!

Hey everyone, I was wondering if any of you had helpful resources about hooping for kids. I am starting two kids classes (a 5-8yr and 9-12yr). I think I am going to incorporate world dance in the hooping lessons so that kids can learn about other cultures. Any suggestions about how to break down moves for these age groups? I'm really excited to bring hooping to kids here in Pittsburgh. There aren't many of us in this city... YET!

My first good switch that I got with my kit from prodmod broke a while ago. The switches from Radioshack are just not very durable...I've broken two of them with little effort. Does anyone know of a good place to order quality slide switches from? It would be so helpful to have a good switch! I'm gentle I swear, they just like to break on me.

Teaching Hula Hooping to the Blind

The Governor Morehead School for the Blind has started bringing kids on field trips to our hoop jams. It is such a delight!!! It has also been a learning experience. There are some challenges to teaching hooping to non-sighted people and I'd like to share what I've learned so far. I also want to encourage others to reach out to the blind to teach them hooping. Obesity is a huge problem among the blind. They can't just go for a jog or to the gym. Travel is not a simple thing and mobility can be an issue too. Hooping and poi spinning are both fun forms of exercise that cost nothing and are easily accessible to non-sighted people.

So here are some of the things I've learned so far:

1. Go up and introduce yourself. Non-sighted people cannot find you to come introduce themselves. Be friendly and make them feel welcome even as you describe to them where the hoops are, which ones they might prefer, etc. And remember to utilize touch and other senses. You may not be able to lock eyes or let them see your smile but you can give someone's hand a squeeze and let them hear the smile in your voice.

2. They can't see the size of each hoop so it makes it hard for them to choose the size they want. It's even hard to pick one up and tell. You can't really tell how big or small some hoops are just by picking them up. I have two suggestions for this:

- I sorted our hoops into piles: 1. very large Groove Hoops, 2. smaller Groove Hoops, 3. large Sport Hoops, 4. smaller Sport Hoops and 5. Hand Hoops. Then I placed them in ascending order so that people could know, "Okay, I've tried one from Pile 1. Next I'll try one from Pile 2."

- You can also guide people into figuring out what size a hoop is by encouraging them to lift it over their head, place it on the small of their back and then try to slide one hand around the hoop's circumfrence while keeping the other side against the small of the back.

2. "Tell" instead of "Show". Verbalizing everything and clearly is essential. Utilize metaphors like, "Pretend someone is dropping ice down your back" or "like you're trying to bump bellys with a friend." Details are also important. Use your own eyes to notice the little things and translate them. These may include whether your palm is up or down, your fingers closed or open, your arm forward or to the side, the right foot slightly in front of the left, etc. Look for details and include them. Speak clearly (which does not necessarily mean loudly.)

3. Sometimes you have to "Show". Some moves are almost beyond description -- like the Infinity, where the wrist does a figure 8 (either in front, to the side or above and below). These moves can be taught by doing them with the hooper. Stand behind them and place your hand over theirs and do the move together -- with and without the hoop.

- For teaching assisted hand hooping (where the hand closes on the hoop each time), hold their hand and describe the circle the hoop should be making around the hand (along the crease under the pads on the palm and then below the knuckles as it rolls over the back of the hand). Trace this trajectory first with your finger and then with the hoop (while you're standing face-to-face with them doing an isolation so the hoop is not yet spinning freely. This way you won't accidentally bop them in the head.)

- For teaching basic hand hooping (without gripping the hoop each time), you will be teaching them to release the hoop and move their hand up and down as if they were shaking hands with someone. To do this, stand behind them, place your hand over the back of their hand and pretend the two of you are one hand shaking hands with somone in front of you. Get the hoop going and then slide your hand out so that they keep going.

- Explain that you simply put your hands palm-to-palm in prayer position to move the hoop to the other hand. (I've found most people get this without explanation! Unlike sighted hoopers. Interesting.)

4. Sound. Hoops run away. Blind people can't find their hoop when they lose it because sometimes our hoops circle back and end up behind us. I plan to add some b.b.'s to hoops to help these kids "hear" where their hoop is running.

5. Make sure you give each hooper lots of room. They can't see each other and this keeps them from knocking each other's hoops down accidentally. (You can also teach them to joust with their hoops so they learn to recover from accidental bumps without losing the hoop and while backing away from each other to create more hoop space.)

6. Be On the Look-Out. When a hoop runs away from someone, they're likely to chase it right into the path of another hoop. This is something we can use our eyes to prevent.

I know I'll learn lots more lessons but this is what I've synthesized so far. It's been a wonderful blessing for me to see these kids hoop. I wish you could see the smiles on their faces. If you have a school for the blind in your area, I encourage you to reach out to them. Hooping grows confidence and good health in everyone. This is a great way to share our passion with others.

Has anyone tried this? I don't mean hooping while standing on a moving motorcycle. I mean porting them around on a motorcycle. I have looked long and hard at my bike but can't figure a way out to do it. I have bungees galore but the tailpipe is either too close or the hoops hinder my maneuvering the bike, both which are unacceptable..

There's no text on the stickers, so they are also timeless:)

It was from a girl in England... geez I wish I could remember what her name was, but she was on what looked to be a quarterpipe and she was doing a lot of isolations... She had the greatest song on there I have heard in a long time (it was a upbeat funk song? maybe Brazilian?). I forgot to get the name of the song. Could anyone help me?

I have been asked numerous times to give lessons. I have yet to do so because I wanted to be in total confidence of my abilities and I feel now is the time. The question I have is...When making a brochure or handout, what points are most important to cover? I have been checking the pros web sites and their hooping info, but don't want to copy or feel like I am stepping on any toes. Any ideas on how to make myself look like a pro while just getting my feet wet with this whole thing? Also, I am not certified in any area and am wondering if this is going to create doubt in people's minds over my ability. Maybe I am over thinking it. Maybe not. Any advice on getting this ball rolling would be much appreciated! Much love to an amazing community!

Hey there, I was wondering if one of you might be able to help me out. I am still learning perhaps some more basic stuff, and I can't seem to find a tutorial for this one move that I'd really like to learn. It's demonstrated as one of the first moves in this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzFtE5YoW7Y

It's the one where the hoop is brought (off-body) in front of you, and the motion slowed down, kind of like an illusion... sort of reminds me of the steering wheel of a big ship. Anyway, does anyone know of a helpful tutorial, or could someone break it down for me on here? I'd most appreciate it!
THanks!
Peace, Stef

I have to make a hoop for a 14 year old and I'm not sure whether to use 100 psi 3/4" tubing or 160 psi 3/4" tubing. I typically use the 160 psi for adults and 100 psi for kids, but I'm not sure what to do about a 14 year old, I also don't know what size she is. I'm thinking about making the hoop an adult size diameter out of the lighter tubing.

Not Another Hooping Selling Post!

I have been on here all day trying to find out about how many hoops someone would bring to an event. My mom organizes a craft show once a year and I figured I would jump in with a booth and some hoops. I figured I'd sell my simple designs for about $20 to $25 and the more tape used the higher the price. (some of the profit made would go back to the church)

So far I have about 30 hoops I have made in two different sizes so far along with different amounts of tape. For a first time seller especially at a craft show, you think 30 would be good for a start?

Also would it be a problem if I made up little fliers with different websites so people can go online and learn more? I don't think some of the companies would mind, it is publicity.

Business Liability Insurance?

I am planning on vending a booth at a fairly large festival in Virginia Beach. One of the requirements on the contract is to have liability insurance. (Though when I spoke with the event coordinator, she said it wasn't needed) But I will be signing a contract with this stated as attained.

Has anyone had to deal with this situation and how should I go about it. After required permits, taxes, and such I now get why vendors charge so much for their products.

Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks, Lois

Smaller Hoop Help

So I want to get into breaks and work on getting more tricks up my sleeve. I am pretty sure I need a smaller hoop, but I'm not sure how small I should try working with. Right now, my hoops are out of 1/3 169 psi at around 40 in diameter. I recently bought some thinner tubing that I think may be appropriate.

Any advice or suggestions would help.:)
Thanks.

OT: Rechargeable Batteries

SOOOOOO...I got this crazy ridiculously awesome 80's looking ghettoblaster that's an ipod dock for when I hoop outdoors. http://gizmodo.com/photogallery/i931ces2008/1000435533 (if you're in the market). The only problem is that it takes 10 D batteries. I've pretty much spent half the price of the stereo on batteries since I've gotten it, which I know is awful for the environment and my pocketbook. I want to make the switch to rechargeable (should have done this with all my batteries a long time ago), but I'm a little overwhelmed with the options. I see a lot of AA and AAA rechargeables, but not too many D's. I know this isn't a hooping question, but I figure a lot of you travel with a boombox and some might be in the same predicament. Thanks friends!!

I'm thinking of bringing my hoop for the 1st time out of the country...but it's 36" and non-collapsible....so just wondering if any of you guys have traveled on the plane with hoops... and whether you put it with the rest of the luggage... or brought it straight on the plane with you. And if it did go with the luggage... did you have to pay any extra fees??

Cheap LED hoops I found

So I just bought this LED hoop online on ebay, I've been watching this guy sell them on the cheap for about a month now and thought I would buy one and check them out

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400053929089&viewitem=&_trkparms=tab%3DWatching&salenotsupported

on their website they go for $125 and the charger is like $30 and shipping is like $15

So, I'm pretty impressed with the price I got.

I got mine for $113 and I've been seeing a lot of the single colors go for $75!!!!!!!! THe hoops have 25 led lights in them, they are rechargeable, collapsible, and come with a charger.

Just thought I'd share the good deal with others

ATS Hoop Dance! :)

It has been a dream of mine to create an improvesational Hoop language roughly based on and inspired by the leader/group improve concepts of American Tribal Style Belly Dance. As far as I know, this has not been done before, but let me know if I'm incorrect.
My goal is to create a thorough set of rules, cues, moves, and transitions inspired from ATS, so that many hoopers can dance together. Like in ATS, there is an interchangable leader who cues moves and combos; communicating with a secret hoop language. LIke ATS there is also room/time for solos, different numbers of performers, and it can be done to any music!
Here's a little glimpse of some stuff the Ritzy Rouge hoop troupe has been working on lately. Its a rough little early practice, and we have a lot more, but I wanted to share so here it is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6olV2Pa0HsE&feature=channel_page

If there is enough interest, I will start posting an ATS Hooping Tutorial series on UTube, where we'll teach basic moves and cues, and break down combinations. Just say "Yes"!LOL

so.... january, dull shoulder pain. in the beginning of february my shoulders turned to mystrious popping/cracking/grinding sounds. i tried to corrent my cubicle posture (thinking correctly that it had something to do with the shoulder pain) but then i started having pretty awful pain in the middle of my back, and when i bent forwards a little crack/pop always in teh same place in my back.

so i went to a shoulder dr. what a relief. so sure i had arthritis or something awful. he told me that alll of that is caused my a thoracic imbalnce. he explained htis to me as the top half of my back being much stronger than the middle. which is pulling my shoulders forward. which actually felt more comfortable than good posture. this problem if ignored for a long time could make you a hunchback. the pain in my back, is from trying to correct this by using muscles that aren't strong enough.

so.... before i went to the shoulder dr. i had seen a sports medicine dr, and he sent me to physical therapy for my shoulders. i was given a good rotator cuff routine. which is great in itself, but the shoulder dr told me that it's a good thing, but not going to fix the problem, which is caused by a thoracic imbalance.

so yesterday i found myself back in physical therapy. physical therapy is a totally awesome thing and has fixed me before, but this is not a full blown injury that requires lots of visits in a short time. i can't afford that and i dont have the time. she actually suggested twice a week (prolly for as long as i'll keep making appointments) but i can't afford that, and the only day i can make appointments for is wednesdays. so yesterday i was given three of the many exercises that i was already given from the rotator cuff routine. no back things. i can't afford to take our appointments quite that slow. next week i'm going to outright ask. i know i'm not a pt, but i know myself, and i know how to do what i had already been given. next week i'm going to ask for the full back routine and not go for a few weeks and see how it goes.

but here's my question to anyone out there who is a physical therapist... can some of you guys suggest some back strengthening exercises? specifically thoracic? i'm eager to get started on the thing that will actually fix the problem.

thanks! i appreciate any help, and i know some of you are really knowlegable when it comes to this kind of thing

anyone have any good hoop tattoos or ideas for ones?

i would like to permanently mark my skin :) and i hope to incorporate not only the hoop, but the colors and ideas of the medicine wheel. (my medicine wheel hoop is my favorite.) it's just a baby idea right now.

i've seen a couple hoop designs around here, but i'm wondering if anyone else would like to share.
What to do with leftover tubing pieces

So after making hoops I always have small pieces left over, some of them are really small.
Depending on the size of tubing you use and the size of your fingers you can cut them down to like 1/4 of inch, put your favorite glitter or prismatic tape on and call it a ring! If its too small sand it down on the inside with your file or I used my dremel and it fit perfectly.
just an idea i had when i was thinking, i don't just want to throw this away!

I was wondering if anyone gets their hoop making supplies wholesale. I get my tubing and connectors at Lowe's and tape from Identi-Tape, but now that I'm making them more steadily, I'm starting to wonder about wholesale pricing. I don't know how any of this works.

Ok, I've been trying to figure this out and I still can't get it to work correctly. What is the name of this move (depicted below in GroovinMeGzz' video) @ 2:43 - 2:48 and how do you do it? I know you hold both hoops in the same hand so the edges are kissing like this )( and they drop down to cross but how do you get it to cross correctly and then come back up?! I could swear she had posted how to do this on Tribe before but I can't find it on this Tribe, the Hooping Tutorials tribe or the Videos tribe. Help please!!

tech hooping - applying CAPs to hooping

I've been thinking a lot about how to fully integrate various aspects of hooping that often seem really disparate. Hand hooping inspired by poi and isolationism has a lot of already existing paradigms for pattern creation; Antispin, linear isolation/extension, isolation, etc.... So first what are CAPs and how do we apply this to hooping and how does it integrate hand hooping more fully with body hooping.

In order to understand CAPs we first need to take a look at what a driving style is. consider for a moment poi. A 3 beat anti-spin pattern would be one driving stye another would be to fully extend your arm with the poi making a giant circle, that would be long arm extension driving style. So a large amount of movement in poi can be broken down and described by driving styles, the area of hybrids is this huge area of movement where people put two different driving styles together within one master pattern to form a new move. Here is an example of a 3 beat anti-spin in one hand and a long arm extension in the other hand, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9IvfVX7HYg . This slight tangent is cool because we can directly apply a lot of these things to hand hooping and a lot of people have!

But aside from driving styles in hand hooping we can describe other driving styles in hooping. There is on body hooping. Where a part of your body is imparting force to the hoop. This can have both a planar description as well as a location. For instance horizontal plane waist on-body hooping which is just what we usually call regular waist hooping. Another example would be vertical plane neck on-body hooping. Another driving style would be moving the hoop around your body while not actually imparting force directly from your body. I've been thinking of this as rotational or off-body hooping as you generally move the hoop by rotating the hoop around your body or holding the hoop stationary relative to you, but yourself rotating. Some examples of this would be a lift from the waist or sustained spinning. Another driving style would be contact hooping, which would just be any sort of contact hoop move like an across the chest roll or a conveyor belt. The last driving style I'll mention will be hand hooping which is a catchall term for the huge number of driving styles that exist within hand hooping.

So now, finally, what are CAPs? CAPs stands for Continuous Assembly Patterns. CAPs combine fractions of driving styles together to create new patterns. Say in our previous example of poi you take a long arm extension. Halfway through making a long arm extension you then do half of a 3 beat antispin, that's an example of a CAP. This can be applied to hooping in a number of ways. consider a triangle linear isolation in wheel plane http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GSq9telAk8 @ 0:37 along the bottom part of the isolation instead consider isolating it with your body around the hoop which would be a CAP of triangle linear isolation and rotational hooping. Another example would be consider linearly isolating hand hooping in a plane at about 60 degrees from the horizontal in front of you, up to your head, spinning bringing the hoop down from out under your legs and linearly isolating back to the start of the master cycle.

A lot of what people are doing with hooping can be described using this, including lots o trivial things like the transition from waist hooping to lift from waist could be considered a CAP. However, I think that CAPs give us a really precise way to describe what we as hoopers are doing while also using a framework to create new and interesting patterns.

Different take on fire hoop & LED

I live in a really small town and I am pretty much the only hooper anyone has every seen.

I did an impromptu fire hoop performance for the bar in my town, (we're so small, there is only 1 bar) When I was done I went in to have a drink to calm my nerves a little bit ( i always get really nervous) and got to talking to this small town boy about fire, leds, poi, staff, all of it.

he came up with the idea of instead of wicks on the end of the fire hoop, putting LED's on the end.

Has anyone else ever thought of that, seen it, heard of it, ideas on how to do it.

I told him about the LED & PSI us hoopers use, but he said, it'd be kinda cool and different.

share your thoughts with me!

Where to buy hoop couplings online.

So I go to Menards today and I order my 3/4 inch 160 psi tubing, grab a BUNCH of couplings.

Get in the car get pointed to where I need to go to get my tubing, I double check the number and the tubing to make sure it is right, then the security guy does the same thing.

Get home,

I have 1 inch tubing. I am so mad.

So I am looking for a place where I can buy 1 inch couplings online, cause the drive to Menards is a ways away for me. And I need them asap, since i have hoop orders to fulfill.

Anyone got a place to buy them online and cheap?

Thanks

Keeping the hoop up?

Yeah, yeah, silly question. I read the basic new to hooping stuff that's linked here, and I'm not sure what will help me, so here goes.

I'm new to this, I could never, ever, hoop as a kid. Ever. Just too damned uncoordinated. Now as a morbidly obese adult I heard about how wonderful the sportshoops are, so I bought one. I got to the point I could keep it up for eight revolutions, and then it would crash to the ground. The next day, I was too sore to use it. I made two more hoops, one a little bigger than my sports hoop with the 1" 100 psi tubing, and one a bit bigger than that with 3/4" 100 psi tubing (lucky me, my hardware store sells it by the foot so it's easy to just try with out major commitment). I do really great with the bigger hoop, after these last few days I find a groove and it gets going real smooth, except it slowly migrates down from my waist. I get maybe eight revolutions with it during this smooth migration, then it drops once it gets to my mid thighs.

When it feels so right, why is it still going wrong? I've never felt so balanced or smooth with a hoop before this one, yet it still moves on me. (so much better than simply crashing to the ground like hoops of my childhood. There's no thrashing, banging or crashing until it gets to my midthigh/knee area)

Is it me? Could it just be a gripping issue? It's bare naked.

Hello everyone!

Just wanted to remind all the hoopers out there to send their letters to the White House asking the Obama family to host World Hoop Day on their lawn! Info is on the home page of www.worldhoopday.com, as well as the letterhead to print out and write your own message on. Just sent my letter today (decorated with star stickers and flowers, of course). We need as many letters as possible to try and pull this off, so encourage your friends to do the same! Happy Hooping!

Discovery

I have made several of my own hoops. I've used electrical tape and glitter tape which is usually kind of slippery. I was cleaning out a closet and found a roll of what is referred to as pre-wrap. This is a foamy athletic tape which my girls had used when they played sports. I thought hmm wonder if this would work on a hoop. I decided to give it a try. I wrapped it in several layers as it is pretty thin. You have to be careful and not stretch it too tight or it tears. It gave the hoop a nice padded feel and not slippy on clothes.
I found a website called gotprewrap.com and they sell all different colors, I got pink and purple. Not a bad price on them either and I barely even used a roll for one hoop. My hoops are pretty good sized too.
So just wanted to pass on this small discovery.

To choreograph, or not to choreograph?

I have my first hoop performance in 2 weeks at a charity event in NYC. I have only been hooping for 6 months, so I am a bit nervous...but I consider it a chance for adventure, to share my hoop passion, boost my confidence, and help out a good cause.

After debating for weeks over which song to use for my 5 minute solo spot (I had so many great ones in mind!), I have finally chosen one that is high energy, fun, and presents opportunities for tempo changes, different moods, and both simple and complex moves.

so here is my dilemma, should I: 1)choreograph the routine with specific moves and transitions at certain parts, 2) not choreograph, and instead let the music flow through me as I channel it...improvising, smiling, and expressing myself, or 3) do a combination of choreography and improvisation with some moves/tricks/transitions in mind, but plenty of room for spontaneity?

yesterday, i hooped expressively to the track, and filmed it. reviewing the tape, i felt happy with the natural and spontaneous way I responded to the music, and felt there was a decent amount of variety in my routine.

no matter what, I plan to hoop to this song as part of may daily practice from now until the show.
any advice/suggestions are much appreciated. thanks!

I am new to making LED hoops, and so far I've been playing it safe and buying my LEDs from prodmod. But I really want some of the super fast flicker color changing LEDs and I can't find them! Does anyone have a good source for buying LEDs? Or know where I can get the flicker LEDs?

I searched old posts for info specific to traveling on a train and didn't find anything, but sorry if this is a repeat topic. I'm going to be taking my hoops (only 2) on a train soon. So, I was wondering if anyone has any tips or experiences specific to trains/Amtrak. Thanks

So, I have watched the movie Big Fish numerous times and the hooper in the background was just that, the hooper in the background. Well, last night it was on so I used it as background noise, but this time the hooper got me so excited. Maybe it is the fact that I just returned from Hoop Convergence or maybe not. I am really curious as to who the hooper is. This topic may have been posted before, but I must have missed it. Anyway, any other instances of hoopers that folks wanna share?

So I just realized today as I was adding Basement Jaxx to my hoop playlist for tonight how far my musical tastes have evolved. Just 3 years ago, I was kind of a hippy snob when it came to music (if it couldn't be recorded live for free, I wasn't interested in it). I have found my ear for music blown wide open since hooping has entered in a serious way. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

Hooping shoes

Hi - new here!

Question about shoes. I'll be hooping a lot this summer on hot, black rock... (it's my new hooping spot!)

I am used to hooping with no shoes on, but today the rock was so hot that I had to put on my flip flops, which I hate hooping in. I don't want to hoop in tennis shoes. I'm looking for an alternative shoe that feels like I'm still kinda bare footed, but protects my feet and allows mobility. I would hope they look cool too, but that's secondary.

Any ideas?

Thanks so much!

Jen ♥

Hooping and arthritis?

I'm not a hooper yet, though I found myself inspired by a video of fire hooping from Burning Man, and I've been browsing this Tribe with interest for a little while now. I also have a form of arthritis that mostly affects by back (ankylosing spondilitis), though I'm able to keep the pain fairly well in control with medication. I also have some modern dance training, and I've long been an active social dancer.

So, what about taking up hooping if you have arthritis? From what I've read here, it could be good exercise, though I would have to be sure to hoop equally in both directions. :) My arthritis doctor (rheumatologist) didn't have any objections. I'm curious if there are other members of this Tribe who have arthritis but also enjoy hooping?

Sorry if this topic has been posted, but I am looking for good websites to order hoop dance clothing. Specifically what I'm looking for are the flowy skirts (maybe tiered skirts in a gauzy material) or flowy pants. Something comfortable to hoop in yet could be worn to events. Any ideas or websites would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Hooper trading cards! Thanks to a funny comment by my husband, I've unleashed hooper trading cards on the Internet. Collect them all! Trade online - use them a profile photos - print them out - add stats on the back as you like. With hoop season getting started, these would be a great way to introduce yourself at conventions and hoop jams.

You can see a couple of examples and download the Photoshop files to make your own here:
http://www.mediatinker.com/blog/archives/010662.html

If you don't have Photoshop, e-mail me with the necessary details (as explained at the link above) and I'll make one for you.

Your preferred hoop diameter / psi

So I've been hooping nearly a year now (unbelievable, a year already!!) and I've experimented with several sizes of hoops along the way, yet I keep going back to the very first hoop I ever made.. which is 42" diameter 3/4" tubing 160psi.

With very few hoopers in my area, I rely on all of those fantastic videos posted by all you wonderful fellow hoopers, and I can't help but notice hoop size differences. For example, Spiral seems to use a very small diameter hoop (no clue what type of tubing and psi she uses) but she makes that hoop look so quick and light and she hoops effortlessly. I know obviously this is also due to her amazing skills :) but I'm wondering if I should graduate, in a way, to a smaller/lighter hoop. I struggle with the smaller sizes every time I try, so I always end up going back to my default 42", which is comfortable for me but feels so heavy and slow..

So I'm just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on this. What diameter/size/psi do you all prefer?

This will be a rather brief post, any one heard of this online hooping university? Its like www.hoopinguniversity.com I do not know how I stumbled on it, but I was just wondering if this thing was legitimate (not that I could afford it, even if it was). I just wanted to check in, I tried to look it up on tribe but didn't see any threads about it so I hope this is a reasonably new topic. Let me know what you all know! Thanks

Fixing an oblong hoop

I just made an LED hoop for the first time. I ordered hdpe tubing online, and it came kind of scrunched up in a box. Now I have an oval shaped LED hoop. Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this? My normal tricks for 160psi hoops aren't working since this tubing is so much more rigid. It just doesn't seem to want to budge.

WMG Muting your Hoop Videos?? Solution Found (xpost)

Hi everybody, well as most of you know WMG (Warner Music Group) has been muting videos with music we put in it. They muted one of Sierra's first videos.. and it really pissed me off.

I found a solution that worked for me... I found it online and thought what the hell, I'll try it. It took longer than the 2- 3 minutes.. more like 20 minutes.. but the audio is back on my video. Video in Question... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9_V03CAl3U
As you can see, by my annotations, it was really muted.

Here's what I did to fix it. (copied from another site)

ATTENTION YOUTUBERS:

i have a way of getting around WMG:
just before i tell you how, please appreciate that this method ONLY WORKS 99% OF THE TIME, so please don't go physco on me if it doesn't lol. Saying that though, i have used this method on all of my videos and so far it has worked without fail.

Ok:
1) Go to "My Videos".

2) Select "Resolve Copyright" on the video you are having copyright issues with. OR, go to the video itself and choose "resolve copyright" from there.

3) Scroll down and pick the option "I want to learn more about this dispute process".

4) Scroll down and pick the option "Take me to the dispute form".

5) Pick option #2 and PASTE the following statement into the text bar next to it;

"Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use."

6) Fill out the rest of the info on the page. Use your REAL name where it asks for it. Choose "Continue" when all information has been filled out.

7) Scroll down on the next page and select "Submit dispute".

Within 2-3 minutes your video's audio should be back!
Again this only works 99% of the time.
PASS THE WORD ON!!!

A good message board?

hey folks!

at my super important job i spend a lot of time in between calls amusing myself on the internet. i keep tribe open all day (more or less) checking any recent activity. but the problem is there hasn't been enough activity at all! so i joined safire's site. which i was really excited to see seemed really active and busy. but no. i enthusiastically jumped on a bunch of threads, but these conversations are falling flat. i'm just bored. i want to make hoopy chit chat but i'm pretty sure that tribe and safire's community would be the place. but niether of these are cutting it. don't get wrong. great supportive communities filled with great people. just not active enough.

i guess my question would be, does anyone else belong to an online community thats really active and interesting? i guess it doesn't have to be about hooping, altho thats my small talk of choice atm, i'm just bored and i want to talk to people about something. my music raises eyebrows (or it would if i ever talked to anyone at work about it) i know lots of really active boards on those subjects, but not for work. idk. i'm just bored. tribe is kind of ideal (as far as subject matter, which is like everything!) but it's gotten so boring. i'm going to pick my nerdy boyfriend's brain about this too when i go home, but i thought i'd ask you all first. maybe there's some hooping internetz that i was unaware of?

thanks!

I am trying to bring hoops to the hoop-less in Coeur d'Alene,ID. It started as a way for my to get positive feed back because job searching was so negative. It is a small town that is behind in the times a bit. I enjoy hoping as another way to move my body. I did it all winter in the snow and try and get out in the sun every day I can.
Well I decided my neighbor needed a hoop and then I started taking the hoops to gyms and meeting the group fitness instructors. I have had troubles with getting people to call me back and follow through, but I keep plugging away at it. One great yoga studio took me under its wing and has help me so much. The owner's interest for the hoop led to workshops and sales of the hoops. Her email blast hit a reporter that came to the workshop and wrote an article. I have the second page of the Sunday paper.
That was huge for me and not something I had in my sights, but am very happy that it happened. Anyways, hooping.org found the story and put it on their website. This morning I was checking the site like I do everyday and there is my big green picture. I didn't want to say anything on this tribe as I did want to blow my own horn, but having hooping.org featuring it I felt I should say some thing now.

Really life comes down to having faith in your self and following what makes you happy/passion, it all works it self out if you ahve good intentions.

I made a hoop out of the High Energy Long-Life Photoluminescent tape from this page: http://www.identi-tape.com/phosphor.htm

The glow it gives off is amazing, it literally casts light in slightly shadowy corners of my house when fully charged.

The only problem is it's very very slippery. It's almost anti-grip!
Do any of you use glow in the dark tape on your hoops?
Do you know of a place to get some with some grip?

Or is that $88 roll my only option?

This weekend the town I live in had their annual spring festival called Double Decker. It is an arts and music fest that has all sorts of vendors selling any number of products. The musical lineup was pretty appealling because Robert Randolph and the Family Band were the headliners. I went to the festival, hoops in hand, ready to have a good time. I got to the area and decided that since the crowd was so thick I would stash my hoops in a safe spot until I was ready to use them. I went to a venue were I am friends with the door guys, bartenders, and owners and left my hoops just inside the door behind a big bouncer, with his permission of course. I then wandered around for thirty minutes or so and heard the announcement for a really good funk band that would be fun to hoop to. I returned to the venue, hugged and thanked the door guy and went to the stage. I chose to stand in a tucked away spot so I wouldn't congest walking traffic. The band was delayed so I ended up sitting in this corner for over a half hour. The band started and I stood up to get a better look and had been up for a matter of seconds when I saw 2 police officers standing close to me. They approached me and asked if they could have a word with me. I complied b/c I had nothing to hide, but was more than confused with their request. As they walked me into an alley, I could hear the people around me making comments like, "Down with the hippies", "Oooohhh hoola hoopers going to jail", and "this isn't woodstock"! I got into the alley and the officer asked me what I had been doing today. I told him wandering around the festval. He asked if I had been to the venue where I left my hoops and I responded with yes but only long enough to drop them off. He asked me why I would do that. I responded with I wasn't sure what he didn't understand. He asked why I would leave my hoops there and I explained friends, space issues and consideration were my reasons. He then asked if he could search my belongings which consisted of an extremely small bag big enough to hold my i.d., cellphone, and cash. They dumped it all on the ground and pilfered through it. He asked me if I had been causing problems and selling anything. I answered with I have yet to even use my hoop today and why did they pick me. He responded with I matched a description of a female. "Me, I match the description? They described me?" He said "You are the only one around here I see with a hoola hoop." I looked around me and there were 7, yes 7, cops surrounding me. At this point, the officer stood and stared at me and then told me to enjoy the rest of my day. Later that evening a friend of mine, who I was not with at the moment, was almost arrested because an officer told her she had offended him with her hooping and threatened to take her in because she was hopped up on amphetamines. Really???? I am seriously considering filing a report against the police force in my area. None of the hoopers that attended this event caused any problems. Everyone was considerate, shared, hooped in the back away from the major crowd and just enjoyed the day. I was seriously upset by my altercation with the officers. I was singled out because I was carrying a hoop. A circular piece of tubing caused me to get searched and surrounded by 7 officers. I ended up hooping my heart out and receive a wonderfully warm reception from the crowd. I just wanted to share this story and see how others might have handled it differently or steps to rectify the discrimination

Connectors/couplings for making hoops?

Hi!

I've recently decided to try my hand at making a few hoops, but tracking down the materials has been a bit of a wild goose chase.
I've got my tape (thank you, Identitape!) and I've got my irrigation tubing .
(I had to drive to another city to find the irrigation tubing because there's some weird ordinance in Chicago where they won't sell it because it's not "code" and they only had 3/4" 100 psi, not 160 psi. That doesn't make too much of a difference, right? Just weight?)

But I haven't been able to find the connectors anywhere. I don't even really know what to call them, just those gray plastic connectors
pictured here in the Holy Grail of hoopmaking: http://www.jasonunbound.com/hoops.html

It seems like they'd be pretty standard, but I've been to several Home Depots (including the one I found the tubing at) and no one seems to know what I'm talking about!

It's pretty much this, right? Except I need 3/4":
http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100013426

The closest I've been able to find is a metal coupling like this:
http://www.pexsupply.com/img/categoryImages/hydropex-coupling.gif

But the weight of the metal throws my hoop's balance off, and there's that raised section the middle, so the two ends of the hoop don't completely meet and it's been clicking at higher speeds.

Help! Any leads on where I can track down the right kind of coupling?

Thanks so much! :)

Hooping and yoga

I was wondering how many hoopers make yoga a weekly practice.
It seems when I am doing my yoga( I mix it with meditative movement ) if feel so much better about myself and my hooping.

I think the two mesh so well together. I also have hypothyroid and struggle with weight and yoga /hooping are the only forms of activity that seems to really make a difference. I am very motivated ,but sometimes I have to push myself. So, anyway my question is do any of my fellow hoopers practice yogaand do any of you suffer from hypothyroid or thyroid issues. If so what do you do to help the symptoms and what movement do you practice in addition to hoopdancing.

You input would be appreciated:)

Anyone interested in splitting a 2 for 1 teacher training with me? Ojai, CA

It is with Bodyhoops and it would only cost $187.50 per person. Here is a link with the info:

http://bodyhoops.com/pages/teacher-certification-program

I'm teaching my first class in a few months and I'm excited, but also a little scared. I've been hooping for 8 years and taught many friends and family members how to hoop, but never a dance studio full of strangers. If I can find a fellow hooper to split the cost with me, I think this would be a really good tool.

It is in July and the date is still to be determined. I assume it will be on a weekend. It is in Ojai which is only about an hour from LA.

Next Step??

I've seemed to reach a plateau... I can do let's say.. all the basic/intermediate moves

I was wondering if anyone would be willing to suggest new things to try for me at the point?? Tips? Tutorials?
I'm pretty happy improving and smoothing out the things I can do right now, but that can get boring very easily... I just can't seem to find anything new to add that isn't too advanced for me to even comprehend... Is that too much to ask?? Or should I just keep practicing the moves that seem nearly impossible to me at this moment..
I know when I first started out I would be way too eager to wait and just went right into trying to learn moves that were too advanced...
but I feel where I'm at now.. things seem to be getting more technical and harder to understand.
I hope this makes sense?
Like a lot of you I also started playing with minis as well so if anyone has tips or cool tricks to try let me know!

Thank you all for your help!

Anyone out there use 1/2 inch tubing for your hoops? I'm having elbow trouble and want to lighten my hoops up. I've never hooped with 1/2 inch tubing and am concerned that it will feel too teeny in my hand plus I heard that it kinks easily.

Any thoughts?

hi everyone - i'm checking in to see if any of you use credit card merchants and could give me a recommendation. i know a lot of us sell hoops "live" (at hoop jams etc), and wonder if you have a credit card merchant you work with that you really like and has reasonable fees. so far the 4 companies i've looked into have been prohibitively expensive -- they're all quoting around $50/month in fees, plus a credit card terminal costs around $400-500. that just seems insane to me. what am i missing?...

Hooper Names

So, I love the concept of hooper names, like hoopgirl and then all her people take on different names and stuff like that or like hoopalicious. I think you all follow. So I was just curious if any one else does this and what everybodys hoop name is! :-D

And does anyone know if hoopla is taken? My nickname from a lot of people has always been lala (cause my name is laura and I am a bit of an airhead) and hooplala is a hoop group so thats already taken but hoopla is also like the word for like excitment and over activity so I though it might be a cool one to take. Any who!! lemme know! haha thanks every body.

Happy New Year!

So I remember a post a while back about foam tape... and today at Madison's first hoop jam of spring, my friend had an ingenious solution. The hoop was covered with a layer of foam gripper tape that bicyclists use on their handle bars. She said it was kind of expensive, but it was totally worth it for her boyfriend, who does a lot of handwork with a heavy hoop. And from what I can remember, there are all sorts of colors. :-)

I brought her a hoop yesterday and my hoopnotica B1 DVD and she is so happy to own a hoop! Yay!
She said I should make one for each of the 3 locations and when people are crabby we should tell them they HAVE to go hoop outside!

What a joyful work place we could have!!

I am so happy and I had to tell those that would understand the most :)

Outdoor Hoop Studio?

This weekend, we put an offer in for a house, and it was accepted! Hurray!

So it's been about 2 days... and I'm already considering building some type of outdoor hooping structure away from the house. I can hoop in the basement, but would totally prefer to have my own private retreat that has access to sunshine and where I can lose myself completely.

Has anyone ever built such a structure? I've thought about a yurt of some kind, and Beth Lavinder's beautiful studio in NC comes to mind :-) Or perhaps rehabbing the garage? What are your thoughts? Any photos or links to share?

It's not a gigantic yard (I'm in the city of Madison still), but I'd love to see what I can do! :-)

Fire hooping tricks

Hey you guys!

I've been fire hooping for a few months now, and finally have another performance lined up for this weekend. It's been a little while since I've performed for a crowd, so I've been practicing today unlit, trying new things to see if they are possible while on fire.

So, my random question to those who fire hoop (or those who just like to watch fire hooping) is what is your favorite hoop trick to do while using a fire hoop (or which one looks coolest to those who don't use fire)?

I've been really into doing isolations with my fire hoop :)

I look forward to hearing what tricks you guys like!

(X-posted in the fire hooping tribe)

Collapsible "Twist" hoops

So I love the twist designs on collapsible hoop, but have had a hard time comparing the two big one i have seen. I'm torn between:

Infinity travel hoop from http://www.bodyhoops.com/

and

Swirly Hoop (which come with cute tote) from http://www.hoopdelite.com/store.php

I have heard how heavy the infinity can be, so I was hoping perhaps the latter was lighter. I read the Swirly hoop can be made in any size & color combo you want as well. They both cost about the same so I have hoping that maybe you guys could give me some input/personal experience with them (also if you prefer the hoopnotica one to them as well, I have heard allot of good things but I'm prone to breaking/losing things w/ several pieces). Thanks!

plus size hooper help

I feel like physics is working against me

I am having one heck of a time maintaining rotation, to the point that I can't progress with other tricks because I cant keep the hoop going

as a person with a bigger middle it seems like the physics required to get the hoop to continuously move around me is completely different from that of a smaller person. as in Im feel like and look like Im working 5x harder and moving much more than other hoopers (as in a thin hooper looks like they are gently rocking back and forth and the hoop breezes around with low effort--me Im moving a huge amount and a huge effort and the hoop drops after about 10 revolutions)

Are there any tips or any suggestions to help?

I know the number 1 thing I need is to get back to a class, but while Im between class times and pay checks, any ideas?

thanks

Hey hoopers!

Just wondering if any of you are on Facebook. I am and if you feel like being hoopfriends (lol), just look for Glenda Jordan. I'm part of the Nashville network, I think. My profile pic is this kind of sepia-toned photo of me on a tree stump.
Thanks!

Chest Reversals

I searched, but I couldn't find anything on this subject.

In lots of hooping videos I see people doing this move where they change the direction of the hoop back and forth really fast a couple times while hooping on their chest.

For the life of me I can't figure out how to do this. It looks like their arms are inside the hoop, pushing it in the opposite directions with their palms or wrists?

I can change the direction when chest hooping by hitting it with my hand on the outside of the hoop, but how do you get that quick back and forth that I see so often?

Hooping Sweet Potato Queens parade thru Jackson, MS

Spotted at this year's 27th Annual Mal's St. Paddy's Parade were Hooping Queens Vickie Vaughan, Del Peters, Sharon Henderson, Teressa Richey, Vicki Merrymon, Nan Strickland (all from Pell City, AL) and Diane Lee of Picayune, MS. The event was started by Malcolm White, co-owner of restaurant and music venue Hal & Mal's. Each year THE Sweet Potato Queen, Jill Conner Browne (author of The Sweet Potato Queen Book of Love) and her entourage march down the street in larger-than-life green and pink costume. This year's event raised at least $25,000 for Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital. About $10,000 of that was raised at a poolside "JELLO Wrasslin'" event!

I think it is fabulous that these ladies helped with this cause by hooping!

LED hoop compare and contrast

So!!
I tried (and failed only because I broke my lights) to make an LED hoop. It just didn't work well and the tube was all cut up and sad.. any way

My question is for those of you who have used different types of LED hoops what ones do you think are best?
I know of psi hoops and all I ever hear is their awesomeness but they are uber expensive.
Any other cheaper type of hoop that is still reasonable and works well?
Lemme know! thank you guys
--Laura
