waivers for our jam? flying/moving object warning?

anyone written a waiver for their jam or classes?
since we've moved indoors for the winter there's been a lot more bumping. we're greatful to have such a nice large space, but hoops take up a lot of space, so it fills up pretty fast! the community center also has more little kids running around.

watching the craziness yesterday i was struck with the idea that maybe we should have people sign waivers? i dont think anyone is the suing sort, but who knows what the angry parent of an injured child might do? it's really actually only the kids i'm worried about, because most hooping adults realize the risk, and can get over a hoop to face incident. but a screaming hysertical child (who was running around, not watching) with an angry parent on their side might be angry they weren't informed of the "dangers"

has anyone written a waiver for their jam or classes?

I have looked at identi-tape and do not see white in anything but vinyl or electrical tape. Do you know of anywhere to get a shimmery white/pearl color tape that sparkles? Thanks!

I am going to Florida in a couple of weeks and of course want to take my hoop. I have a travel hoop but I don't think it will fit in my suitcase.

Has anyone carried a hoop on a flight recently? I am afraid to try and have them tell me I can't carry it on.

Thanks!

Looking for feedback re: Trick Concepts fire and/or LED hoops

I'm interested in any feedback ppl might have from LED and/or fire hoops from Trick Concepts.

I have fire fans from them; love them, love their gear.

I was checking out their fire/LED all-in-one hoop and was wondering if anyone's used it -- or just their LED *or* fire hoops -- and has any feedback at all to share. Positive? Negative? Neutral? Anything?

It just looks like a pretty great all-in-one solution: coils down, lights up two ways, flex spines, available "off-the-rack" in my preferred size, etc. Free shipping within the US. Very tempting....

I am involved with starting up a performance hoop troupe- 4 of us total. We are incorporating l.e.d.'s in our show- we are getting ready to order hoops from PSI. The question is; do you folks think it is important for all of us to have the same led hoops? Will it impact our visual performance negatively if we are using different color/style led hoops? Some of us are interested in PSI's dragonfly's, others are interested in the elven style hoop... is it a big deal?

Cleaning Your Hoops

I was wondering if anyone cleans their hoops and what you use? I hoop at a dance space with community hoops and a few of the hoops there always leave my hands feeling strangely icky. Afterwords I wash my hands and I suspect the hoops are rather grimy although its not overly visually obvious.

I also worry a bit about the flu virus traveling from hand to hoop to hand. Any thoughts?

recommendations for portable music player?

Hello hoopers,

I am wondering if anyone has any advice to give me about purchasing a portable music player for hoop jams in the park. I had a really small iPod speaker set, but it is just not loud enough for everyone to hear at our weekly hoop jams. I am looking into purchasing a new one, and I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation? My hesitation in buying a bigger sound system has a lot to do with the fact that they are usually powered by D batteries, but I suppose I could just invest in some rechargeable ones and it wouldn't be the end of the world...

Thoughts?

As always, thanks for your help!

Difference between the irrigation tubing and yellow gas tubing?

My hoop is a Bodyhoops hoop and it is made of yellow gas tubing. It is the only hoop I have at this point and I have not yet used a hoop made from the irrigation tubing. I am curious if there is a big difference between the two? Is one better than the other for making hoops?

Making fabric covered hoops

I'm trying to find the best way to make fabric covered hoops and I was wondering if any of you have any helpful hints. I just made my first one by cutting 1" strips of fabric and using clear vinyl tape on each end to tape the fabric to the hoop. I also used metallic tape and gaffer for the edges of the fabric. I'm just not sure how the fabric will hold up being that it's not completely taped to the tubing. Do you use double stick tape or maybe use clear vinyl over the whole length of the fabric? Any advice would be greatly appreciated:)

HoopPath: Louisville (11/13th-15th/2009)

HoopPath: Louisville “Warrior Path”

Friday, November 13th, 6-9 pm.

Saturday, November 14th, 1-4 pm.

Sunday, November 15th, 1-4 pm.

St Joseph’s Church/School Gymnasium
1406 E. Washington St.
Louisville KY 40206

What’s up, Louisville?

I am very excited to unveil my new workshop series, The Warrior Path on the weekend of November 13th-15th, 2009. The Warrior Path is a brand new workshop with new terms, techniques, and exercises intended to introduce hoopers to what we call “Warrior” style hooping. This concept combines on and off body techniques with rapid current and plane changes. The Warrior Path techniques are integrated with internal, meditative foci, as well, to help the hooper open up to their own stillness and clarity.

The HoopPath has taught Warrior techniques since its inception, but this will be the first time that we have concentrated this much time and energy on this wonderfully beautiful and unique approach to hoop dance. We assure you that even those who have taken HoopPath classes and workshops before will come away with new terms and concepts to further their own hoop practice. This is indeed the long awaited second chapter so many of you have asked for over the last year.

Within the HoopPath Community, the term, “Warrior” refers to an indomitable attitude or spirit to which each of us has access and, through mindful practice, can foster and grow within ourselves. The techniques of The Warrior Path help us to explore and develop an inner calm and resilience that strengthens and improves our hoop dance, while also teaching us more about our own personal power away from the hoop.

While this workshop is very much a continuation of our past workshops, we have designed this series to be equally accessible to those who have never taken an HP class before. If you have not taken a workshop with us before, you will need to sign up for Day One. Day one of WP will be very similar to Day One of our other workshops. If you have not been to one of our workshops before, you should know that the skills covered in Day One are hardly ‘beginner.’ Day One sets up the terms, concepts, and foundational techniques upon which all the advanced teaching rests. Day One is easily the favorite day of most returning students. The tickets for this workshop are offered in a variety of packages. Sometimes when we travel, we have had such little space that we have been unable to offer any discounts. This time around we are very excited to have a space large enough that we can offer essentially “specials.”

Here are a list of our options for HP: Louisville:

Days 1, 2, and 3

Days 1 and 2

Days 2 and 3 (For returning students).

Single Day tickets for all 3 days will go onsale on Monday, 11/9/09.

We are VERY excited to offer, for the first time in Louisville, “Bring a Friend” pricing. This means that when you and a buddy buy your tickets (two tickets) together (in one transaction) your individual tickets are discounted.
Favorite Hooper Networks?

Do you have a favorite way to connect with hoopers via the worldwide net? I have been trying frantically to keep up with the social networking that is sweeping the hooping world partly because of curiosity and I am eager to learn as much as I can from other hoopers to help me with my art form. There is nothing better than skimming through hoop blogs and hooping tutorials when I am stuck in a hooping rut. I prefer Facebook, Youtube, Tribe, Hooping.org, Hoop City, Vimeo, Myspace, Meetup.com in that order and was wondering what everyone else preferred. This question first came to my mind when I noticed hooping.org seemed to recently have much much less forum activity than Hoop City. One could spend all day on Hoop City reading and watching tutorials. Since keeping up with most sites is extremely time consuming (posting, pics, bio's, videos, updating profiles, asking questions, answering questions, ect.) for me and because I am running two profiles on a regular basis (BHoops~personal & Aurahoops~business) and trying to keep up with hoop friends I am a bit overwhelmed. It seems like a new network pops up daily. While I know this will not change for a long time, I am wondering what the majority of hoopers prefer to use. From the recent looks of things it seems to be hoop city. I always make Facebook and Tribe a priority, just my preference, but can't decide if I should invest more time in Hooping.org or Hoop City. Any suggestions?

Making a Resume

Soo, I've been pondering taking a position at a gym, but I am nervous about creating a resume. I taught a fitness class at my undergrad school, but that's my only institutional credit... I have, however, taught a lot of people individually and privately.

Has anyone else created a hoop resume? How do you list private/ home lessons without giving out personal info (client's address, phone #, etc)? What other experience (aside from teaching a class) should be listed??

Thanks for any advice!!

Must provide warmth, surface should be a little sticky, shape should be generally close-fitting.
Got ideas for torso, arms, and legs?

USPS damaging Hoops!

I have been havin lots of problems lately with USPS.

I've been mailing hoops for some time now, trying different things to package my hoops and it seems like no matter what i do, usps has a nice little way of doing things to my hoops!!!!

I've tried craft paper, packaging plastic, super thick garbage bags cut into strips and then taping the heck out of it, and now I use bubble wrap.

I spend A LOT of money on packaging supplies, tape to wrap over the bubblewrap and then I insure all my hoops.

Lately my problems have been, hoops arriving with little to no bubble wrap, leaving the hoop scuffed terribly!
bubble wrap will get holes in it and then there is holes in the tape
or a hoop arriving smooshed!!! I try to explain that the tubing is really flexible and can be re-shaped but when you talk to some people who just can't get it, then they are left with a hoop that is bent out of shape!

Why am I spending all this money on insurance ($1.75 - $2.25 each)
it seems that once I started insuring the hoops the more problems I'm having, ho hum

Any one else have this problem, have a solution for me?

I'm tired of sending replacement tape pieces and dealing with usps and the way they treat my products I spend so much time on.

I give USPS over a $1000 a month, you would think they would give ME more respect.
High Quality Handmade Hoops?

I have been lurking and reading over most the tribe for about a month or so off and on. I personally started hooping recently - I like as a warm up for other things.

When I realized I wanted to hoop - I just went straight to the hardware store to buy the materials to make hoops. I figured I didn't want to wait for shipping or spend a lot of money on something I wasn't sure I would be able to practice in the winter. Turns out, I love making hoops and it helps me smoke less (yay!)

I have recently been asked to make a hoop for someone. I would like to make her the best quality hoop I can. So what are the best materials as far as tapes to use so the hoop lasts a good long while?

So far I've used chrome tape from an ebay store - this worked well but my taping technique wasn't quite there yet so I've got ridges on that hoop. I've used vinyl (I love home depot purple!) but I did find hooping in my yard ate through the vinyl pretty fast.

My latest two hoops are made from 1 - athletic tape, spike tape and ribbon - haven't hooped outside with it yet and 2- hockey tape vinyl tape and a spiral of spike tape going the opposite direction over the vinyl tape.

All of my vinyl tapes are store bought electrical - does identi-tape offer a higher quality of this sort of tape? Or is electrical and vinyl tape the same beast?

Additionally, I making hoops for my dance studio for students to use to warm up with so I'd like to use the best products so we are not constantly replacing them or rather me retaping them.

Thanks in advanced for the advice!

Cheers!

Hi...new to hooping and not sure what steps to take

Hi, everyone.

I *just* got my first hoop this weekend. It's a 42" diameter 3/4" tubing hoop and it seems pretty heavy. I did some hooping last night and I can keep the hoop up for around 10 minutes at a time in both directions and I can do stalls reasonably well. I have a wicked bruise on my side, and I know that after trying to hoop on my hand I am going to have a nice bruise there tomorrow, too.

But now I am curious where to go with it. Should I just keep waist hooping until I can do it for 30 minutes without dropping the hoop or should I try doing other things? I can lasso (to a point...I almost knocked my husband out today with a flying hoop...haha :) but I am obviously not graceful or adept at it yet by any means.

I guess I am looking for advice on how to proceed. I am doing this for exercise, I need to lose about 40-50 lbs. and I HATE most other exercising. But I also love how gorgeous and graceful everyone looks in the videos, so I'd like to get to that point, too. Is there a "program" or specific hooping skills I need to learn first, then progress to the next thing, then to the next thing, and so on to build on that, etc.?

I ordered Hoopgirl's Hooping Fitness video today, will that have a step-by-step that I can follow?

Thanks much!

I live in Chattanooga TN and would love to expand the hoopnation to this area, but before i go out seeking somewhere to host a class i need to have some sort of credentials. Does this sort of thing exist?

material for making hula hoop

Hi all,

I've been told that 3/4" thick Polyethylene is a good material for making hula hoops, but I'm located in the Netherlands and I'm having a hard time finding this stuff here. I believe the primary use for these tubes is for water supply. Does anyone know anything about materials available in Europe that are suitable for making hoops?

Thanks!

So I loooooove one shoulder duckouts, and I can do continuous rotations now. I can also go from a horizontal plane to a vertical plane while doing continuous rotations. I'm laying here waaaay too sleepy and groggy, and an idea managed to float into my head. Is it possible to do barrel rolls while doing a one shoulder duckout? Maybe this is completely ridiculous and picturing the physics in my head just ain't happenin. But I'm absolutely going to try it now...has anyone tried to do this before. Could it actually work, or is this idea absurd?

HoopPath: NYC (Halloween weekend) "The Warrior Path"

Hello, NYC! I am very excited to unveil my new workshop series, The Warrior Path on the weekend of October 30th-Novemeber 1st, 2009.

The HoopPath has taught Warrior techniques since it’s inception, but this will be the first time that we have concentrated this much time and energy on this wonderfully beautiful and unique approach to hoop dance.

Before when we have traveled to NYC, we have had such little space that we have been unable to offer any discounts. This time around we are very excited to have a space large enough that we can offer essentially “specials.” Here are a list of our options for HP: NYC:

Days 1, 2, and 3

Days 1 and 2

Days 2 and 3 (For returning students).

Single Day tickets for all 3 days will go onsale on Wednesday, 10/28/09.

We are VERY excited to offer, for the first time in NYC, “Bring a Friend” pricing. This means that when you and a buddy buy your tickets (two tickets) together (in one transaction) your individual tickets are discounted. If you bring 2 friends (3 tickets total) you receive an even greater price break. **Please note that you will select the “Bring-A-Friend” option to purchase TWO passes for the selected days, or THREE passes if you select “Bring-2 Friends.” These tickets are non-refundable, so make sure that your friends are committed before purchasing.

If you can only make one of the three days, don’t worry, we will be selling single day tickets beginning on Wednesday, October 28th.

Buy your tickets here: https://www.etix.com/ticket/online/venueSearch.jsp?venue_id=4612&cobrand=hooppath

Individual = $170 (9 hrs)

Bring-A-Friend (2 tix) = $300

Bring-2 Friends (3 tix) = $420

Help!! I've got a student that just can't hoop!!!

Hey hoopers! It's been awhile since I've posted here. Anyways, I am teaching my first ever official hoop class. Tuesday will be the 3'rd class. Some students are picking up much faster than others, and this is fine. It's a small class, so I have time to work one on one. My problem is, I have one hooper who just can't seem get basic waist hooping down. We've worked on outside of the body moves and hand hooping, and she's great at that. Actually hooping.... well... she gets the hoop around a few times and it drops.

She's tall and a bit overweight. She keeps joking that her "boobs are in the way". I've tried giving her larger hoops to use, but she is still having a problem. She has a great attitude thus far, but one thing she doesn't have is her own hoop. I provide the hoops for the class, and offer the students a $5 discount on any hoop they buy from me. The first class, she wanted to "borrow" one of my hoops so she could practice. Without directly saying "no" I told her she can buy a hoop from me at a discount. She said she would, but has yet to do so.

So... my main question is, do you guys have any tips on teaching basic waist hooping to a plus sized student?????

Also... I want the class to move along. She's super positive and enthusiastic about hooping, I was thinking about letting her borrow a hoop, but I'm also there to make extra $$$ selling my hoops.

Just wondering if any new hoop teachers have been in this dilemma....

Thanks guys.

The "impending demise" of Tribe?

There is an article on Hooping.org today that begins with the sentence "With the impending demise of Tribe..." Does someone have information that we don't have about this or is this mere speculation? I am getting letters from all over and, frankly, I don't know. If it is speculation, it is irresponsible journalism to say the least. Stating such a thing as fact could actually undermine Tribe, a site I love very much and a site that is much larger than just one tribe. It is a very different thing to express concern that there "may be" an impending demise of tribe and so we are creating a back up plan than to express it as fact. And if it is a fact, I'd like to know where this information comes from. Does anyone have any information about this?

USPS Shipping - NEW *Handling* Charge

Hey guys,

I haven't been on tribe in ages b/c of all the problems it was having. I've missed you all!

I wanted to share a large annoyance I have encountered with USPS today. I shipped a hoop like usual with my regular office - never any issues after the original road bumps of getting them to get over their weirdness about shipping hoops in general.

Well, after a year of shipping with them - the supervisor came out today and said that this whole time they haven't been charging me an extra "handing" fee that they should have been charging. They want to charge an extra $9.22 each time b/c the hoops have to be handled by HAND during shipping and cannot be put in machines like other boxes etc.

I am angry. Never in the whole year shipping with them have I had to pay this charge. I charge $12 for shipping on hoops which I am selling for $20. Now they want to add another $9 and change and I will have to charge about $17 in shipping on a $20 hoop. To me this is ridiculous

Has anyone else encountered this recently? Sorry if there is another thread about this going. I haven't been on in ages and there are 710 threads I haven't read through yet.

i use both 36" diameter hoops and 42", but personally, i definitely prefer the smaller sized hoops.

NEED: Suggestions for Hoop Photo Portfolio

My great friend, who is a very talented photographer i have used before for photoshoots, is giving me a shoot as part of a barter:

I have decided to use the shoot to create a hooping portfoilio--a series of photos i can use not only for fun, but for promotion, and to present to clubowners, students, etc etc

My question is: do you have any specific suggestions of what looks i should include/what styles i should aim for?
I am already thinking: some artsy/circusy shots, some fire shots, LED shots, playful neon-ravery looks, athletic, out in nature, etc.

we are shooting over several days, so i have time to do many different looks, costumes, backgrounds, hoops, tricks, motion vs. still, etc etc

suggestions are super appreciated.

67.00 to ship my hoops!!!!!!!!!!! help. please

I am trying desperately to ship my hoops to a friend . they are a set of 31" twins 1/2 125 psi and a set of 34" 100 psi. This was my first time shipping hoops. I thought 20.00 max on shipping and maybe more to insure them.OMG, 67.00 is what they want at the post office. I am shipping from PA to FL. I said that can not be the price. I then went to UPS and they told me they have to box them . We all know that isn't gonna happen or the box is gonna be a large picture box. That is what it was. the price on that was 63.00+ the box and wrapping. Ok then I went to fed ex , the cheapesst so far at 30.00 not insured . My friend went on line and they said to set up a USPS account. I did that and put in the dimensions. I even made them larger.I then talked to 2 people at USPS and they said "as long as they are not larger than 70" in diameter I can send them no probelm " the parcel price was around 9.00 . That was wonderful . I printed up a label and I even insured them for a few more dollars. I talked to the post office. the post master called me from pittsburgh and said. I can not send them for less than 67.00. If I try to send them with the packing slip I printed for 12.00 , when it got to it's destination they may as for shipping from the reciever. Now , I do not know what to do. I know a lot of people ship many hoops for business, and maybe they get a bulk rate , however I also know some people send a few at a time. I am sure no one who hoops in our hoop community is sending hoops for 67.000 shipping. I know this cause no one would buy a hoop on line for over 100.00,even though they are worth it.
I want some feedback on what to do. these hoops are beautiful and custom made for her. I do not want to cut them and ship them . I feel this will ruin them. I may have to tell her I can not send them . I don't want to do that . please could someone respond........

Thank you , I am a little on edge . I think this full moon is releasing some kind of pent up energy or feelings or toxins or something..........

Ok I have a dilemma, there is a little local festival here based around the 60-70’s. They have dance competitions and stuff and one of them is for hula hooping. I am basically the only hooper in the area minus about 2 other people. Would it be wrong to enter the hula hoop competition? I think it’s going to be grandmas in poodle skirts and kids primarily. The boyfriend said that’d make me a hustler if I did. What do you guys think?

Putting the Dance in hoop dance

Hi everyone!

So, I finally got around to making a video of myself today so I could actually see what I looked like while hooping. Overall not bad, but I noticed my hooping is definitely lacking in dance. I've watched a few videos and stuff to get help, such as Caroleena's (thanks!), Hoopalicious, etc, but I never really danced before I picked up hooping. Have any of you found that taking any dance classes helped, or that a specific style of dance translated better to hooping than others? I'm becoming more conscious of how much dance my hooping actually has now that I've smoothed out my tricks (well, mostly), and I really don't want to look like I'm just stringing tricks together. Granted, when I'm hooping I'm doing whatever feels good to me at the moment, and I usually just get lost in my hoop, but when I'm around a lot of people I'd like to be able to put together something that's more visually pleasing to them as well. Any advice is welcome.

Thanks!

Ribbon Hoops

I've recently started making hoops and I got bored with the tape selection in my area and moved on to ribbon. I really enjoy using it because it comes in so many colors and patterns. I have been using double-sided tape and then covering it with vinyl tape. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make ribbon hoops better?

taking a hoop to a club?

so, i haven't been out to a club in a looooong time. 6 years probably and i've only been hooping for 3 or 4 months. well, some friends invited me to go see DJ Tiesto when he comes through next month. it's not my absolute favourite type of music, but it'd be nice to get out so i'm planning on going. i'm wondering though if i can/should bring my hoop along? i've never seen anyone else with a hoop ever in person, so i'm wondering how i would be received. plus, i'm wondering if there will even be room to use it in a crowded club? i don't know. like i said, i'm a newbie to hooping and it's been ages since i've even been out at all anyway. not sure what's appropriate or not. insight?

Two-Year Fitness Degree: Good Asset for Teaching HoopDance?

hey, hoop-friends!

just a quick question:
I work at a college, and am eligible for a certain number of credits free per year thru tuition reimbursement. it occured to me recently that, thru using them, i can earn an additional degree at NO COST besides text books and lab fees.

SO: I am considering doing a two-year "Fitness Specialist A.S." degree in the hopes of using it to teach hoopdance, and maybe eventually incorporate some yoga and other movement arts to create a curriculum centered around bliss, grace, joy, and personal growth. i know i can teach hoopdance without any degree, but this degree would give some "street-cred" needed to teach in schools, healthclubs, maybe even at the college itself (the program head likes me alot).

Questions:
-does having a degree/specialized training in fitness and wellness help you teach hoopdance?
-do you think i can market the whole "I-am-a-real-person, full-figured-girl, if-i-can-do-this-so-can-you" thing in my career? my biggest anxiety is that the world of fitness, which often places a high value on appearance and vanity (not always, tho), might bring out the worst in me in terms of insecurity, etc.
-by having my own degree, do you think i could then develop me own unique curriculm? doing teacher training thru other hoopers is awesome, but i am looking for something i can develop independent of that.
-any other things i should study on my own? (dance, meditation, business/marketing,etc)?

Thanks to ALL!

Hello!

I'm a UK hooper and I have just made my 1st ever video. It took a lot of strength to post it due to a HUGE lack of confidence, but the hooping community and all my friends have been SO supportive and encouraging and have made me feel SO much better about it that I have been encouraged to post it on here!

I am at the start of my journey, so any hints 'n' tips are really welcomed! I also hope that if there are any other under-confident hoopers reading this, that they might be encouraged to do the same..! I found it tough to post, but the support I have received has made me really glad I did! Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of those people!

I urge anyone lacking confidence to do this!! :)

I hope you enjoy it!

I've been working on making 35" hoops using 100 psi irrigation tubing. I'm really having problems making a perfectly round hoop. The material is sturdy enough for a really solid hoop....just can't quite get the shape right. Any ideas on working out the kinks???

Copyright infringement? Can anyone please give me some MUCH NEEDED advise?

So, I am really unsure as to how I should handle this. Last night I received an email from a woman named Kacey who goes by the name of pixiehoops. The email said that she has legal rights to the name of pixie hoops, which I have absolutely no problem with but... She wants me to do something about my youtube.com channel because I have the URL of youtube.com/pixiehoop and people confuse me with her brand I suppose...

The real issue that I'm having is that my hoop name is Rosebud and my youtube says "Rosebuds' pixie hoop dancing". I have had this channel since December 23, 2008, have uploaded several videos that I would not be able to re upload or save to another account because they were uploaded straight from my webcam AND I have people who actually watch those videos at that url. She has only had her youtube since March 05, 2009 and doesn't have any videos uploaded to her channel at all...

I really don't want to have to go to court over this, (as she kindly insinuated that is what will happen if I don't change my youtube), I don't have the money for that, I'm a full time college student struggling to live in the first place, and I don't want to loose any of my hooping footage, it's pretty important to me. Is there anyone who has had this happen to them as well? Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on how to deal with this? It's really upsetting to know that this hooper wants to basically take me out because of a name similarity...

Here's my site: www.youtube.com/pixiehoop

and here's her site: www.youtube.com/pixiehoops

Sigh... I could really use some help...
Thank you,
Rosebud

Ok so I love to do ridiculous make up when I have a show. Glitter, face painting, etc. But obviously I sweat a lot while I perform and it's a problem because my make up runs into my eyes badly. I usually use a MAC pigment stick base with mineral tint over it followed by various eyeliner colors. Does anyone know of a good sealant/fixative? I went to a MAC store today and got a sample of this translucent powder stuff that's supposed to set your makeup, but I haven't tried it yet. Any suggestions?

Criticism : /

So I went to a bar on Friday night with some of the guys I work with. It was really fun and I met a lot of people. It was an Irish bar, so almost all of the people there spoke English (I'm in Paris). I ended up meeting this American who had lived in France for the past few years and had been to Burning Man for about 4 years in a row before moving to Europe. He also did entertainment and festival stuff, so he knew hoopers and had seen a lot of them in his lifetime. We talked about it for a while, and he asked to see what I could do with the hoop that I had on me. I obliged and gave a very brief demonstration of my best tricks (shoulder duck-out, fast beam me ups, knee hooping with leg pull-out, etc.). I stopped and he was like, "yeah...but I noticed you were a little slow on the neck transition. Like when you brought it up from your knees up to your neck? It just lagged a little."
I don't really know how I feel about this. My first reaction was silent indignation and a little offense. I was really bothered that the first thing this guy has to say after I politely showed him what I could do was a criticism of my skill. It's not that I think, "oh I'm so good and he should have appreciated that" I feel like at no matter what skill level I would have been at, whether it Hoopalicious-powerful or beginner waist hooping, to start with a criticism is very low.
On the other hand, criticism helps you to grow and develop into a better whatever you're trying to become. But this guy wasn't a hooper, so it felt a little judgmental. He had just seen hoopers, but doesn't know what it feels like to be one.
I don't know...how would any of you reacted to this? I was just a little put-off and felt put down :(

Spreading the love of hooping in South Africa

After spending over two years in the UK. I have now returned to South Africa and ready to spread the hooping bug.
I'm armed with Christabel's Hooping dvd's, updating my style and tricks. (ouch the bruises, hehe)
Found a good supplier for tubing, (still flirting to get a reduced rate).
Struggling with the connecters, but found a smaller size tube that does the job well.
I'm also searching for different type of TAPE's. Not that easy accesible. But I'm phoning around and wil find something worthwhile.
At the moment all my hoops are black and/or red.(Not good, but its a start)

Now I've decided the best place to start would probably be at a music festival.
So I got myself space in the craft market at Splashy Fen Music Festival in April.

What I would like now is some advice from those whom have sold hoops and taught hooping.
Just little pieces of advice that wil help me be more confident and ready for this.

Also - what type of tubing would be perfect for children under 10? Looking at doing something on World Hoop Day.

Lotsa Hoop Hugs to all from Sunny South Africa.

Raleigh's WHD Pediatric AIDS project

We crafted 43 hoops this past week and today we gifted almost every single one to a child with AIDS. There were a few adults with AIDS there also as well as their caregivers and case managers. Most folks got a hoop though some caregivers did not. To their credit they made sure the kids and patients all had one first so there weren't many left over after that. I wish we'd had a few more for them, especially for four women who work in various areas of patient care, which is hard work. I'm going to try to make them each a hoop and get it to them.

We gifted them at a picnic for pediatric and adult AIDS patients through Duke Hospital's AIDS program. It was our World Hoop Day service even though the picnic was not until today. We began raising money on WHD and we've been crafting ever since.

The social worker for the Pediatric AIDS unit was so grateful. She was thrilled to see the kids hooping and playing and moving. It turns out a lot of these kids are very sedentary because their parents (or oftentimes grandmothers -- several of them had lost both parents to AIDS) are overly protective of them. They're afraid they'll get hurt or sick so they don't get to play sports or even play outside very much. Instead, they play a lot of video games and watch a lot of tv. So, while you wouldn't think it would be so, obesity is a problem in this population, especially as they get older. And, to be honest, it was the first time I really had to work at getting kids to play. I had to draw them out and it took much longer than I ever would have expected or than I've ever experienced before. That tells you right there how unfamiliar this territory was for them. We really expanded their boundaries today. And I'm grateful for the few kids and the social workers who started hooping and got the other kids interested in trying it too. Once we got them started, they didn't want to stop.

There were two 12 year old boys, both over-weight and quite shy, who never came and played with the group at all but they chose two large hoops and played with them constantly off to the side. They were hooping on their waists and arms, making up games, doing tosses. It was a blast to watch. And I wish you could have seen their faces when I told them that the hoops were theirs to keep! There were several young girls who had to be really, really encouraged to try to hoop but, by the end, were hooping up a storm. One of their grandmother's hugged me for drawing her granddaughter out and said she never plays like that normally. I wish you could have seen this little girl too. She was adorable with the biggest brown eyes you've ever seen. When I think of her, it's her eyes I picture and her big shy smile. There was one young boy who never put his hoop down after he picked it out. I didn't have the heart to tell him that it was one of my two twins. He was so happy with it ... and I can always make another one. (Like I'm looking forward to making another hoop!?!)

Four members of the Raleigh Drum Circle (and regular drummers at our weekly hoop jam) also came all the way to Durham and drummed for this event. The guests loved it and I'm so grateful to them for giving up a beautiful Sunday afternoon to make the day of a bunch of kids who have never gotten to have a drum circle experience. They shared drums and several kids drummed, some of them quite well. It was beautiful.

This was a belated World Hoop Day service project and I feel really good about it. (We raised the money on World Hoop Day so I think that still counts.) The social worker is talking about hosting a regular hoop jam for the kids to keep them at it. The place where we had the picnic would be perfect for that -- central, free, covered and with electricity. I offered to help them organize one or, even better, organize a larger community jam so the kids could have other kids and adults to hoop with instead of only getting to play with each other. We all need community. It really does take a village to raise a child.

My shoulders are still aching from all this hoop crafting. It was an enormous amount of work (I've done little else for a week!) but I didn't do it alone. I am grateful to all the individuals who donated money for materials or their time for crafting. This beautiful event was the result of a lot of caring people and I am more grateful than I can say for every single contribution and kindness. There are a lot of things about AIDS that we can heal -- lonliness, depression, lack of exercise, the stigma of "being sick" or "frail". Hooping can address all those things while also bringing joy in a way that is free and creates community. How powerful is that?

Today we made a difference in some people's lives. What a great day.

Maybe I'm just crazy, but I was thinking about hooping the other day (what else do I think about) and it occured to me that I might be a little crazy. I have named my hoops. Like actual human names. AND, not only that, but I have come to think of each hoop as an individual. Meaning they each have their own personality. Like my favorite pink hoop has a 'sassy' personality. I also have a hoop that is kind of 'classy & sophisticated'. So am I crazy or do you all have names and personalities attached to your hoops. If so, please do share!
BTW, I gladly own my craziness! =p

How could I have handled this better?

I was at my sister's graduation party today and I brought my hoops along to give people something to do since I knew there wouldn't be much in the way of activities. I realize many people in this area know little, if nothing about hooping, but I thought it might be fun if people wanted to give them a go.

I brought hoops pf many sizes and knew there would be some older children there (from my family) and everything was going really well with the hoops at first. When I brought them out, I told them they could play with them as long as they wanted as long as they stayed on the grass with them. The hoops also included one I made a few days ago that I was extremely proud of but my daughter also fell in love with it, so I brought it for her to use. Anyway...

So a bit later, I was sitting in a chair with my back to the hoops. Somewhere along the way some of my sister's friends showed up and one of them brought a 2 year old boy. He was drawn to the red hoop I'd just made and my daughter came over to tell me he'd gotten the hoop and scratched it all up, I looked behind me to find he was dragging my new hoop on the concrete.

I kindly asked them from my chair to keep the hoops on the grass as dragging them on the concrete would ruin the tape. I didn't go into detail about how long they take to make or how they are expensive (even though they aren't if you make them yourself but this one was certainly a labor of love). I wanted right then and there to go over and take the hoop, but I didn't want to look like a bitch at my sister's party. I never would have brought them out if I knew there would be smaller children there.

Long story short - the girl who brought the boy kept letting him take the hoop onto the concrete. I kept asking them to keep it on the grass. When I finally got up and walked over there to take it away, the boy started playing tug of war with me over the hoop. I asked him to keep it on the grass and when he wouldn't I tried to take it. Then, the girl walked over and I told her he needs to keep in on the grass (don't get me wrong, I realize a 2 yo isn't going to do that). I became oven more livid as some of the teens also started using the hoops on the concrete and then would just let them drop mid-round and scrape. I am like wtf is wrong with you people?!?!?! (thinking to myself). I know they all heard me tell them to keep the hoops on the grass. The 9 yo kids had no problem at all with that simple instruction!

She left shortly after that and I am sure she was pissed at me. She just does not understand that these hoops are not cheap little toy hoops. I was very sorry right away that I even brought them out. If the hoops had been older and a bit worn, fine. I hadn't even really had the chance to use the hoop myself.

Thing is, I was all excited to share the joy, but I am very disheartened when people can't follow simple instructions. I had no issue at all sharing, just not on the concrete - and there was more grass than concrete there!

How would you have handled a situation like this without coming across as being a bitch? I want to share the joy, but not if my hoops are going to end up battered and bruised.

Or am I just being too sensitive?

Hey Hoopers!

No, I don't think tribe is going to fall down a fiery pit of death and never resurface. No, I don't think hoopers are going to stop using this community.
That being said, I'm going to start archiving tribe conversations and posts that I personally think are significant and important, and I want to be able to find them easily on my computer to reference and stuff. I'll then probably save it on a flash drive because I don't want a million files taking up space on my computer.
I'm going to save the URL links of the conversations I want to save and put them in a post later for anyone else who wants to save/re-read them.
I'll also probably be asking around various tribes for conversations that have gotten lost in cyberspace and that I want to recover.
Happy Hooping (and archiving!)

I have looked for a post that can give me ideas to cleaning hair off my hoop. I have two cats and a dog so animal hair is everywhere. Anyone know a good way to clean hair off of hoops? No matter where they are stored, hair gets stuck to the tape and I have tried using other tape, even a damp cloth; both ways help get the hair off but not fully. I guess I'm looking for an easier way maybe?

Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks!

Do you know how and where I can get this DVD, I can pay with Paypal or IBAN/SWIFT

Or maybe someone has an old copy thy are willing to sell ?

Hello goddess hoopers, I have a question. I have been hooping about a year. I have found my flow, but still need more movements. The tricks aspect is not my strong suite, but mostly dancing. I only learn tricks if nesscessary for transitions, but thinking about doing some yoga. I'm not a yoga fanatic, but it seems like a good ideal for creativity. I just wondering adding yoga can it make you a better hooper. If you are a person who does yoga, how did it benefit you as a hooper.

Tribe overviews for the hooping.org forums?

like a month ago or so i had messaged Xta about my concern that if tribe dies for good so much valuable information and suggestions will be lost...

the hooping.org forums are the future of the hooping community, but it would be a shame to lose all these helpful hints from the years on tribe. so i had a loose idea, that she improved upon, tribe overviews!

so i started off by doing an overview for 'making/decorating a simple hoop' i used the collection threads in the beginning of the tribe here. but those aren't completely up to date, so i also added things from newer threads on the subject also. it's a lot of direct quotes from the threads, but some things that were said many times by many hoopers (like gaffer tape for grip) i just summarized in my own words

http://www.hooping.org/forums/mod/groups/topicposts.php?topic=9885&group_guid=386
^^^^ you can read what i posted yesterday in the 'advice for new hoopers' group on hooping.org. the format doesn't have to be exactly the same of course, the important thing is that it's understandable. it took a while, but i had fun reading thru things on here.

"What do you think about you, me, and anyone else interested taking on a task of writing up overviews? So, whoever takes 'knee hooping' opens up a new document, whittles down the info from all the good, full-of-content posts on Tribe.net (with author credit), formats it nicely and then puts it into Hooping.org?" <--- from Xta to me in a private message

xta/christa seems really busy from our communications about this, does anyone else want to help out preseverving some the hoop knowledge on tribe for posterity? there's the list of topic collections in the intro to the tribe, but we can get even more specific. anyone have any ideas? any volunteers?

jr. high hoop group needs video suggestions

Hey.

I'm a jr. high science teacher on a rez in South Dakota. I'm super excited that my proposal for a hoop group got accepted as a one-night-a-week after school activity. I'm not sure how many kids to expect, but I do know that there is some interest, so probably anywhere between 5 and 15 kids. Both boys and girls will be invited. I want to talk about hooping and do a few demos the first night so that they can decide if it's something they want to do. I also want to have videos or video clips to show them of different styles and abilities. So, I need help with finding a few inspirational videos to show them. I want to show all types, especially any of kids, if you've seen any. My group will be 11-13 year-olds.

After the talking and videos, I'll let them play around with the hoops. Hopefully they'll come back the next week!

I have some bigger ideas that I'm thinking about. 1) come up with a routine for one of the jr. high basketball games. 2) students in the group can earn their own hoop by attendance and passing grades (sometimes a struggle here) 3) having a native hoop dancer come and talk to the group and do a hoop dance with a Q and A session at the end. (I know a guy who knows a girl hoop dancer that would do it for us. Pretty sweet.)

Anyway. Any video suggestions or other types of suggestions?
Thanks!
jen

Help! Does Anyone know of ANY hoopers in Paris?

Hello!
I'm moving to Paris for my year abroad to study art and fashion. Obviously, I'm bringing my hoops with me and plan to have lots of fun while I'm there. I've tried to google Parisian hoopers, but I haven't really found anything. Does anyone know if there are hoopers in Paris? I would greatly appreciate any info you have, as I would loooove to connect with other cultures through hooping.
Also, I heard you have to get a permit to street perform in Paris. Does anyone know about this? I couldn't really find any info online...
Thanks so much!

Hi!

I am organizing a WHD event on Long Island. The event will be held on WHD, 9-9-09, beginning at 4pm. The location is the Heritage Park, also known as the "wedge park", located in Mount Sinai, NY on Long Island. This park is located at the intersection of CR 83 and Rte 25A.

For directions, info, or just to say "Hi", please message me. This event is FREE, but I am looking for volunteers to share hoops (tho I will have plenty), bring CDs or water, or just to help out beginners.

In the quest to acquire new skills, we can all benefit from words of encouragement. I collect quotes. I think they are distilled wisdom. Tonight I went through my quotes and pulled out these words of encouragement to share with you. I'd love to hear yours as well. Here goes...

"Our ability to get better at things is directly proportional to the amount of embarrassment we are willing to tolerate."

"Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly at first." - Robert Downey Jr.

"If you can’t take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought to go back home and crawl under your bed. It’s not safe out here. It’s wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross. But it’s not for the timid." - Q (from Deep Space Nine)

"People of accomplishment rarely sit back and let things happen to them. They go out and happen to things." - Leonardo da Vinci

"Hold up your head! You were not made for failure, you were made for victory. Go forward with a joyful confidence in that result sooner or later, and the sooner or later will depend mainly on yourself."

"He is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has." - Epictetus

"enjoy being"

"Success means having the courage, the determination, and the will to become the person you believe you were meant to be." - George Sheehan

"You can gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do." - Eleanor Roosevelt

"It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare, it is because we do not dare that they are difficult." - Seneca

My first good switch that I got with my kit from prodmod broke a while ago. The switches from Radioshack are just not very durable...I've broken two of them with little effort. Does anyone know of a good place to order quality slide switches from? It would be so helpful to have a good switch! I'm gentle I swear, they just like to break on me.

Hoopers is Germany?

Hey there,

I feel a bit lonely here in Germany. I'd absolutely love to have someone to hoop with, but I don't know a single person in my area, and only one other person in other parts of Germany.

My trouble is three things mainly:

1.) Where would I find German hoopers if not here? Google has not given me any German hooping communities or boards or anything, so I'm pretty sure there's no real communtiy here. I'd be willing to try making an online community myself, but who with?

2.) Hoops are hard to come by. Getting them shipped from elsewhere is expensive as hell, and while I have actually found 1" tube to use for making hoops, there's nowhere I know that I could get connectors from, and I've looked around a lot. I've got my current hoop only because I brought it with me from my student exchange in Australia, and the glitter tape is cracking already. How can I promote hooping here if I can't help people to get decent hoops?

3.) How do I get people into it? I might just start out telling online friends and friends I know closely, but how else can I promote hooping?

I'm seriously thinking of starting my own blog and youtube account up again and maybe making a video or two, just so people could see that hooping exists here in Germany too. I'm pretty out of ideas otherwise, though. It's not like I'm really good either - I can do waist, neck and chest with a bit of shoulder, shrug the hoop up, jump in, step through, do it on my elbow and on my foot lying on my back, but I'm nowhere near professional. I'm worried I'm not good enough to inspire people to pick up the hoop, even though I've been told otherwise wi non-hoopers - I feel like they can't judge, although it's being silly of course.

Are there any German hoopers here at all? Any ideas what I could do? Any help would be appreciated!

Where can I find hoop tube & connectors online??

I've been on the hunt for 1/2" 160psi for about a month now, been on several wild goose chases and I'm here... With no tubing! >.<
Is there anyone who uses an online supplier? Would you be willing to share?
OR do you live in the North Bay and know where to purchase?

I would love to be able to hoop with a thinner hoop... someday...

Thanks!

Symbiosis Gathering? Anyone?

any hoopers going to symbiosis gathering? sept 17th--21st? http://symbiosisgathering.com/2009/ my boyfriend justin and i are coming (and volunteering) and we're super excited! when we had bought the plane tickets originally, we had thought that maybe we'd be able to hook up with one of justin's friends, or a friend of a friend, but they'll be out of town.

my boyfriend and i are flying into san fransisco from rochester ny. we have been trying to get a ride from the airport on the symbiosis rideshare boards, but we haven't had success yet. anyone going to this who has room for two of us? we're packing pretty minimally, and since my led hoop is collapsible, i've decided to bring regular collapsibles instead of checking a few favorites (as i had originally planned, it'll just be easier this way)

we'll each have one small/medium suitcase, and we'll be able to fit what we're bringing in that. bare minimum. no sleeping bags. thin blaknkets, sleeping in warm clothes. tent is really small folded up. hoops will be in with my clothes. so basically, if you have seating room in your car from san fransisco, but your worried about adding two more people's gear, don't stress! we're prepared to hug our packs on our laps the whole few hours there.

our other option would be renting a car, and hopefully grabbing two people from the rideshare list who want to throw down on that... but money's tight, and between the rental and the gas i have a feeling that is going to be pricey. the car rental makes me leary because whenever i have to put something big on my card that's intended to be split with other people later, something usually happens and in the end, it's more expensive that it was supposed to be

ideally, we'd like to get a ride from a local. all we need is butt space! gas money for sure! a convenience fee? whatever you want, we'll work it out! we're very nice and good company in the car. if you can help us out, message me on here, and we can talk more in detail. we'd really appreciate it! i'm very excited for the trip. if you have any doubts about picking up two randoms at the airport, please feel free to contact me and talk to me more. get a feel for what we're all about!

thanks folks! i got my fingers crossed still! and justin tells me that craigslist might blow up after burning man. so that's a possibility, but it makes me nervous to not have these things arranged very far in advance.... we'll see....
hope to hear from someone! thanks again

Advice/Help with Hoop Making

ok so i have made hoops in the past using 3/4" 100 psi tubing and everything went perfectly smooth. the two ends fit nicey nice and flush. and now i am trying to make some hoops using 3/4" 160 psi and when i go to join the two ends they do not sit flush and they come apart a bit leaving that annonying little v shaped gap. i figure its just because the 160 tubing is not as flexy as the 100 so i have some gorilla glue duct tape which i could probably just tape over the gap and once i put the deco tape on it might hardly be noticeable. BUT....im a perfectionist and i just wanted to see if anyone else struggles with this. I tried to cut a snippet of tubing and glue in place of the gap then tape but it still shows that indent under the tape. I also thought i might get that super bondy craft glue and shove the connector in there with some glue and hope that will keep the two ends together seamlessly. (i am using a 3/4" connector too by the way, it seems if it was just a tad thicker it would hold it together better)

Floppy Hoops?

I went out and bought a roll of 160psi 3/4" irrigation tubing from the local Home Depot, and proceeded to make myself a hoop following Jason Strauss' tutorial.

However!
My hoop is super floppy. I don't know if this is because I live in Canada which I hear is a void when it comes to getting the correct materials for a hoop, or is it supposed to be floppy like that? Help please! I'm a total newbie here so I'm really not sure what I'm doing wrong.

*Big* meditation hoop?

I'm interested in making a really big hoop, a la those at Yeongju (Gyeongju), South Korea on the mountain in "Clare and Lizzi's big hoop adventure" as seen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYbnpLCa30U

The hoops look to be 7+ feet tall but they're also of greater girth. I strolled around Home Depot but they didn't even have 160 psi to look at this time of year. There didn't seem to be anything else bendy to work with other than PEX, and it's not thick enough for this project.

Any guesses what those hoops in SK are made of, and what might be holding them together? I just thought one might be nice for a meditative hoop (in the driveway). I know the girls were having fun, and getting bruised up in the process, but look at the woman in the background... she had it. I have plenty of natural padding and common sense to take care of me, and I think I can handle this... now if I can just make the hoop. :-]

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

I just started facilitating a hoopjam where I live and it's at a pretty busy boardwalk. So far it's been a huge success, I just have to ask for some advice because I've never been in a situation where I'm hooping with many other people. I bring a ton of extra hoops in all sizes for everyone who happens to pass by to use. I encourage people to try one out. I do have a couple hoops that are just mine, though-one regular hoop and my led hoop-that I'm wondering if I'm being creepy for not letting people use them. So far with my regular hoop it hasn't really been an issue-I just don't put it down, but I just built a new led hoop and the next jam will be the first time I'll be bringing it so I know it will attract a lot of attention. I'm just having a hard time with the thought of a bunch people slamming my brand new led hoop around. Should I follow the advice I give my kids and leave home what I don't want to share, or is there a decent way of saying "MINE!"

How thick is the tube wall ? (looking for tube in Germany)

How thick is the wall of the tube ?

I'm looking for tube in Germany, and it's not easy to find. Ebay is the best option here, but most sellers state the thickness of the tube in mm.
PSI is not used in Germany, they use "bar" and it is quite confusing, and I cannot find 11 bar (equiv of 160 psi) anywhere :(
So, if you guys could tell me how thick is the wall of the 3/4" 160 psi tube, it would help me a lot !

Hello everyone !
I write a blog called Venusian*Glow which is a mix of topics such as green living, toxic-free beauty, raw food, bra fitting, and much more.
http://eternalvoyageur.xanga.com

I have recently discovered hooping, and I'd love to introduce my readers to it !
I am looking for a hooper (whether pro or a beginner) who would be interested in sharing a story about hooping ! No previous experience required ;-)

I am looking for a story that would make the reader go: "I think I need to try that, it sounds amazing !" Maybe a story of how hooping changed something in you or your life, how it taught you to dance, or be more confident... Or perhaps a story of how you taught hooping to your little sister or your grandma, or that stranger in the park !
You could also to it in video format, or add some photos... whatever feels right to you !

If you are interested please mail me at the_eternal_voyageur(at)rediffmail(dot)com

Decorating in plaid?

Alright, so a friend in San Jose helped me to finally make my first hoop. (Thanks, Renee!) Right now, I'm just at the absolute beginner, going-in-either-direction-around-my-waist stage. I hope to get around to watching some basic tutorial videos.

My question though is, has anyone tried decorating a hoop as a tartan or plaid? At the moment, the hoop I just made has a little bit of black friction and electrical tape on it, but I have a creative urge to do a real wrapping job with some gaffer tape in several different colors, maybe even criss-crossing and weaving the tape around to resemble some classic plaid patterns I like, such as Dress Campbell or Black Watch. (Yeah, I have some Irish and Scottish roots.) So, has anyone tried anything like that? Does that sound feasible? I have a lot of patience. :)

Mailing a blinky hoop.

Help!
At a recent event, a friend gifted me a store-bought blinky hoop. Yeah, I know, it's store bought. But it was a gift to me. And here's the thing: a little girl there saw it and fell in love...and her grandma gave me permission to mail it to her, but this is the kind of hoop that lights up for a few seconds when you BOUNCE it (aka there’s no on or off switch like on a regular psi-hoop).

So here’s my question....how do I wrap it so it won’t freak out the mail carrier/s when they bump it? The lights show through the bubble wrap of course, and I’ve been told that brown craft paper is no longer acceptable for wrapping oddly-shaped things in the mail. Should I just put signs on it that say “blinky hoop inside...don’t be startled”?

Eh.
Yeah, I dunno.
Ideas anyone??

I've discovered a neat technique that seems to make a more perfectly circular hoop.

It started when making a collapsible hoop (infinity style with two connectors.) I made a standard hoop with one connection (Point A) then cut the hoop on the opposite side (Point B) to bisect the circle. But instead of connecting the A points together and the B points together, I flipped one half of the hoop and connected A to B and B to A. This seems to even out any oblong shape a hoop might tend to have. It still may not be a "perfect" circle, but it definitely looks like one!

I'm a baby hooper and have been googling hooping, hoop dance, etc and have a few questions:

Are there different styles of hooping?? I see Hoopgirl, hoopnotica, etc and didn't know if it's all the same or what. Can someone enlighten me or point me to a website that can?

Any good books on hooping??
Hooping podcasts (couldn't find any)??

Have you found that certain exercises help you with hooping? Like yoga, another dance style, etc?

Ok, I think that's all for now. Thanks so much for the help!

Advice on Hoop Dance Parties.

Ok- I am on a mission to get people in my area hooked on hooping. I have been hooping for 5 months and still have yet to meet another hooper in my area. I think they just don't exist around here. So like I said, I've made it my mission to change that. One of the ways I thought of doing that is to do Hoop Parties, for bachelorette parties for kids b-day parties etc... I've seen that many of the hoop companies do this sort of thing. So I was hoping for some advice on how to host one of these. ie: What goes on at one of these, do you decorate hoops or is that too expensive? Do you play games with the kids? If so what kind of games? Do you put on a performance/demo? Which moves/tricks do you teach? How long does a party last? And finally, I didn't plan on charging but I haven't ruled that out yet. My main goal is to get people hooping but I certainly wouldn't mind making money. =) I just don't want to LOSE money in the process by giving away hoops and hoop making supplies. So how much do you charge? Thanks in advance for any and all input! It is much appreciated!

Making a Figure Eight Style Collapsible Hoop

I recently made a couple of these, and I'm not happy with how they turned out. I simply cut the tubing in half and used two couplings to connect. They fold down to the figure eight really easily, but they don't stay together as the double circle without holding them together. Also, they keep pulling away at the connections. I thought about cutting the couplings down shorter to see if that would help, or trying lighter tubing (I'm currently use 3/4" 160 psi). Does anyone have any advice on making these better?

can you recycle damaged hoops?

I am always a fan of retaping old hoops to gift to new hoopers, but over the past 3 years I have also had some hoops meet rather unfortunate ends... leaving me with a hoop graveyard of sorts in my storage unit. Kinked tubing, etc, is the main issue. Can I peel off the tape and recycle the tubing? Anyone done this before? I really don't want to just toss them in the trash if I can avoid it. Would I also need to remove the connectors or cut them down into smaller pieces?

Any suggestions would be very appreciated. :)

The New Hooping.org Community Forums

Hello Hoopers,

I'm Philo, the guy who runs Hooping.org, just in case some of you may not know me. Hello!

When Hooping.org launched in 2003 we originally had community forums. They were pretty active. Spiral, Baxter, Christabel, Anah, we were all in there chatting up a storm, making plans for Burning man, etc... but Hooping.org was on a fly by night server back in the day and about a year later someone hacked our forums and deleted everything. We decided that since Ariel was moderating this Tribe at the time, in addition to working on Hooping.org, that we'd just make this tribe Hooping.org's official community space - rather than rebuild the forums. And I have to say it's really been great!

I don't know that any of us could have foreseen that a few years down the road though we'd be faced with the possibility of losing all that we'd build here. Earlier this year when the major outages began, people started writing to me asking for the forums to return to Hooping.org - and I started working on making that happen. I may not participate here much, even though I'm around a lot, and I have to say that the realiziation that we as a community really don't own this, has grown increasingly disturbing - particularly when I can't login to post our location for Bay Area Hoopers and nobody on Tribe knows where we are that weekend.

The work on the Hooping.org forums began in January. It's been a slow process, but I wanted it to be the right one. I wanted to create something good enough to rival this Tribe and to give us as much of the same experience as possible, if not more. I wanted something that could last and would be solidly built. I also wanted to create a new community space that was entirely on our server, community owned, by and for hoopers, rather than utilizing another third-party service like Facebook or Ning to ensure we wouldn't end up in a similar situation again further down the road.

Last week the forums reached that magic place where they were ready for hoopers to start testing them out. Earlier this week I began putting the calls out for people to come in and start testing and it's been great - we've discovered problems - which is the whole point of testing! And better yet we've been able to fix them. Finding and fixing problems during testing week is what it's all about. And now, consequently, it's looking like the forums are running smoothly - so they're reading for the next level of testing. This is where you all come in.

Although the forums are scheduled to officially launch on Monday, I'm inviting everyone who has been a part of our hooping tribe here to get in early. It's our community and I value your opinion in making it something that works for as many of us as possible, that is meeting our needs. For five years this Tribe has been our community nexus point and nobody knows more about hooping and community than you guys. I want you to have first crack at user names too and to help get things set up for the newbie hoopers that are surely on their way. And the best way to know that things are working is to fully utilize them. Create profiles and upload a profile photo, post a video, add something to the community calendar, comment on things, etc. The more we use the new forums, the more likely we can find those trouble spots and correct things, so we're ready for when the real party starts on Monday.

The one thing that is currently being worked on is that blog postings aren't connecting with profile pages and I'm working on that.

If you'd like to help just send me an email at philo@hooping.org telling me that you're from our Tribe and I'll happily send you the early access info. If you have a spam filter please make sure that you can receive email from Hooping.org too so you can not only get the info from me, but so your registration confirmation email doesn't end up in your spam filter as well.

I'm excited about this and really excited to be able to share it with my fellow hoopers!

Spincerely Yours,

- Philo

What to do with old hoops

I have an old hoop - its actually a pair of smaller twins. Not only is the gaffers tape is coming off but the glitter tape has separated and is chipping off revealing a gluey glitter mess. I guess I could hit it with sandpaper for a hour but it seems like a lot of work. Any ideas?

Thanks,
